Reception information

Reading In Foundation Stage we love to listen to a variety of books which include fiction, non-fiction and picture books.

We recognise that reading is a complex skill and for this reason, there are several stages that your child will encounter before they receive a school ‘reading book.

Once your child receives a reading book we would ask you to practise at home every night and sign and date the blue reading record book. Please ensure that this in school every day. Books will be changed on a regular basis.

Bookmarks Your child will receive a ‘bookmark’ that will help you to explore the book with your child.

Word Boxes These are simple cvc words that are sent home for your child to blend. Some children find this difficult at first, but please persevere. Your child will be tested in school and new words will be given if correct. Please can you date and record your child’s progress in the blue reading record book.

Tricky Words Tricky words are words that cannot be blended for example ‘was/no Your child will be taught these words during our phonic sessions. There are four sets in total.

Writing Writing for many children is difficult and we understand in Foundation Stage that this is dependent on the individual child and their stage of development. As a consequence in the early stages we encourage lots of pre-writing skills e.g threading. During our phonics sessions your child will be shown how to write letters using a cursive script as shown.

We love getting messy in Foundation Stage so please forgive us if sometimes we come home with dirty clothes – it means we’ve been having a good time being creative!

Snack In Foundation Stage the children help to choose and make our snack. We use a variety of foods to encourage your child to try new things. Preparing snack gives us the opportunity to discuss mathematical concepts such as halves, quarters etc.

Physical activities are a big part of our learning. We enjoy sessions outside and have the opportunity to use bikes and scooters. Please can you ensure that your child always has a suitable coat and hats, gloves and scarves in the colder months. Our indoor session using apparatus is on Wednesday. For this session children need their PE kits( Named shorts and T-shirts only in a named bag).Part of our learning includes dressing and undressing ourselves – buttons and all! Please can you practice this with your child.

Trips/Visitors We pride ourselves in some awesome ‘trips and visitors’. Please can you ensure that you return the permission slips signed with payment as soon as possible.

Clothing Please can you ensure that your child always has appropriate clothing on for school especially as we spend a lot of time outside. All items of clothing should be clearly named please.

Buddies We really enjoy working with our Year 6 Buddies. We have lots of fun reading, playing games, using the computers to name just a few. We like our Wednesday afternoon Buddy time.

Home time This can be a stressful time for young children. Please can you let us know if there is a change to normal arrangements. We will not allow your child to leave our care if we have not been advised of changes. Please could we ask that you stand in front of the gate so that we can discharge the children quickly and efficiently.

Behaviour In Foundation Stage we use a ‘traffic light’ system for behaviour. The rules have been explained to the children and they understand that :Green = good Yellow = Need to think Red = Inappropriate / loss of Friday morning play.

In Foundation Stage we don’t have weekly homework. However, we tend to send something home at the end of a half term. Please could you ensure that it has your child’s name on and is sent back to school on the first day back.
