END OF YEAR TESTS Homework

Your child has their assessments in English and Maths during the week of 29th June. This is their last chance to show what they have achieved this year.

Make sure they know their targets and work towards meeting them.

Please avoid fasting during this week.

You should know all the tables to 12x12 and the related division facts. Use magic facts to work out new ones. e.g. 6x4 = 24, so 0.6x4= 2.4, 60x4 = 240 ‌

Year 5 children are given learning log homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go. It must be completed to an acceptable standard.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

Mr Smith runs a drop in homework club on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

Curriculum Overview Year 5 Miss Payne, Mrs Spokes and Miss Briggs

Summer Term 2

Creative Curriculum: English: We are working hard on Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ this half term and are using all of our drama skills to help us understand the motivations and actions of the different characters in the play. By looking closely at the language in the play we are learning to use vocabulary for effect, and are exploring poetic devices including iambic pentameter. At the end of the unit we will write and perform short play scripts based on the events in the text.

Whilst enjoying the wonderful story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we will delve into the world of Shakespeare and the time that he wrote his plays. We will apply our inference skills to analyse photographs of his era and collate all our learning to produce non chronological reports.

Challenge: What were the different types of plays I wrote? Can you name them?

Maths: We will continue to develop our mathematical skills including calculating fractions and finding percentages. We will use a range of strategies and organizing information onto a table to solve problems.

Science: We are fine tuning our observation and recording skills this half term and consolidating our knowledge ready for year 6. Over the course of the year we have acquired lots of scientific knowledge which we can explain with pictures, diagrams and other evidence to make sense of the world around us.

Art/ Design and Technology: Using our photographic evidence from the park, we have made detailed sketches of plants using a selection of material. We will also use of DT skills to design and create Shakespearian puppets.

Computing: Visits: We are lucky enough that our school is located next to the amazing Victoria Park which has a wide range of tree, plants and wildlife for us to observe and learn from. We have developed our knowledge of the different plants using classification diagrams and other research.

We will continue to develop our coding skills by using online resources including Espresso. Don’t forget that you can practice your coding skills by going to https://scratch.mit.edu/ and choosing create.
