Year 1 ATHLETICS PE Sports Curriculum 6 weeks

Class: Year 1 PROGRESSION 1 Topic: Athletics

Learning Objective: To explore different travelling actions.

To develop the underarm throw.

Warm Up. Children move around the playground/hall walking jogging and sprinting. Listen to teachers command of FREEZE (Stop) and Go (Go). Also incorporate static and dynamic stretches.

Introduction to the activity.

Discuss the learning objective with the children.

Success Criteria

Ask the children to walk avoiding others (TOP Athletics Walk and Jogging Activity 1).

Ask the children to jog around the area avoiding others.

Set up the running area and groups.

Ask the children to experiment with different arm and leg actions whilst walking / jogging i.e. straight arms, high knees, straight legs (teachers can choose or let children explore).

Ask the children which way of running was difficult or easy? Why? Add the hoops and bean bags to the running area.

Teach the children how to throw underarm. Ask the children to practice throwing into the target, collect bean bag and return.

Ask the children to throw the bean bag into the target, walk/jog and collect the bean bag run on and round a cone and back in a relay type race.

Cool down tasks

Ensure heel of one foot and toe of the other are grounded when walking.

Head up, eyes looking forward.

E.g. I want you to try and walk/jog to the cone with straight arms.

Which way of jogging was the hardest?

Why? Opposite foot forward from throwing arm.

Remind children it is not a race but looking at accuracy and good walking/ jogging.

Children work towards a Heel - toe walking action.

Children can walk/jog with no contact.

Children can perform walk/jogging technique.

Children understanding why arms are important when walk/jogging.

Learning Objective: To run quickly with greater control and coordination.

Warm Up. Children are instructed to move around the hall running, jogging and sprinting.

Inside the area each of the corners of the hall/playground are labeled with a name e.g. North, South, East and West. On the call of the teacher pupils must get to the called corner as fast as possible. Last one to make it to the corner loses a life. Pupils then move around the hall/playground with a ball keeping control of it at all times.

Ask children to jog/run around the area avoiding others. (Use different pathways i.e. curved, zig zag).

On command SPRINT. How many times can you run on the spot in fifteen seconds? Repeat a few times.

Set up the running area (see diagram 1).

Ask the children to experiment with different arm and leg actions whilst running quickly i.e. straight arms, high knees and straight legs.

Ask the children which way of running quickly was difficult? Why? Reinforce correct technique for running quickly (use a child who can show good running technique).

Ask the children to run across the area as quickly as they can (approx 20M).

Focused observation - ask the children to comment on how well they ran.

Set up the next activity.

• Children in groups of three or four rotate around the three events • How many cones can you touch in thirty seconds?

• How quickly can you move five bean bags from one hoop to another?

• How many bean bags can you get into the target?

Cool down tasks

Run using different paths, can you run on a curved path way.

Children running along different pathways safely.

Use arms to help legs go quicker.

Children using arms to help sprint on spot.

(i.e. run as quickly as you can with your arms by your side, run as quickly as you can with straight legs)

Children understand how using arms and legs in different ways can help or hinder running.

Learning Objective: To explore ways of rolling and throwing a bean bag/ball with control and co-ordination.

Warm Up. Opposite Game. STOP means Go, Go means STOP. DOWN means UP, Up means DOWN

Teach the children to roll the ball to a partner who is sat down in straddle.

Use both left and right hands.

Children can roll a ball with both hands.

Ask the children to roll the ball to their partner, who then rolls it back to their partner who has now sat in straddle.

How far apart can you get and still hit the target?

Children can roll accurately with control.

Teach the children to throw with two hands overarm while in straddle.

Ask the children to roll the ball to partner in straddle, who then throws it back over arm, after a number of turns change roles.

Focused observation - use children's examples and ask children to identify the rolling and over arm throwing actions. Discuss how successful they were and what the children might work on to improve.

Set up the following activities.

• Can you throw (using underarm throw) further than you can run in three seconds • Rolling at a target/targets • How many cones can you touch in thirty seconds?

• How quickly can you move five bean bags from one hoop to another?

Cool down tasks

Children can throw a ball back overarm with two hands accurately.

Using success criteria of Two stars (positive) and a wish.

Children can comment on their performance when throwing.

Children to work at each activity and then move round on teachers command.

Learning Objective: To explore ways of jumping.

To choose skills to help them meet challenges set.

Warm Up. A number of hoops are set out around the hall/playground. Children play a modified game of tag whereby if children are stood in a hoop he/she cannot be tug. Change the people who are on every couple of minutes.

Discuss the learning objective with the children.

Set up the area. Put children into groups.

Ask the children to skip (20m for N.U award) to other side of area and back.

Ask the children to skip to the three hoops then jump in and out of the three circles (N.U award) walk/jog back.

Teach the children the bounding stride (N.U Award).

Ask children to practice bounding for five strides, walk / jog back.

Set up the following activities: • Pull throw for distance • Skip 20m • Five Bounding strides • Run continuously for one min.

Set up area so it is safe and children are in appropriate groups.
