Burrowmoor Primary School Behaviour Policy At Burrowmoor Primary School we believe that good behaviour supports good learning which in turn leads to children developing socially, emotionally and academically. We understand that we all learn best when we are clear about what it is that we are supposed to do, and when we are constantly encouraged to do it correctly. We believe that all our children should develop into STARS! What are stars?

At Burrowmoor Primary School we feel that good behaviour means that everyone in school can be:  SELF-MOTIVATED  TEAM WORKERS  ACTIVE LEARNERS  RESPECTFUL  SAFE We want to encourage this behaviour in every area of school life e.g. entering and leaving the school, in the cloakrooms, at lunchtimes, in the playground, as well as inside the classroom.

Benefits of Good Behaviour By encouraging good behaviour we know we will be supporting the ethos at Burrowmoor; one that aims to foster in them a love of learning and an understanding and respect for the world in which they live.

As teachers we aim to meet the needs of all pupils’ and good behaviour helps to facilitate this - enabling us to teach effectively with few behaviour problems.

We believe this allows for an uncluttered learning climate in which all children are free to realise their potential.

How we Encourage Good Behaviour At Burrowmoor we want our children to feel that they have a personal investment in the running of the school. This in itself helps to promote good behaviour and we feel that to promote it further children need: · To know what they are required to do · To have goals to aim towards · To be praised, supported and encouraged constantly and effectively · To have clear expectations about their work and behaviour. · To take responsibility and be involved in decision making. · To have a strong pupil voice which is listened to and responded to.

As adults we: · Recognise and reward positive behaviour as it occurs. · Explain and role model the behaviour we wish to see. · Encourage children to be responsible for their own behaviour. · Let parents/ carers know about their child’s good behaviour. · Work in partnership with parents when behaviour needs to be improved.

All the time we believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to achieve good behaviour and we have several systems set up in school to accomplish this, that link with STARS! All children are helped to recognise examples of good behaviour at all times and we feel it is important for children to be involved in decision making that is going to affect them. We understand that this helps them to become more responsible for their own actions.

How we deal with Unwanted Behaviour When children are spoken to about a behaviour that is either negatively impacting on their own or others learning; is disrespectful; or is unsafe to themselves or others then the following procedure may apply (some significant behaviours may need dealing with through the school’s positive handling policy, a child’s individual risk reduction plan or an IEPs).

1. Warn the child. State this is their warning and what will happen next 2. If the child persists in the unwanted behaviour, then take 5 minutes of break time or Golden Time (whichever the teacher feels is appropriate).

3. If it still continues, then take another 5 minutes, a maximum of 10 minutes in total per session/lesson.

4. If the unwanted behaviours still continues and if it is felt necessary by the classroom teacher that the child needs to be given time to think about their negative behaviour, then they can be asked to work in a different space or until the teacher is able to speak to them, or feels that it is time they return to their normal working area in the classroom.

5. If a teacher feels that a child is not responding to them, then the child should be sent to the unit leader or the unit leader sent for if the child will not leave the room.

6. If this behaviour still does not change then they will be informed by the teacher that they will speak to their parents as they have chosen to not change their behaviour.

The child will be given every opportunity to earn back the missed time by displaying positive behaviour and following the classroom rules. This will show them that good behaviour is rewarded.

All poor behaviour within the classroom must be logged. Poor behaviour at playtimes and lunchtimes is evidenced in Break / Lunchtime Log for evidence and records. These are reviewed termly/half termly at unit meetings and patterns of behaviour are shared with SLT. Individual programs and contracts are sometimes organised to help those pupils who find it more difficult to meet our STARS expectations, these may include individual reward charts that records child’s progress to a particular target or a token system to work towards the individual target. Child can then

exchange tokens for a reward. The Head and/or SENCo take responsibility for monitoring these Occasionally we recognise that children need to de-escalate before their conduct and behaviour can be discussed. This discussion is essential, in order for the behaviour to be accepted and understood by the child so they can then be helped with strategies in order for it to be modified. Sometimes it is more beneficial to the child for this calm, de-escalation time to occur away from their peers either within school or at home after the school ay and in these instances we aim to work in partnership with parents and carers to facilitate this. Internal exclusions are used in partnership with the SENCO and SLT to support challenging behaviour at play and lunch times as well as lesson times. An internal Active Learning Trust exclusions will be used when ever possible prior to external exclusion. Through our partnership with paents and the Neale Wade Academy, a child may be required to attend Neale Wade school for a fixed period of time where they will be taught by Burrowmoor School staff on an internal exclusion.

Our Reward Schemes Burrowmoor Certificates – to celebrate hard work and effort the children will be able to collect stickers and/or stamps. Certificates are presented for multiples of 10 during Friday sharing assembly, to which parents are invited. .

The children will then start collecting stickers/stamps towards the next award certificate. Reasons for giving out stickers and stamps should be to reinforce positive behaviour, effort and general good work. Under no circumstances are stickers or any reward taken away for a negative act of behaviour.

STARS Stickers/Awards - During whole school assembly, children will be awarded STARS stickers. The recipients of these stickers/awards will have been nominated by their class teacher (one or two children per class will receive an award). These children are nominated as demonstrating outstanding contributions/examples of STARS. Golden Time is used within the classroom for rewarding good behaviour and is usually held for the last 30 minutes of the day on a Friday. All children start the week on 30 minutes with an aim to keep it.
