How to support your child’s learning at home:  Listen to your child read for 10 minutes every day.  Help them to learn their times tables.  Ensure that your child completes their homework.  Provide your child with a quiet place to work/read.

Don’t forget that PE/swimming is on Wednesday.

Homework goes home on a Friday and is due in by Tuesday/Wednesday.

Spellings go home on Friday to be tested the following Friday.

Curriculum Overview Year 4 Spring Term 1

English:

Creative Curriculum:

In Literacy we will be focusing on Newspaper recounts. As well as identifying the key features of newspaper reports, the children will be turning well known Nursery Rhymes into reports using their journalistic writing skills. The final piece of writing will be a newspaper report about their Creative Curriculum topic.

We will be starting our work on fractions this half term. Children will learn how to identify equivalent fractions and find fractions of numbers and shapes.

Previous work on shapes will be extended by looking in greater detail at symmetry.

As well as this children will also be consolidating previous learning on formal written methods of calculation using word problems. They will also develop an understanding of positional and directional vocabulary and problems.

This half term, lesson will be based around the theme of Space. In particularly we will be focusing on the first ever Moon landing and the people responsible for it. Children will also learn about the history of space travel and the ‘Space Race’.

ICT: The children will be using ICT to present news reports about space travel and moon landings.

As well as this, the children will be learning how to use a ‘Branching Database’.

Science: In science we will be focusing on the topic of Electricity. We will explore the different uses of it and how it is created. Children will draw and create a range of electronic circuits. These circuits will include bulbs and switches.

Art, DT and Music: In Music we will be listening to and responding to music that has been inspired by Space as well as composing our own pieces.

Our art work will also be inspired by our study of Space and the planets.

Children will be making their own representation of a space rocket using junk modelling.

P.E. In PE this term we will be developing skills for invasion games such as Netball and Basketball.

Boys group 1 will start swimming on 11/2/15. Boys MUST have swimming trunks (not swimming shorts). Goggles are not allowed.
