In preparation for KS2 SATs: To increase familiarity of a wide range of books by reading and discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry and non-fiction, including reference or textbooks. To develop understanding of text by making inferences and deductions based on textual evidence as well as increasing awareness of writer’s language choices and explaining these choices. To continue to practise past SATs questions.
• Writing
Reviewing various fiction genre writing features. Exploring what makes an exciting opening to a story e.g. develop setting and character profiles Planning a Mystery Genre Story Assessed piece of Mystery Genre writing Peer assessment and Self assessment areas of focus; Selecting appropriate form of writing, identifying audience and purpose, developing material effectively across the text by ensuring links between paragraphs. Variety in length, structure and/or subject of sentences. Selecting grammar and vocabulary to add meaning and atmosphere to their writing.

In preparation for KS2 SATs: Revisit and revise word classes, punctuation and spellings in preparation for SPAG test. Linking ideas across paragraphs using a wider range of cohesive devices, including layout devices such as headings, subheadings, columns etc.

Number
Interpret frequency and line graphs including pie charts and bar charts etc. Read scales and compare data sets and respond to questions which enable the children to apply their understanding. Revise and revisit place value and all four number operations, continue to practise written methods and mental methods. Use and apply knowledge to real life word problems.
Begin to understand simple ratio Continue to build on understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages by answering real life word problems based on these in order for children to apply their learning.
Shape, Space and Measure
Learn and apply knowledge of the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Use and apply knowledge of co-ordinates. Describe movements between positions as translations. Learn and apply knowledge of the properties of all triangles. Compare and classify geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles, based on their properties and sizes. Know and use angle sum of a triangle and that of angles at a point.
Revise and revisit converting between different units of metric measure e.g. kg-g, mm – cm – m. Measure and calculate perimeter and area of shapes. Read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12 and 24 hour clocks. Apply knowledge by solving real life problems involving measure including time. To support children’s application of mathematical concepts through revisiting and revising past SATs style questions.

Our focus this half term is Exercise, Health and the Circulatory System and the learning goals are as follows: LO: To identify the main parts of the human circulatory system. LO: To understand that the heart is a major organ made of muscle. LO: To describe the functions of the heart, blood and blood vessels. LO: To understand that the blood carries oxygen to different parts of the body and that the heart pumps the blood around the body through blood vessels.
LO: To understand that during exercise muscles need more oxygen so the heart beats faster and our breathing and pulse rate increases. LO: To create an exercise trail with vigorous less energetic and rest stations. LO: To explain the purpose behind each station and what is happening in the body at each point in the trail. LO: To recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and life style on the way your body functions. LO: To understand that tobacco, alcohol and other ‘drugs’ can be harmful.

Design & Technology Our focus this half term is children as food heroes. They will be designing a healthy meal appropriate for various different needs, such as diabetics, hospital patient, primary school child, elderly and a family. We will be researching the work of Jamie Oliver and the impact he had Meal times at schools. We would welcome any support from parents who are in the food industry.
PSHE and SMSC How we interact with others, in school and in the local community and with others in a wider sense e.g. Comenius, Sporting Clubs. We will also be looking at morals and how they effect ourselves and others. In relation to spiritual we will use assemblies and reflection times and thinking about the ‘bigger questions’. In relation to cultural understanding we will be focusing on British traditions, which includes Pancake Day and St George’s Day. We will also be considering Citizenship through Red Nose Day.

Our focus this half term is to join in and respond to spoken language. To further develop accurate pronunciation Engage in conversations, songs and rhymes. To broaden their French vocabulary. To write French phrases and understand basic grammar.

Education
Linked to our Healthy Heart Heroes, we will be focusing on aerobic exercise, using running, step ups, squats, push ups, bleep test, burpees etc. The children will also have the opportunity to develop their own exercise at a mild, moderate and intense level.
In music this term, we will be comparing and contrasting the music and story lines of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Wicked’. The objectives we will be focusing on are: LO: To understand and use musical vocabulary. LO: To compare and contrast the character of Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West) in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Wicked’. LO: To learn a song from the musical ‘Wicked’
LO: To play an untuned instrument with control ad rhythmic accuracy. LO: To compare the tone, duration and timbre of two pieces of music.
