KS1-KS2 Music Objective Overview (2014-15) Strand Singing
Exploring & making sounds
Year 1 Find their singing voice & sing simple songs confidently. Sing with an increasing sense of pulse and rhythm. Follow pitch movements with their hands & use high, low and middle voices. Take part in singing alongside other performers.
Year 2 Sing a wide range of songs confidently & in tune at their own pitch. Recognise phrase lengths and know when to take a breath. Begin to sing with control of pitch . Sing with an awareness of other performers.
Year 3 Sing in tune using a wider range. Begin to show an awareness of the expressive elements eg timbre, tempo, dynamics when singing. Understand how mouth shape can affect voice sounds. Internalise sounds by singing some parts of a song in their head.
Explore different sources of sound (musical and non musical) Make sounds using a range of objects and percussion instruments. Recognise and name simple classroom instruments. Identify how sounds can be changed.
Make sounds & understand that they can give a message. Create and choose sounds in response to stimuli. Make a simple reasoned choice of instrument to represent a sound. Change sounds to reflect different stimuli.
Identify ways sounds can be used to accompany a song. Explore & perform different types of accompaniment. Recognise & explore different combinations of pitch sounds. Identify melodic phrases and play them by ear.
Year 4 Sing with a good awareness of pulse and control of rhythm. Recognise simple structures (phrases ) Sing expressively with awareness and control of the expressive elements eg timbre, tempo, dynamics. Create different vocal effects when singing. Analyse and comment on how sounds are used to create different moods. Continue to explore & perform different types of accompaniment. Explore and select different melodic patterns. Listen to a range of
Year 5 Sing with increasing control of breathing , posture and sound projection. Sing songs with an awareness of the different parts. Identify phrases by breathing in appropriate places. Sing with expression with others. Sing a round in at two parts Play a range of untuned instruments with increasing control. Internalise short melodies & play these on pitched instruments (play by ear) Begin to be aware of the notes a-g & how they look on a stave. Listen to a range of
Year 6 Sing with good control of breathing , posture and sound projection. Sing a round in four parts . Sing confidently as a class or small group & begin to have an awareness of how the voice can be used to improvise. Play short melodies on pitched instruments by reading simple music. Identify how a mood is created by music and lyrics. Listen to longer pieces of music & identify features.
