Ashton Community Science College – Mathematics Faculty The Faculty is currently staffed by five experienced mathematicians, and two level three Teaching Assistants. We are fortunate to have a mathematics area of five classrooms, all of which are equipped with interactive whiteboards and personal computers for use by staff. In addition to this the Head of Faculty’s room has 23 networked computers and all members of the faculty are expected to use this facility, when appropriate, to broaden the mathematical experiences of our pupils. We also have a small working area where the faculty and/or support staff can work with small groups or on a one-to-one basis with individuals to develop their mathematical skills and understanding. A wide variety of software is available to help deliver the mathematics curriculum. Mymaths and Mangahigh are made available to all pupils and is a popular choice for revision and/or homework tasks. The Faculty is constantly updating the electronic based resources in line with new initiatives, all of which are easily shared across the school network. From September the Faculty is embracing the New National Curriculum and delivering a ‘Mastery’ Curriculum. We believe that all pupils should become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice. This in turn allows the pupils to develop conceptual understanding and be able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems. Pupils are set on entry into Year 7 and taught in two equal bands. In Years 8 to 11 pupils are streamed within the whole year group which allows finer tuning of sets. The KS4 curriculum starts in Year 9 and our pupils currently follow the WJEC (Welsh Board) linear syllabus. The Mathematics Faculty is a high performing faculty achieving above the national average both in terms of achievement and progress. Over the past five years our results have improved significantly and we are on track to maintain the high standards again this year. Mathematics % A*-C %A*/A 3LP 4LP

The responsibility of delivering a core subject to the young mathematicians at our school requires dedication, patience, supportiveness, a sense of humour and great deal of enthusiasm for our subject. We require a colleague who is committed to helping the Faculty improve further the high standards already in place and who is an inspirational and motivational practitioner, receptive to innovative practices. The Mathematics Faculty is proud of the pupil/teacher relationships that exist at Ashton Community Science College and we would welcome someone who can add to that team.
