Blackpool Aspire Academy Year 9 Making Informed Choices Now that you are approaching option time, it is very important to make careful choices regarding the subjects you wish to study for GCSE and Btec. At Blackpool Aspire Academy there are a number of subjects which are compulsory based on government requirements thus ensuring that all students continue to study a broad and balanced curriculum, which provides excellent preparation for the future.

We also recognise that by now you may have certain subject strengths and interests. If you have clear ideas on a career, this may influence your choice of GCSEs or Btecs. It is also worth remembering that if you wish to study a subject at A level, for most subjects, it is better to have studied them at GCSE or Btec first.

You will receive plenty of personalised advice and guidance as you make your option choices and I hope that you find this booklet and the whole process both useful and supportive.

Advice and guidance from Mrs Hanlon Catlow –Deputy Principal This booklet provides information about all the courses available for Key Stage 4 students at Blackpool Aspire Academy for September 2015. We have spent much time discussing and planning our curriculum offer because we recognise the importance of continuing educational opportunity and achievement. All students currently in Years 8 and 9 are required to stay in education or training until they are 18.

All students will study GCSEs in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science.

THE ENGLISH BACCALAUREATE The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) recognises where students have secured good grades in English, Mathematics, two Sciences, a Modern Foreign Language and either Geography or History. This is a nationally recognised and sought after performance framework and we encourage and support students in working to achieve it. Therefore, we encourage students to consider taking a Modern Foreign Language and either Geography or History in their options choices.

OPTIONS DISCUSSIONS All students will have a one-to-one discussion with either their Key Stage 3 or 4 Lead or a member of the Senior Leadership Team. This discussion will focus on each student’s current progress levels, attitude to learning and career aspirations. We will discuss which subjects you are achieving well in, which subjects you enjoy and which subjects will most likely help with your choice of career, if you currently have one in mind.

It is vital that students and parents/carers think carefully about option choices as there will be no chance to change once courses start in September.

It is hoped that the information in this booklet will give students and parents/carers a clear picture of the different courses offered. We hope that decisions about these courses will be made in partnership between students, parents/carers and school.

SUBJECTS TAKEN BY ALL STUDENTS All students will follow courses leading to GCSEs in Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, either Double Award Sciences or Separate Science . All students will also follow nonexamined courses in PE (once a week), Citizenship, PHSE, CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance) and RE through Aspirational Days.

All students currently in sets 1 for Science will follow a course leading to GCSEs in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. All other students will follow a course leading to a Double GCSE in Science (Core Science and Additional Science).

OPTION BLOCK A In the first option block, students must choose ONE GCSE course. The choices are:*History *Geography *French *Computer Science

OPTION BLOCK B In the second option block, students must choose ONE course. It must be different to that chosen in Option Block A. The courses on offer are a mixture of GCSEs and BTECs. All BTEC courses are vocational qualifications. The choices are:*Geography *Religious Studies *French *Product Design - Textiles *Btec Travel & Tourism *Btec Music

OPTION BLOCK C In the third option block you must choose ONE further course. It must be different from those chosen in Blocks A and B. Again there is a mixture of GCSE and BTEC course. The choices are:*Separate Science (compulsory for set 1 only)

It is vital that you make the right choices for you as, due to the complexity of the timetable, there will be little or no chance of changing options once the courses have started in September.

Every effort will then be made to give you first choices, however, we cannot guarantee that every choice made will be granted. This will be subject to the availability of staffing and the viability of the course (if the course is under subscribed it will not run).

GCSE English Language

What is GCSE English Language about?

The AQA syllabus followed at Blackpool Aspire Academy fulfils the statutory requirements for the National Curriculum. The attainment targets of speaking and listening, reading and writing are examined in detail.

What will I learn?

GCSE English Language is designed on the basis that students should read and be assessed on high quality, challenging texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

For GCSE English Language, students should: • read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literary non-fiction as well as other writing such as reviews and journalism • read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts • summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts • use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing • write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately • use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately • acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language • listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively How will I learn?

The English Language courses at Blackpool Aspire Academy High School are an excellent preparation for English Language, English Literature, Media and Communications courses at a higher level.

What is GCSE English Literature about?

What will I learn?

Studying GCSE English Literature should encourage students to read widely for pleasure, and as a preparation for studying literature at a higher level.

