Why should gunpowder, treason and plot never be forgotten?
This half-term, we will be focussing on the stages of living things, both humans and animals. We will also be looking at life expectancies and how we learn certain skills when we are babies that we don’t even think about when we are older. We will also be looking at genetics and how our genes determine what type of person we are.
To coincide with Bonfire Night, we will be looking at firework displays and transferring our ideas into a piece of artwork, using pastels. We will be investigating the use of colour and using techniques such as blending.
This half term, we will be focussing on fractions, decimals and percentages. We will be learning to order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the sane number and we will be learning to recognise and convert mixed number fractions and improper fractions. We will also be able to add decimals and fractions, and be able to multiply mixed number fractions. Our times table mental maths focus will continue up to 12x12. We will also be concentrating on investigating and learning about prime, squared and cubed numbers and being able to recall some of these numbers.
After our introduction to classical music through ‘The Planets’, this term we will be focussing on orchestral music from the classical period (1750-1820), focussing on composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. We will be listening to and learning to appreciate and analyse works across the period. To tie in with our work in music, we will be designing and creating our own musical instruments. We will research, make and evaluate our products; we will learn how to search for the correct information and how to choose the best materials for our prototypes.
To tie in with Bonfire Night, our topic will be looking at Stuart England. We will discuss why the Gunpowder Plot took place and why religion was a major factor to the plot. We will also be learning about the English Civil War and how the outcomes of this impacted on our country’s history and traditions even today. We will also investigate the Great Fire of London and learn about Samuel Pepys; was he a historical ‘blogger’?. This half term, we will learn how the gift of the Ten Commandments from God can shape our lives today, even though they were first given to Moses thousands of years ago. We will also look at how Jesus told us to use the Ten Commandments and how we can show our love for God. We will also learn to understand that God sent Jesus into the world because of his eternal love for all of us.
In English, 5L will be covering a range of topics, including; empathy with the historical figures in the Gunpowder Plot, looking into poems telling us about life on the front during Remembrance Week commemorating the centenary of WWI.. To continue with this theme of poetry, we will be looking at ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes and looking into the story behind it and discussing our personal opinions about the poem, it’s characters and the story it tells us. We will also be continuing our spelling, punctuation and grammar work in our weekly Monday sessions, as well as our Guided Reading sessions. We will also be finishing our class novel; ‘Millions’ by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. In Computing, we will start to begin to understand computer networking and how it works on a local and international scale; looking at networks as big as the Internet. We will also be looking at how emails work and how websites take their own journey to our computer screens. We will also be learning about blogs and wikis and learning to understand how these can be edited. 5L will also be studying Drama this term with Mr Armstrong; we will be looking at how the English Civil War began and how religion was a major influence in it starting. We will also be continuing our French work with Madame Flores on Thursdays.
In P.E., 5L will be revisiting their Hockey skills this half term. The children will be looking at the rules of the game as well as covering skills such as attacking and defending. They will also be continuing to look at floor work in gymnastics; they will create a variety of fluid sequences of movement, whilst learning to control body movements and tension.
