Overview Assertive mentoring scheme for year 11 students. Specific targeting of PP students. ESLA mentors consist of : * SLT * Liverpool John Lennon Airport volunteers (20 mentors on a weekly basis) * New Beginnings partnership. A package of assertive mentoring for our year 11 students which: * Is evidence based: Use of predicted grades and assessment data to select students ensuring mentor/mentee targets are set and monitored * Provides academic/ social interventions and solutions to issues highlighted by the mentee * Provides specific targeted support. The mentor uses the evidence to inform discussion and produce targets for the student Purpose The overriding purpose of the mentoring scheme is to raise the student’s attainment and achievement, and ensure the students become more independent in managing their own learning and revision. 70% of students chosen are pupil premium students. Students have been selected based upon the basis that they needed extra support, either academically or due to pastoral or attendance concerns. Each mentor has been asked to write a target and reflection following each 10 minute meeting. Following the meeting, Mr Barry Wheller who runs the scheme has met with each mentor to gain verbal feedback and an overview of immediate concerns. Each student’s target/reflection sheet has been examined for any issues which can be solved. The assertive mentoring is designed to allow students to foster trusting relationships, where students can voice their concerns about their exams and where mentors provide advice and solutions to the issues. The students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning rather than a ‘path of least resistance’. What we did Out of 160 year 11 students, 74 students have been highlighted as those who would most benefit from assertive mentoring in the lead up to their examinations. Of these 74 students 70% are Pupil Premium. Students were also selected based upon the following: 1. Attendance below 95% 2. Attendance in danger of reaching the PA range (87% and below) 3. 5 A*-C WITHOUT English(based on assessment 3 results)