For GCSE English Literature. students should: • read a wide range of classic literature fluently and with good understanding, and make connections • across their reading • read in depth, critically and evaluative, so that they are able to discuss and explain their • understanding and ideas • develop the habit of reading widely and often • appreciate the depth and power of the English literary heritage • write accurately, effectively and analytically about their reading, using Standard English • acquire and use a wide vocabulary, including the grammatical terminology and other literary and linguistic terms they need to criticise and analyse what they read.

How will I learn?

GCSE students learn by reading and discussing a wide range of literary and media texts from a broad spectrum of genres, cultures and historical periods and by writing in a variety of contexts.

This qualification is assessed entirely by written examinations at the end of the course.

Homework will be set by individual teachers each week. Tasks could include skills practice, research and reading exercises. In the build up to your exams there is a workbook you will be expected to complete. Students will need to read and re-read the Literature texts independently and learn quotations to use in the examinations. Students will be provided with set texts and revision material to aid independent study.

Where will it take me?

A grade ‘4’ in English is essential for entry to reputable Further and Higher Education Institutions and is often used by employers as a selection criterion. The English Language and Literature courses at Blackpool Aspire Academy High School are an excellent preparation for English Language, English Literature, Media and Communications courses at a higher level.

GCSE Mathematics

(EB)

What is GCSE Mathematics about?

The GCSE Mathematics examination is the means of assessing each student’s achievement in mathematics during Key Stage 4. All students will follow a linear scheme of work and successful candidates will be awarded a grade from 1 to 9, where 9 is the highest. There will be two tiers of entry: Foundation (grades 1 to 5) and Higher (grades 4 to 9).

What will I learn?

By the end of the course candidates are expected to be able to:  Recall mathematical facts and apply these facts in real life situations;  Present mathematical work, including graphs, tables and diagrams in a way which can be understood and interpreted by others;  Select the relevant mathematical skills to apply to a problem or situation;  Cope with mathematical calculations with or without a calculator;  Use mathematical skills to solve problems.  Demonstrate high levels of conceptual understanding in mathematics What coursework will I need to do?

There is no coursework for GCSE Mathematics.

How will I be assessed?

Students will take three 90-minute examinations at the end of Year 11, one of which will be without the use of a calculator.

What homework will I have?

It is essential to complete homework in mathematics as it helps to consolidate classroom learning.

Homework will be set and completed once a week.

Any special requirements?

All students are expected to have a pen, pencil, ruler, pair of compasses, protractor, and a scientific calculator with them for every lesson.

Where will it take me?

Maths is for everyone. It is a very important qualification for all jobs and the ability to tackle mathematical tasks is one which you will continue to use throughout your life. It is a requirement to access most jobs, essential for entry into all reputable Further and Higher Education institutes, and is expected for apprenticeships.

What is GCSE Core Science about?

This course encourages students to develop their interest and enthusiasm for science and develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods. It also enables students to acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works.

What will I learn?

You will learn how science works and its essential role in society. All students study a core of scientific principles in biology, physics and chemistry. You will learn how to acquire scientific skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for progression to further learning.

Course Structure Students will study three units of work, one in each of biology, chemistry and physics, leading to GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11 and an award in core science. The examinations make up 100% of the final mark. All GCSE examinations will take place at the end of Year 11.

What will I learn?

GCSE Art and Design What is GCSE Art & Design?

The art and design course operates in modules that cover a variety of media and techniques, to produce artwork in both two and three dimensions.

There are two units of work: Unit 1—two modules Each module of work comprises of studies, investigations and research into a variety of artists and cultures. Work is then selected from each module to represent your ‘Unit 1:Portfolio of Work’.

Unit 2 This unit comprises of a question paper set by AQA. Students have time to prepare, research and plan ideas in readiness for a 10 hour sustained, focused study. All work produced during this time represents the ‘Unit 2:Externally Set Task’.

What will I learn?

You will learn about design and techniques of painting, drawing and sculpture work from many artists and cultures which will be evident in your own work.

GCSE Business Studies What is GCSE Business Studies about?

Knowledge of how and why businesses operate will be of great relevance to all young people, as they finish their education and enter the world of work. Businesses are part of our everyday lives, providing us with the products we need, communicating relentlessly with us through advertising, providing employment and inventing new products and services that transform how we live. This course focuses on what businesses are and how they organise themselves to achieve their objectives.

What will I learn?

