SCIENCE The children will be learning about Animals this term. As part of British Science week starting on th 13 March 2015 and the total solar eclipse that th will take place on 20 March 2015, we will be completing a whole school topic on Space and the Solar System. BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:   

To identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. To identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. To describe and compare the structure of a variety of animals.

GEOGRAPHY This half term, the children will learn how to locate the different countries that make up the United Kingdom. BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:  

ENGLISH RELIGION:

• To respond speedily with the correct sounds to graphemes for all taught phonemes. • To read accurately by blending sounds in unfamiliar words containing phonemes already taught • To read common exception words (red words) READING: (Delivered through Shared whole class reading/Guided Reading) • To check that text makes sense to them as they read and correcting inaccurate reading. • To discuss the significance of the title and events. • To make inferences on the basis of what is said and done. • To predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far.

This half term we will be looking at the CAFOD unit of work The Universal Church – World Neighbours The children will learn that the Church is Universal and that everyone is our neighbour and is loved by God. We will talk about what makes a good neighbour and that loving our neighbour is an essential part of Christian living. The children learn about Lent and Easter. They will listen to the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and think about how they can welcome Jesus. They will learn that Jesus died on Good Friday and that God raised him from the dead on Easter Sunday. COLLECTIVE WORSHIP: Each week we have a different statement to live by which helps us live our life as Jesus taught us. We discuss these in class and have a class reflection based around these each week.

WRITING: 

To sequence sentences to form short narratives.

HANDWRITING: (Delivered through timetabled sessions using our new Nelson Handwriting Scheme)  

To develop a comfortable and efficient pencil grip To form lower case letters correctly, starting and finishing in the correct place.

SPELLING:   

To spell words containing all taught phonemes To spell common exception words (red words) To use the spelling rule for adding –s or –es as the plural marker for nouns.

PUNCTUATION:   

To name and locate the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom. To use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key physical features including beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean and river. To use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom.

To begin to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop. To join words and clauses using ‘and’. To use a capital letter for the names of people, places, days of the week and the pronoun ‘I’

PE

BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:  

To know about significant events from the past. To learn about the lives of significant individuals who have contributed to international achievements.

MUSIC BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:  

To listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music. To experiment with, create, select and combine sounds.

ART AND DESIGN As artists, the children will be developing their collage skills by making choices about the size, shape, colour and texture of the materials they use. The children will develop their techniques for measuring, cutting out and joining together materials.

BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:  To develop a wide range of art and design

PE is on Fridays with Mr Feighan. Please ensure your child has a PE kit in school.

HISTORY As part of our work on the solar eclipse, the children will be learning about Neil Armstrong and the first landing on the moon.

RE

PHONICS: (Delivered through daily timetabled sessions using Read Write Inc /Guided Reading)

MATHEMATICS The children will develop their mathematical skills through both practical and recorded work in a daily Mathematics lesson and a Mental Mathematics session.

NUMBER:     

To read and write numbers to 100 in numerals. To identify one more or one less and ten more or less than a given number. To read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words To be able to add and subtract using numbers up to 20. To solve missing number problems. MENTAL MATHEMATICS: (Daily focus on core skills)  To count to and across 100, forwards and backwards starting at 0, 1 or from any given nmber.  To know number bonds to 20.  To know doubles of numbers up to 10 + 10  To count in multiples of twos, fives and tens.

MEASUREMENT: 

To recognise and use language relating to dates such as days of the week, months, years.

SHAPE: To recognise and name common 3D shapes.

COMPUTING The children will be learning that algorithms are an accurate sequence of instructions.

BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:   

To understand what algorithms are To write an algorithm for an everyday activity. To program a Bee Bot with directional commands.
