Page 1

Structure of the Tests All children will be familiar with these types of tests as we will be practising past papers, and will continue to do so until SATs week. Reading  The children will be assessed through the use of a comprehension style paper in which your child must read passages of text and answer questions based on it.  The questions may be multiple choice or require a written answer in the form of a sentence.  Children who achieve well on this paper will be entered for the level 3 paper. The level 3 paper works in exactly the same way as the first paper.  A secure level 2 is equivalent to a reading book in the turquoise band. Writing  The writing focus is split into 2 parts - a short and a long write. • Short write approx 30 mins. • Long write approx 45 mins.  There are 2 parts so that a range of genre can be assessed.  The spelling of words is not assessed in this section. However, no words will be given to the children as they are encouraged to write independently.  Handwriting marks are given in this section. Spelling  The children have a separate spelling test which is in 2 parts. • Part 1 involves the children looking at a picture and then writing the word underneath. • Part 2 requires the children to write the appropriate word in the space in a sentence.  I will tell the children the words they need to write. The writing, spelling and handwriting marks are added together to give an overall level. Numeracy  The paper will be read to all the children so that their maths ability can be assessed.  The test will assess all aspects of Numeracy.  Children who achieve well on this paper will be entered for the level 3 paper. The level 3 paper works in exactly the same way as the first paper.
