How to support your child’s learning at home As well as helping your children to learn their times tables, here are some other ideas to support your child’s learning at home: Time Talking about time, e.g. How long is it until lunch time? The journey takes 2½ hours, when will we arrive? We need to be there at 2.00 pm, when do we need to leave home? Many children will still need practice with reading clock times, particularly minutes past and minutes to the hour. If at all possible your child should have and use a watch.

Homework Year 5 children are given learning log homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go. It must be completed to an acceptable standard.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

Mr Smith runs a drop in homework club on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

Money Handling amounts of money when shopping, working out total costs, working out change, checking receipts. Working out prices of sale items, e.g. 20% off. Managing pocket money and saving for things.

Make sure you know your targets and are constantly striving to achieve them.

Spring Term 2

Creative Curriculum: English: Our class novel is the children’s classic The Midnight Fox. We will use it to help us generate ideas for writing in different genres, including newspaper reports, and will continue to use drama to help us develop ideas for writing.

Link with The Gambia: Our successful link with the Gambia continues this term after our fabulous enterprise day. We will be finding out about plants and trees in our local area and sharing this information with friends in The Gambia.

Our Art Attack creative curriculum theme this half term involves lots of exciting Art, Design and Technology, Science and Computing activities.

The theme launches with a whole day of art activities and will finish with a display to celebrate all our learning.

We are looking forward to visiting Victoria Park so that we can research animal and plant life cycles.

Maths: Children will continue to develop their mental and written calculation skills and extend this to calculating with fractions. They will develop their knowledge of 2d and 3d shapes including using angles to draw and catagorise shapes. A range of problem solving activities will take place where children will apply their new skills and learning.

Science: Our focus on living things and their habitats will enable us to gain an understanding of the life cycles of different animals, including mammals, amphibians, insects and birds as well as flowering and non flowering plants. Practical experiences in the local park will help bring our learning to life.

Design and Technology: We will explore how pneumatics can be used to create movement and will design and make moving animals. Our designs and finished models will be evaluated and we will identify what worked well and what we need to do to improve.

Computing: Art: We will be developing ideas inspired by natural history painting and botanical images in hand made sketchbooks, and will use a range of media to create larger pieces based on animals in their habitats that we will use as animation backgrounds.

We will create moving pictures using stop motion animation, so that the images we create in art lessons come alive! We will also continue to make PowerPoint presentations about life in England to send to our friends in Bijilo Lower basic School.
