Target Setting Policy

Aim and Purpose Whole-school targets are determined by the Academy Council. These targets will reflect the aspirations of the School. These targets will be determined after due consideration is given to estimations provided by the Fischer Family Trust and past performance. Targets will be set for individual students in all subjects at Key Stages 3 & 4 and in English, Maths & Science at Key Stages 1 and 2. At Key Stage 4, no student will be targeted below a pass grade in any applied learning subject. Additional cross curricular targets will be set for students with SEN. Student targets in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 will be based on prior attainment at Key Stage 2. Student targets in Key Stage 2 will be set based on prior attainment at Key Stage 1. Key Stage 1 targets will be set using the assumption that all students will reach age expected levels by the end of key stage 1. Individual student targets will as a minimum reflect the whole School targets. Targets will assume that all students will make expected progress. Targets will also ensure that a significant percentage of students are targeted to exceed expected progress. Key Stage 4 Target Setting To encourage as many students as possible to achieve better than expected progress, all students will be set targets which account for 11 sub levels of progress from key stage 2 to key stage 4. Students sub level results from KS2 tests will be used to establish the KS4 targets. In English this sub level will be an average of KS2 reading, writing and GAPS tests, for Maths the sub level will be calculated from raw scores. The grid below shows the KS4 target grade against the end of key stage 2 sub level. An average key stage 2 sub level from English, Maths and Science will be used to set targets for all noncore subjects; baseline testing may be carried out and can occasionally subsequently be used to modify targets through liaison with the AP (Data/Assessment) only. Baseline tests will be standardised across the Fylde Coast Academy Trust with standardisation meetings across academies taking place as necessary. LEVEL S

Key stage 4 targets will be set for all students on entry to Unity Academy, these targets will only be increased at the end of Key stage 3, once the Academy is sure that students are making better than expected progress and have met all key stage 3 targets. Student targets will only be lowered in highly exceptional circumstances. All requests for changes in targets (increases and decreases) must be made in writing to the Assistant Principal (Data & Assessment). The Assistant Principal (Data & Assessment) will then make a decision based on the individual student’s progression to date. Key Stage 3 Target Setting Targets at KS3 in English, maths and science will be set on the basis of key stage 2 attainment (fine levels). Students will be expected and targeted to make 2 sub level progress in year 7 and year 8, as such students will be set an end of year target in each subject which reflects this. An average key stage 2 fine level will be used to set targets for non-core subject; baseline testing may be used as described in the key stage 4 section above. Levels will be subdivided; using the notation a, b and c.
