Speaking and Listening

 Listen and respond to simple rhymes, stories and songs  Recognise and respond to sound patterns and words  Retain and use vocabulary to ask and answer simple questions.  Show an understanding of words and phrases

 Memorise and present a short spoken text  Show recognition and understanding of specific words and phrases  Identify and compare different sounds  Ask and answer questions on several topics

 Prepare and practise a simple conversation, reusing familiar vocabulary and structures in new contexts  Understand and express simple opinions  Listen attentively and understand more complex phrases and sentences  Prepare a short presentation on a familiar topic

 Understand the main points and simple opinions in a spoken story, song or passage  Perform to a range of audiences either from memory or reading aloud from text  Understand longer and more complex phrases or sentences  Use spoken language confidently to initiate and sustain conversations and to tell stories  Describe people, places and things orally  Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation

Reading and Writing

 Recognise some familiar words in the written form  Make links between phonemes , rhymes and spellings, and read aloud unfamiliar words  Experiment with writing familiar words using and model and some from memory

 Read and understand a range of familiar written phrases  Follow a short, familiar text, listening and reading at the same time  Read some familiar phrases aloud and pronounce them accurately  Write simple words and phrases using a model and from memory

 Re-read frequently a variety of short texts  Make simple sentences and short texts, understanding that the order of words in a sentence influences the meaning.  Use a bilingual dictionary to check the spelling of familiar words

Intercultu ral understa nding

 Locate countries where the language is spoken  Know some facts about one country that speaks the language  Make direct / indirect contact with the country

 Learn and festivals and celebrations in different cultures  Know about some aspects of everyday life and compare them to their own  Compare traditional stories  Learn about ways of travelling to the country

 Look at further aspects of their everyday lives from the perspective of someone from another country  Recognise similarities and differences between places  Compare symbols, objects or products which represent their own culture with those of another country

 Read and understand the main points and some detail from a short written passage  Identify different text types and read short, authentic texts for enjoyment or information  Match sound to sentences and paragraphs  Describe people, places and things in writing  Write sentences on a range of topics using a model  Understand basic grammar e.g. gender, patterns of language and how to apply these to build sentences  To know how the grammar is similar or different to English.  Compare attitudes towards aspects of everyday life  Learn about role models for children in the country  Recognise and understand some of the differences between people (challenge stereotypes)  Present information about an aspect of culture
