Cliff Sharp

Biology Course Leader After working on a research station on the Great Barrier Reef and teaching at Meols Cop, Cliff joined KGV in 1992.

Since then he has become a senior examiner and was awarded a fellowship of the Society of Biology for his services to biology education.

“Biology is really interesting as you get to learn about the science of things you see all around you Plus, I’ve always found the human body fascinating so being able to get a more detailed look at how everything works is a lot of fun. The module we covered on genetics was particularly interesting and a geneticist came into college to give an in depth talk on their work in genetic counselling during Biology week.

It was cool to see the practical applications of what we had learnt.”

KGV is the place to study Biology. We are the largest single entry subject in College and we have a proud history of providing excellent teaching and results.

HOW THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED

Students will study At AS Level: • Cell structure and function • Biochemistry • Animal and plant physiology including adaptations to different environments.

• The circulatory system

GET INVOLVED, BE A PART OF IT

Some of the enrichment activities last year: Over 40 Biology Students attended the DNA Conference at Wrexham University.

The Christmas lecture was delivered by Chris Hurley of the NW Reptile Club. Chris brought in a range of snakes and lizards for the students to look at and handle.

Dr Andy Bates (University of Liverpool) gave the national Biology Week talk on the Trouble With The DNA Helix.

Over 30 AS and A2 Biology students attended the Bodies Revealed exhibition in Liverpool.

As part of the National Science and Engineering Week, Dr Elies Alias and Dr Celia Murray-Dunning, University of Liverpool delivered a workshop on Biomaterials and Implants.

A2 Biology students visited Chester Zoo to learn about biodiversity, conservation and evolution.

The KGV Biology Quiz Team came SECOND at the Society of Biology Schools Quiz at the University of Central Lancashire.

AS Biology students attended a trip to the British Natural History Museum in London. They looked at the collection and also visited the “Extinction” exhibition.