What is a business and what does it do? The term ‘business’ can cover anything from a sole trader in a local market to a multinational corporation selling products to millions of people all over the world. You will explore different types of business ownership and how these relate to the size and scale of a business, as well as how the type of ownership impacts on the responsibilities of the owners of a business. Combined with looking at types of business model, you can begin to understand how diverse the world of business is. You will use your understanding of business to investigate what businesses do by examining the aims and objectives they set, the importance of knowing their market and understanding the influence of their stakeholders.

What is GCSE Computer Science about?

Computer Science is a rapidly growing subject and is seen as an underpinning subject across science and engineering and indeed many other subjects. It involves the study of computers, including how they work and looking at the growth in the mobile device market.

What will I learn?

GCSE Dance What is GCSE Dance about?

GCSE Dance will enable you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of dance as a choreographer and performer. You will also appreciate the contribution of dance to your personal and social health, fitness and wellbeing and be aware of the range of opportunities and pathways available in dance.

What will I learn?

You will apply and adapt a wide range of skills and techniques effectively in performing and choreographing dance, including the ability to improvise. You will also create dance for a range of purpose and in response to different stimuli, and develop the ability to analyse, evaluate and appreciate dance.

What is GCSE French about?

Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Students learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education and employment. A GCSE in French is highly valued and sought after by employers not only for its linguistic skills but also for the communication and problem-solving skills you will develop when studying it at GCSE. What is the course structure?

As well as building on the topics you studied in KS3, you will be moving on to new topics such as media, travel and tourism, business and work.

You will continue to develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

What will I learn?

Linguistic skills and confidence are the keys to becoming successful communicators. When learning another language, students build on their literacy skills in English and improve their ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas.

Learning another language involves learning about another culture. This stimulates students’ curiosity and develops enquiring minds. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own culture and compare it with that of other countries.

Students are required to work independently, as well as in pairs and groups, constantly practising their spoken and written language skills, evaluating their progress and the effectiveness of their approach.

If you enjoy communicating with other people, finding out how language works and learning about different countries and cultures, studying GCSE French is an excellent choice which appeals to our students’ needs, strengths and interests. The Modern Languages team strongly encourages students to opt for French as having a language GCSE will open many doors for the future and is a lifelong skill.

GCSE Geography

What is GCSE Geography about?

Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. The course will give you the chance to get to grips with some of the big global questions and understand the social, economic and physical forces and processes which shape and change our world. So many of the world's current problems boil down to Geography, and we need the geographers of the future to help us understand them.

Geography at GCSE level is both challenging and rewarding. If you take an interest in our changing world, then this is the subject for you. Aspire Academy’s Geography department has been awarded ‘Centre of Excellence’ status by the Geographical Association for quality teaching and learning; in addition, last year’s exam results were amongst the best in school (77% A*-C).

What will I learn?

The course focuses on the following units: • Restless Earth (plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis) • The Living World (temperate deciduous woodlands, hot deserts and tropical rainforest ecosystems) • Water on the Land (river processes and features, river flooding and water supply) • Changing Urban Environments (problems in rich and poor cities, sustainable cities and squatter settlements) • Tourism (Mass tourism, sustainable tourism and tourism in extreme environments) • Population Change (The Demographic transition Model, migration and population change in the UK, China and India) GCSE Geography is assessed by two examinations at the end of Year 11 (75%) and coursework (25%) in the local area.

GCSE History

(EB)

What is GCSE History about?

GCSE History remains a very popular choice for students to study at GCSE and offers a highly valued and academic qualification which can lead to many other study paths in Further and Higher education. The GCSE consists of two exams to be taken in the Summer of 2017 and one piece of controlled assessment to be completed at the most convenient moment of the course.

All students study Medicine Through Time, charting the development of Medicine from Pre-History to modern times and complete an exam based on this study. Students then study Germany 19191945, an in depth study of German society at this time; this is also assessed in an examination at the end of the course.

The content for the Controlled Assessment is a study of Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire; students complete fieldwork and then complete a coursework style controlled assessment on their visit.

What will I learn?

You will learn about how and why key events in world history occurred. You will learn how and why historic events occur and what effects these changes have had on the world. You will learn how to analyse and evaluate historical source evidence and learn about historians’ interpretations of events.

GCSE Physical Education What is GCSE Physical Education about?

GCSE Physical Education involves both playing sport and learning about how to improve yourself in sport. It is relevant to many varied careers and shows how you value your fitness and health.

What will I learn?

The course is about personal performance in a variety of different physical activities, the ability to implement the rules and regulations and the knowledge to analyse and evaluate your own and others performance. There will also be the opportunity to study how the human body works, why and how to train and what the limitations are. A section of work will also study sport in today’s society. The theory work is very demanding.

