St Michael’s CE Junior School (Controlled) Behaviour Policy At St. Michael’s CE Junior School we believe that children learn more effectively in an environment where high standards of behaviour and respect for others are valued. We aim to provide a safe, secure and peaceful community in which pupils and staff can work and grow; free from intimidation or discrimination.

This policy sets out rules and procedures that recognise the collective responsibility of staff, pupils, parents and governors in securing an environment in which children are motivated to behave well.

Good behaviour will be fostered through:  a clear set of simple rules, the reasons for which will be shared with the children;  a consistent approach to behaviour management, supported by a clearly defined set of procedures for rewarding good behaviour and sanctioning unacceptable behaviour;  PSHE lessons and Circle Time sessions that encourage children to accept responsibility for their own actions;  School and Class Council meetings aimed at giving children responsibility for their own actions;  Courteous and respectful behaviour modelled by adults.

Helping children to behave well – Rewards We believe that rewarding good behaviour is the most effective way of achieving it.

We do this by:  Actively praising children’s good behaviour, manners and efforts.  Recognising and celebrating children’s achievements and contributions through the award of Positive Certificates in assembly.  Awarding Family Points for good work and behaviour, leading to the winning family having an extra playtime for 15 minutes, on a Friday.  Encouraging classes to work and behave well as a group to earn 100 blobs/stars on their class chart for a class reward e.g DVD, class party etc.  Trusting children with positions of responsibility within the school, valuing their contribution and encouraging them to have a sense of ownership (monitors, buddies, Family Captains, Class and School Council, Young Leaders and Young Interpreters, Green Ambassadors).

Helping children to behave well – Break and Lunch time procedures Low-level misbehaviour Whilst we accept that all children like to play, our rules are in place to ensure that all children can enjoy their breaks. Any child who is seen to be playing without regard to the rules will be spoken to by an adult on duty (yellow warning). They may be given a reminder of the expected standard of behaviour or asked to have a few minutes “time out”, by standing near an adult. This enables the child to calm down before they resume play.

When children fall out Inevitably, children will fall out with their peers. Our approach is to intervene, to listen and to encourage the children to talk through the situation and to agree to resolve the matter together.

Red Slips For incidences of unacceptable or persistent behaviour children will be issued a red slip. The red slip records the reason for the slip being given. When a child receives a red slip they will have to miss their lunchtime play the following day. Staff on duty record the incident in a book held at the school office. This is then recorded on the schools electronic behaviour system. Parents are also sent a text message informing them that their child has received a red slip for their behaviour. The member of staff on rota for detention duty will collect the book and ensure those children who received a sanction are in attendance at the detention. A member of the Senior Leadership Team will monitor the names of the children who receive red slips, on a regular basis.

Duty Procedures At morning break four members of staff will be on duty at all times and will be positioned strategically within the play area. A first whistle will be blown to show that playtime is at an end and children are asked to stand quietly to show they are ready, until the second whistle is blown. The children will then walk quietly to their entrance and go to their classroom.

Positive Classroom Behaviour Management – Sanctions Every class adheres to the same behaviour ‘steps’ and these are on display within each classroom.

Step 1 When a child’s behaviour falls below expectation the teacher will remind the child of the behaviour expectations and check they understand how they broke the rule. The teacher will emphasise that the child is responsible for their behaviour and they have the opportunity to modify their behaviour at this point. Their name will be written on the board, but will be wiped off if the behaviour improves.

Step 2 If the behaviour persists the child is removed to a different place within the classroom and a tick will be put next to their name on the board.

Step 3 If despite the move the child chooses to continue with their unacceptable behaviour they will be sent to a year group leader’s classroom for 15 minutes, with a learning activity to complete. A 2nd tick will be added to their name on the board.

Step 4 Children who are unable to make positive choices within the different classroom will be sent to Mrs Lynch or Mrs Startup (Assistant Head Teachers). The child will lose a lunch time and their parents will be called.

Step 5 If a child has reached Step 4 and remains disruptive they will be sent to the Mrs Hignett the Head Teacher and their parents will be called. They may be sent home.

Serious and unacceptable behaviour The following behaviours are serious and unacceptable, they will be addressed immediately and if necessary their parents will be contacted.

Absconding or truanting Racist comments

the use of threat or any physical force towards people or property Walking away when being spoken to by an adult, answering back, swearing, defiance or the refusal to do as has been reasonably asked.

The use of any verbal or physical threats, intimidation or harm towards other members of the school community From the classroom or school premises.

Using negative language about the colour of another child’s skin or the language they speak.

Exclusions This sanction is only used in very serious circumstances, where the education or well-being of children at the school is at risk due to the behaviour of a child or group of children. Exclusions can be for a fixed term e.g. 1 day. The child will be expected to return to the school after the fixed term has ended. For very serious circumstances a permanent exclusion may be given and the child will not be able to return to the school. The use of this sanction is carried out in accordance with the Hampshire County Council Policy on Exclusion, ensuring that all procedures have been correctly adhered to.

Working with Parents We believe that the most effective way of addressing concerns about a child’s behaviour is to work together with parents. If we are concerned about aspects of a child’s behaviour then we will contact parents and invite them to a meeting to agree positive steps forward. An Individual Behaviour Plan (IBP) will be set, with clear targets and agreed rewards. The IBP will be reviewed each half term.

Referrals to other Agencies On-going concerns relating to a child’s behaviour will be discussed with the Inclusion Manager and the child’s parents. Support from outside agencies my include the Primary Behaviour Service, Educational Psychologists and Outreach services.

Parents will always be informed of the involvement of these agencies and invited to meet with them, where possible, to agree how the behaviour of their child can be helped to improve and how they can support the process.

Roles and Responsibilities All staff take a collective responsibility for consistently and fairly implementing the agreed behaviour policy. We also expect that parents will support the school in its commitment to achieve high standards of behaviour at all times.

The Head Teacher and staff monitor behaviour on a weekly basis. Governors are notified of any exclusions or serious incidents.

Staff will review the rules and procedures for behaviour annually and a report will be presented to the Governing Body with any recommendations for the forthcoming academic year.
