Promoting British Values at St Anne’s RC Primary School The DfE have recently reinforced the need "to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs". The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year (2014). St Anne’s RC Primary School is committed to actively promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; the pupils are encouraged to develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain. At St Anne’s RCP these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways: Democracy Democratic processes are embedded in the way we work at St Anne’s in the following ways. Each class elects two school councillors who represent pupils on the School Council. Pupils’ views are sought in many ways such as surveys; interviews; assemblies and pupil workshops on topics such as the school behaviour policy, school charter. Pupils in Years 4-6 can apply for positions as School Chaplains; our faith ambassadors. They support children and classes in their faith journeys whilst at St Anne’s; often taking part in Masses and delivering assemblies. Each KS2 class has Class Ambassadors; these positions are appointed by class teachers who select two children to represent their class and lead by example. Science Ambassadors are pupils who support teachers in Science Lesson. Sports Leaders, pupils in Year 2 and 6 can apply for positions as sports leaders; helping to organise and run activities during play and lunchtimes. Peer Mediation; this is a new position pupils in KS2 will be able to apply for in September following training by the Healthy Schools Team. School Librarians, pupils in Year 5 can apply for positions as school librarians. Year 6 prefects can apply for a range of responsibilities from office work to supporting younger children in the lower classes. Individual Liberty St Anne’s pastoral policies and schemes such as the, School Offer, Behaviour Policy, Anti-Bullying Policy, Equality Policy and E-Safety Policy, Caritas in Action scheme etc. ensure that all children can learn in a safe environment. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and to know how to keep themselves safe. We work with agencies such as Childline, Greater Manchester Police, the Prison Service, Fire Service and Health professionals. As an accredited 'Healthy School,' we are committed to ensuring that our children know how to keep themselves healthy and fit in order to fully enjoy their lives now and in adulthood. We have themed weeks and workshops covering Healthy School topics; walk to school week, drugs week, e safety and anti-bullying weeks etc.