GCSE Product Design What is GCSE Product Design about?

In Product Design you will cover every aspect of Product Development from the Designing and Planning to the Manufacturing, Testing and Evaluating. You will develop your skills and creativity through undertaking both traditional design activities as well as Computer Aided Design projects.

You will be expected to work safely both independently and as an effective team member. You will study how products have evolved over time and what has influenced this.

What will I learn?

You will develop and refine your skills in various areas, Research and Investigation, Design and Development through traditional drawing, Computer aided design and Modelling. You will also become a critical thinking to test and evaluate existing products as well as products you have created. You will develop your understanding of a range of processes available to you and to the industry, use different tools and equipment to a high level whilst demonstrating excellent health and safety knowledge. You will work with a range of traditional materials and learn about the applications of modern, smart materials in design.

Throughout the course you will specialise in a specific discipline within Textiles to complete the given project for a target market.

GCSE Religious Studies What is GCSE Religious Studies about?

Gone are the days when it was thought that the only career opportunities available with Religious Studies were being a vicar or nun! In the modern world it is not only accepted as an academic qualification when applying for any number of professions from journalism, the media and drama to nursing, the police, social work and the law, but it is also accepted as an entry qualification for university with the same status as all other subjects.

This course examines modern day problems and issues, including marriage, divorce, the environment, animal rights, war, medical ethics, law, evil, abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty. These are ongoing issues that will touch the lives of millions of people worldwide and maybe even yourself. We will also apply beliefs from religions to these issues.

What will I learn?

"Being allowed to express my opinions was something new and satisfying. I feel more confident about myself and am clearer about what I think and believe".

Are you willing to stand out from the crowd and dare to be different? If you are interested in expressing your ideas and are open minded enough to hear and appreciate other people's views, then GCSE Religious Studies Full Course is an ideal course for you to take.

This course enables pupils to study the issues in greater depth and Full Course pupils will not be entered for any examinations until Year 11. With this added maturity, many pupils achieve outstanding results! Two religions are studied:a) Christianity, which deals not only with topics such as the existence of God, but also with relevant modern issues such as prejudice and discrimination, wealth and poverty, relationships and environment ethics - plenty of discussion and argument here! b) Buddhism, which always proves popular as it is something completely different, colourful and challenging.

BTEC First Awards are practical, work related courses. They give you the skills and knowledge you need to kick-start your career and are a nationally recognised qualification. BTEC First Award in Performing Arts (Acting) Studying acting helps boost confidence, decision-making, interaction with others and the ability to perform. It prepares the student for further study of Performing Arts at College and beyond as well as in many careers such as Law and Public Services.

Btec Performing Arts (Acting) is a vocational course where students have the opportunity to explore the Performing Arts Industry. The necessary qualities to make good progress during this course are excellent attendance and a high degree of independent learning and self-discipline.

Btec Performing Arts (Acting) is not an easy option; it demands committed work inside and outside of the lesson throughout the course. Students will be expected to build on skills and strategies explored during KS3 and enhance their knowledge by studying a variety of Theatre Practitioners such as Stanislavski, scripted and improvised plays and character research. Students will be required to act on their own and in a group.

A BTEC First Award is equivalent to one GCSE grade A*– C. What will I Learn?

BTEC First Award in Travel & Tourism Travel and Tourism is an ideal subject to choose if you are interested in the travel and tourism industry; living in Blackpool, you should be!

It is a vocational subject in which students learn about how the travel and tourism industry operates on both local and global scales. Tasks are varied and range from booking holidays for specific customers to investigating sustainable tourism in the UK. What will I Learn?

Units studied within the course: • The UK Travel and Tourism Sector (externally assessed by examination) • UK Travel and Tourism Destinations (internally assessed) • International Travel and Tourism Destinations (internally assessed) • Factors Affecting Worldwide Travel and Tourism (internally assessed) The Award is equivalent to a GCSE at grade ‘C’ and is also available as a Level 1 qualification. It is taught within the school’s Geography Department by a well qualified and experienced team. 75% of the course is based on units completed during lessons which are internally assessed; the remaining 25% is assessed by an examination at the end of Year 10, with an option to re-take the exam at the end of Year 11 if necessary. Travel and Tourism classes tend to be small, allowing students more opportunity to be successful within the internal units. Currently, BTEC Travel and Tourism has a 100% pass rate within school.
