SCIENCE Our focus will be ‘Light and Dark’ looking at different light sources, how the sun moves throughout the day and what happens with the absence of light

BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:   

To identify and name a variety of sources of light that we can see with our eyes, including electric light, flames and the sun. To explain that darkness is the absence of light. To compare the variety of sources of light.

To become familiar with SET 2 phonemes To respond speedily with the correct sounds to graphemes for all taught phonemes. To read accurately by blending sounds in unfamiliar words containing phonemes already taught To read common exception words (red words) To read aloud accurately books that are consistent with their developing phonic knowledge and that do not require them to use other strategies to work out words. READING: (Delivered through Shared whole class reading) • To listen to a wide range of poems, stories and non-fiction texts beyond their own reading level • To become very familiar with key stories, retelling them and considering their particular characteristics • To discuss the significance of the title and events in the book. 

As part of the topic the children will be finding out about the weather and climatic conditions due to seasonal change..

GEOGRAPHY

ENGLISH

PHONICS: (Delivered through daily timetabled sessions using Read Write Inc /Guided Reading)

To use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key human features. To identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK. To know what causes night and day. To explore different sources of light in our school and local area.

To write sentences by saying out loud what they are going to write about and composing the sentence orally before writing it.  To sequence sentences to form a short narrative.  To re-read what they have written to check that it makes sense. HANDWRITING: (Delivered through timetabled sessions using our new Nelson Handwriting Scheme)  To develop a comfortable and efficient pencil grip  To form lower case letters correctly, starting and finishing in the correct place.  

To spell words containing all taught phonemes To spell common exception words (red words)

To leave spaces between words To begin to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop To use a capital letter for the names of people, places, days of the week and the pronoun ‘I’

BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:

This topic is designed to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of Mary and her role in God’s sending of his Son, Jesus. It introduces the children to the stories of the Nativity of Jesus in Luke’s Gospel which are told from Mary’s point of view. The topic also gives opportunities for the children to learn about the liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas and their respective rituals, signs and symbols.

HISTORY The children will be exploring their own past as well as that of their families. They will also be learning about celebrations, customs, practises and festivals including Bonfire night, Remembrance Day and Christmas.

RE RELIGION: Mary, Mother of God:

MATHEMATICS The children will develop their mathematical skills through both practical and recorded work in a daily Mathematics lesson and a Mental Mathematics session.

NUMBER:       

To count up to at least 20 objects To order numbers to 20 To count, read and write numbers to 100. To identify one more or one less than a given number. ART AND DESIGN

We will study the work of Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry night and then use his ‘swirly’ style to recreate our own night time pictures. BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:  

To describe what we see and like in the work of another artist. To look at the work of Vincent Van Gogh
