Before Half-term a very brave group of Year Six children went to speak at the Public Hearing for the proposed extension to the Whitemoss Landfill site. The pupils felt passionately about this subject and were given the incredible opportunity to actively engage in the political process. They spoke on behalf of the school community and a copy of the speech is below for you to read. They were incredible ambassadors, not just for the school but for the entire youth of Skelmersdale and we should be proud of them! Hello, We are here representing the children of Bishop Martin. We are opposed to the Whitemoss Landfill extension proposal as we believe we should all have a safe future. We are very proud to have been brought up by our parents and our school not to litter; to protect animals and to look after our environment, but then you are proposing to dump this hazardous waste on our doorsteps. Surely this is not protecting the children, adults and animals in Skelmersdale? I’m sure you are aware that a lot of sporting events take place around that area. Some of us play football near there each week. Would these need to be cancelled? Would it be safe for us? Is this promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst young people? What gives someone the right to endanger the lives of the people living in Skelmersdale? I want the local area that my family and friends live in to be as safe and healthy as possible for generations to come. If this goes ahead it will destroy Skelmersdale. We urge you – help keep Skelmersdale green! Thank you for listening.

Petition against Closing Glenburn Lancashire County Council is in consultation with Glenburn Sports College to close the school. As it is the only High school within Skelmersdale New Town, parents of Glenburn have got together to fight against closure. If you would like to sign a petition please call in to our school office to sign the paper copy.
