Year 3 (Athletics) PE Sports Curriculum 6 weeks

Learning Objective: To understand the difference between jogging and running.

Introduction to the activity: Recap on knowledge about Athletics. Children put hand on heart and measure heart-rate, do they know where to measure your heart-rate.

Tasks Ask children to walk in and around the area moving in and out of everyone.

They must touch the cones to see how many cones they touch before the whistle goes.

On coaches command children must walk, jog, walk without touching any cones or people in their area. Observe technique make sure children are walking and jogging in a correct style.

Progression: 1 Athletics Warm Up; Three groups playing the gears game and traffic lights game within their areas that are marked out.

Teaching Points

Success Criteria

Be able to adapt and adjust moving in and around the cones.

When children walk their heels are grounded first

Make sure that elbows are in when running.

Posture and head is held high

Ask children to walk a cone of their choice and then jog back. Continue until teacher stops the group gives children one minute to see how many cones they can get with breaking sweat.

Set-up a running area, children walk to first jog to second, walk to third, jog to fourth.

Challenge: Children to get back in no less than 30 seconds.

Knees are High and hands and fingers are in a circle shape.

Learning Objective: To be able to jump over a hurdle using a correct technique.

Introduction to the activity. Recap on knowledge about Athletics and what was covered last week.

Progression: 2 Athletics Warm Up: Foxes tails, select two or more people is the foxes and they have to catch the hares, if tail is pulled you become a hare.

Make sure you see: Deep Breathing Red Cheeks Feeling a little sweaty

Split the team into groups. Let the participants have a go at clearing the hurdle in the teams. Observe to see who needs support and who doesn’t.

In teams look at the start position, run and spring over the hurdles and run back. When that is done and finished make sure you have a champion team.

Differentiation: Can you get back inside 20 Seconds, if this happens lower the times to 15, 10 seconds.

Learning Objective: To be able to pass the relay baton using the correct technique.

Progression: 3 Athletics Warm Up: Run around in various directions game is ‘OPPOSITIES’ When coach says ‘header’ touch the floor, ‘DOWN’ go up for the header.

Introduction to the activity: Make sure everyone understand what the baton relay is. Go through any rules or boundaries.

Tasks Ask children to walk in and around the area moving in and out of everyone.

Having cones on the floor scattered around the area and time children to see how many cones they can touch.

Split the team into groups Let the participants have a go at clearing the hurdle in the teams. Observe to see who needs support and who doesn’t.

In teams look at the start position, run and spring over the hurdles and run back. When that is done and finished make sure you have a champion team.

CHALLENGE: Can you get back inside 20 Seconds, if this happens lower the times to 15,10 seconds.

Cool down tasks Gears and debrief the group - make sure that heart-rate is brought down to a good level.

Learning Objective; Understand how to throw a javelin using the correct technique Able to throw a javelin into space set out.

Progression: 4 Athletics Warm Up: Throwing and Catching Individuals get into Groups of five only when coaches say, side stepping throwing the ball to and from other participants in a circle. Saying their name and anything they know about athletics and to get the players cognitively and get a feel to how to through the ball.

Introduction to the activity: Recap on what has been covered in previous weeks and what till be covered in today’s lesson.

100 METRE RUN: Children practice sessions of 100 meters using the technique that has been learnt.

HURDLES. Track is set out over Children can run over hurdles at speed. In partners, partner A or partner B. Go first and make sure they arrive back for the next Partner to go.
