Homework This will consist of: READING –  A range of graded reading books will be sent home every Tuesday with a reading record book. Please read these books regularly with your child and write a comment in the reading record book.

Discussion about the book is as important as the reading of the text.  Over the course of the week they will also take part in guided reading sessions in order to further develop their comprehension skills. It is important that they have the opportunity to read out loud and to discuss their book as it aids their understanding of the text. They should bring their book to school every

day.

SPELLING – spellings will be provided by the letters and sounds teacher each Monday of the week. Spelling tests will be carried out weekly on Friday in letters and sounds groups and the children will be reminded of this as each test approaches.

OTHER – in addition to the reading and spelling homework your child will be given sheets to develop either: English or Mathematics usually every Friday.

The content will vary according to the current class focus and your child’s needs. There will be clear instructions on the sheet.

Your support at home will be much appreciated and beneficial to your child’s achievements. Please ensure that your child’s homework is returned by the following Wednesday. A record of this will be kept of this in class in your child’s homework folder.

Parents Evenings: A meeting will be scheduled in the Autumn Term to discuss how your child has settled into their new class.

Welcome to Year 2 We would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that all the teaching and

HISTORY and GEOGRAPHY

support staff working within Key Stage One aim to ensure the highest standard of teaching and support, encouraging all children to achieve their full learning potential. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum in Year 2 in the core areas and all foundation subjects too. The skills your child learns will be developed further as your child progresses through school.

If there are any concerns regarding your child’s attitude, learning or behaviour we will contact you. We ask that you contact us if you have any queries or concerns on your part. I am available any night after school, I look forward to working in partnership with parents to ensure that the children of Year 2 are happy, settled and achieving their best standard of work.

The following subjects are the core curriculum areas and are national priorities as identified by the Government.

During the Summer Term we are taking a topic based approach to History and Geography. Throughout the topics the key skills from the National Curriculum will be covered. The topics for this year are as follows: 

My local environment The topics will also be covered throughout other curriculum areas, including Mathematics, English, Science, art and D.T.

Music Your child will be learning to play the Ocarina; it needs to be in school every Thursday.

English and Mathematics During the year your child will be covering numerous topics in English and Mathematics, some of which are:English – reading and writing a range of Fiction and Non-Fiction texts, including traditional tales, poetry and plays, comprehension tasks, grammar, punctuation, spellings and handwriting.

Mathematics – Numbers and the Number System, Calculations, Solving problems, Measures, Shape and Space and Data Handling.

Science This year in Science, the children in Year Two will participate in a variety of Science work including investigations, practical tasks, observations and recording at the appropriate level.      

Ourselves Electricity Forces and Movement Grouping and Changing Materials Living Things Plants

The children will be using secondary sources (video/DVD programmes, measuring equipment, digital cameras etc) and carrying out investigations, practical tasks and observations to aid their learning.

R.E. During the Summer Term we are studying aspects of Islam and Christianity – Rituals, routines, celebrations and Pentecost.

P.E. Please ensure that your child’s P.E. kit is in school as required. Please ensure that earrings are either taken out or plasters/surgical tape are provided.

P.E will be on a Wednesday afternoon. All children are expected to have full P.E kit.

Pumps are essential footwear and it is important that they are regularly checked for fitting.

Please help us to ensure that your child receives their full entitlement to the PE curriculum by ensuring correct kit is always in school.

There are also opportunities for all children to participate in a variety of after school activities.
