SCIENCE The children will be learning about Seasonal changes and looking at weather changes during winter. They will be investigating properties of materials as well as exploring ice and water. The children will explore how different animals are best suited for their environment, drawing comparisons between animals in the Arctic/Antarctic and those in the UK. BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:
To observe changes across the four seasons. To observe and describe the weather associated with the season. To explore and describe the changes to everyday materials when they are heated or cooled.
GEOGRAPHY As part of the topic the children will learn how to locate different continents of the world and Polar Regions using atlases, globes and google earth. They will find out why it is colder in the Polar Regions and compare the climate to that of the UK. BROAD LEARNING INTENTIONS:

ART AND DESIGN As artists, the children will be developing their collage skills by making choices about the size, shape, colour and texture of the materials they use. The children will develop their techniques for measuring, cutting out and joining together materials.

HISTORY The children will be learning about Ernest Shackleton and the early expeditions of the Antarctic. They will learn about how the landscapes of the Polar Regions have changed over time as a result of the melting of the polar ice caps.
This topic is designed to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of what it means to belong to the family called the Church. There are opportunities at this point to explore the celebration of Baptism. It introduces the topic by exploring what it means to belong to a family and the school community. The topic also gives opportunities for the children to know that God is our Father in heaven and about special celebrations that take place in Church. The children will learn about the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and that the title ‘Jesus, light of the world’ comes from this story. COLLECTIVE WORSHIP: Each week we have a different statement to live by which helps us live our life as Jesus taught us. We discuss these in class and have a class reflection based around these each week.
PUNCTUATION:
To identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK and cold areas of the world in relation to the equator. To use maps, atlases and globes to identify the UK as well as areas studied. To name and locate the seven continents and five oceans.
