Is reality television all that meets the eye?

You could say reality television is a reflection of all things bad in society, ranging from Dance Moms, a programme which highlights the bad in parenting, to TOWIE, a programme following the lives of a group of people, living in Essex. But why is it that these drama filled, exaggerated television programmes get us hooked?

Why is reality television irrevocably addictive?

Drama. Everybody loves drama. From the raging “bitch fights” between non fictional characters to lads trying to prove their alpha male status in Brentwood, it provides entertainment but also offers an accurate image of what happens in society, especially in the younger generation. Furthermore, as the cast members aren’t fictional, it exposes human nature at its extremity and restores happiness within our own lives as we see that our lives aren’t as complicated as the ones being depicted.

Reality television offers a form of catharsis as we are able to divulge into other people’s lives and maybe purge various emotions that we sometimes keep within ourselves. However, reality television isn’t just for our benefit, it benefits the people within the programme – predominantly the cast members. For example, Joey Essex exploded onto our screens on TOWIE with the famous “hairdryer” scene. He lived up to the archetype of an unintelligent, Essex boy (which has also been portrayed on other various reality television and documentaries such as Educating Essex) but now he has over £10million in the bank and a humongous fan base.

However, I also raise the question, is reality television having a negative effect?

Reality television makes people think that the “rich” lifestyle is easily attainable but what the programme doesn’t show is how hard the cast members have to work to get by and fund these extravagant lifestyles, seen as though, on some programmes, you get paid just £50 to appear. To students like myself, that may seem a lot for appearing in a forty-five minute programme, but to someone who owns a house and wants to live a comfortable life, is it?

People don’t seem to understand that the programme you star in can get dropped by the network airing it and if the programme is the only source income for them, they will be classed as unemployed.

Programmes like The Hills and Toddlers and Tiaras teach young girls (and sometimes boys) that physical beauty is what you need to be successful, when in fact education should be your primary focus, making sure you have Huddersfield New College

a backup plan for your future. Reality television blurs the minds of cast members making it unsure to them, and to us, whether they are actors or actual people.

Moving onto entertainment programmes such as The X Factor, the judges, along with the public, would rather mock bad contestants than give constructive criticism on how to improve. However, it could be said that these programmes do “praise the good contestants” as stated by Simon Cowell.

There is clearly two sides to this argument but, overall, reality television offers beneficial information, for instance The Biggest Loser educates us how to lose weight effectively, but also healthily. Yes, reality television maybe “dumbing down” popular culture but it continues to win the highest amount of ratings time and time again and no one can deny that, can they?

total of three songs each and they were followed by four Year 13 bands that played a total of five songs each. Every single band showcased their versatility as musicians and wowed the audience with their talent. A variety of amazing soloists also performed in the show, with first years like Reuben Swallow performing ‘Parisienne Walkways’ by Gary Moore and Ella Caton performing ‘Cry me a River’ by Dinah Washington. Also Lydia Bistucz one of the very talented second years performed ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay.

HNC music students rock Huddstoc

Well, it’s an end of year gig that showcases the talents of all BTEC Music Performance students in college. It’s an amazing opportunity to see all of the hard work that has gone on throughout the year in music performance!

The gig itself was put on by second year music students on this courseas a part of their final assessments, so yes that does mean that everything from the ticket printing, to the vocal effects on the night, was down to them and their tremendous hard work. Each second year student had their own role in the production of this show and every single one of them will tell you how difficult it was to organise such a sizeable event. Abi Lloyd-one of the two backstage managers on the night- said ‘I was actually quite surprised how well Huddstock went to be honest. Organising the event proved to be such a challenge and

I think this is mainly because you have to keep the team motivated and enthusiastic for such a long period of time. This often proved to be a struggle but I’m so glad that it sorted itself. Everything was alright on the night and I’m super proud.’

Jo Love, one of our two dedicated teachers also commented on the night, saying that ‘The show was an even greater success than last year, and the second year students excelled themselves with live sound, projections and lighting, creating a fantastic event and performing with real style and energy. The students had many meetings and discussions to get to this point, but their ideas and vision for what they wanted to achieve held strong and ultimately led to a brilliant result.’

The night itself consisted of both first year and second year bands performing their best songs to an audience filled with their nearest and dearest. There was a vast range of music genres being represented on the night, from 50’s rock ‘n’ roll to modern pop with a punk twist.

Huddstock had it all, and the musicians certainly gave it their all.

For many of the second year bands, this was their final performances together, which certainly brought a tear to the eye of both students backstage and many audience members. But they definitely all enjoyed the show and it gave us first years just a glimpse of what we would be getting up to in the following year if we decided to take on music once again. I just want to say first-hand how amazing the night was and would like to say a massive thank you on behalf of all first year students to all the second years who were involved, our teachers Jo Love and Paul Hewitt who we couldn’t function without and finally I’d like to say a massive thanks to all of you audience members that came and supported each and every one of us. It wouldn’t have been such a success without all of you.
