Information for Parents Year 6G and 6M Medium Term Planning Spring Term 2015

ENGLISH SHAKESPEARE This term in English we will be linking our learning to William Shakespeare in collaboration with the MAEI project on Richard III. JOURNALISTIC WRITING During this unit pupils develop a journalistic style through considering balanced reporting. They comment critically on the language, style and success of a range of reports. Eventually this leads pupils to planning, writing & recording their own report.

SHORT STORIES WITH FLASHBACKS This unit revises work on narrative, dialogue and settings. Using the Harry Potter books, pupils explore different forms of flashback and identify its various functions. They create their own flashback in the form of a Pensieve memory.

READING POETRY This is a revision, reading unit. Pupils will read different styles of poem and recognise the poetic features that have been used. They become aware of a range of questions and how to answer them effectively. They will then go on to improve their own answers.

BALANCED ARGUMENT Can Graffiti ever be considered art? This is the question for discussion in this block as pupils use persuasive devices in speech & writing to address the issue.

Through formal letters, balanced reports & class debate this emotive subject comes alive.

MATHEMATICS –

Throughout the term the pupils will be taught the following areas of mathematics– Place-Value; Calculation skills (both written and mental); Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Ratio and Proportion; Algebra; Measurement; Properties of Shape; Position and Direction; Statistics. It is essential your child knows all their times tables up to 12x12 as they are an integral part in all the above mathematics. Mental Maths will continue to once again play an important part in our daily maths lessons.

RELIGION JESUS THE BREAD OF LIFE In this unit pupils will recall that the Sacrament of the Eucharist is a celebration of thanksgiving for the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will learn that in the Holy Mass we participate in Jesus’ sacrifice to the Father and will look deeply into what happened at the Last Supper. Pupils will learn that the bread and wine are consecrated during Mass and become the body and blood of Jesus and will learn that when we receive Holy Communion we truly receive the Risen Jesus. Pupils will explore the different parts of the Mass and become familiar with most of the responses. They will know that Jesus has chosen to stay with us in a special way in the Blessed Sacrament.

SCIENCE ANIMALS inc Humans Pupils will learn :

 To identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood  To recognise the impact of diet , exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function  To describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans.

This unit allows pupils to reflect on all God’s gifts to us and thank him. We will appreciate the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross and reflect on the sacrifices we can make during Lent.

JESUS THE SON OF GOD In this unit pupils will know that Jesus healed many people and brought others back to life. We will explore how Jesus’ miracles led many to believe that he was the Son of God and pupils will know that Jesus’ enemies plotted to have him arrested. We will explore the arrest of Jesus and the trial before the high priests. Pupils will know about Jesus’ trial before Pilate and know that Jesus was condemned to death and was crucified. We will learn what Jesus said before he died and about His resurrection.

This unit allows pupils to reflect on the miracles of Jesus. They will have the opportunity to visit Church to make the Stations of the Cross and will explore the passion, death & resurrection of Jesus through drama.

COMPUTING Pupils will create Numeracy games using the Scratch software.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Dance: Pupils will create and perform dance using a range of movement patterns, including those from different times, places and cultures. They will respond to a range of stimuli and accompaniment.

TOPIC (Foundation subjects) Richard III  Pupils will use the eight points of a compass, four-figure grid reference, symbols and key to build their knowledge of the UK and wider world.  Pupils will study the history of the Plantagenets, linking to our MAEI project on Richard III. We intend to visit York to research Henry VII and Richard III and discover more about the War of the Roses.
