ASHTON COMMUNITY SCIENCE COLLEGE School Policy for ROAD SAFETY Aims To involve the students via the curriculum and extended curriculum, in a programme of Road Safety Education, and to inform students and parents of issues relating to Road Safety.

The School Travel Plan, approved by the DfES in July, 2005, actively promotes Road Safety in a number of ways: ∗

Year 6 Cycle Proficiency Training for St Andrews Governors input,

safety awareness via assemblies, letters to parents,

liaison with LCC regarding traffic calming/safety measures such as road signage on local roads

The School has adopted the LEA’s guidelines on Road Safety Education.

The School has chosen to use ideas promoted through the ‘Road Safety Education in Schools Good Practice Guidelines’ produced by The Department of Transport.

The School actively promotes Road Safety issues through: ∗

the inclusion of Road Safety material in the Year 7 P.S.H.E. programme via LCC Road Show

the inclusion of Road Safety material in other areas of the curriculum, 1 Science via speed awareness module in Key stage 4 2 English via instructional writing

the inclusion of reminders about Blackpool Road in letters to Parents and reminders relating the bicycle safety issues

reminders to students in Assembly and Form Periods about road safety issues.

The School supports the ‘Together We Can Make A Difference’ road safety strategy and has agreed School objectives.    

actively encourage the pledged support of all staff and governing body include Road Safety issues in the curriculum promote Road Safety issues via Assemblies and Form Periods promote Road Safety issues via the termly News sheet.
