As well as weekly spelling, grammar and handwriting lessons, this term 3D will be focusing on poetry in correlation to Bonfire Night and the history of Guy Fawkes. The children will prepare poems to read aloud and perform showing understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action. During the week of remembrance for the Centenary of World War I, we will be focusing our English on diary writing, looking at the features and writing about life as a soldier in WWI. For the remainder of the term we will be studying Myths and Legends, using visual texts as a stimulus. The children will plan their own myth, during this time the children will discuss writing similarly to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar.

Our topic on the Romans provides opportunities for the children to draw, paint and create various Roman artefacts. To achieve this, the children will have the opportunity to use sketchbooks to collect, record and evaluate ideas. They will improve their skills in drawing, painting and sculpture, using various materials. 3D will also have the opportunity to learn about great artists, architects and designers.

Number- during this term the children will be recalling their multiplication and division facts for all multiplication tables up to 12. All children will be learning to rapidly recall a variety of number bonds. To find the effect of multiplying and dividing two digit numbers by 10 and 100. They will also be multiplying two and three digit numbers by a one digit number using a formal written method. Measurement – 3D will be solving problems involving converting between different units of measure, for example km to m, g and kg. To measure and calculate the perimeter of regular 2D shapes in cm and m. Geometry – the children will draw 2D shapes and make 3D shapes, they will learn how to recognise the shapes in different orientations and describe them. The children will also compare and classify shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles based on their properties and sizes. We will also describe positions on a 2 – D grid as coordinates.

Challenge - Why were the Romans so powerful and what did we learn from them? This half term we will be focusing our learning on explaining how events from the past have helped shape our lives today. To appreciate how items found belonging to the past help us to build up an accurate picture of how people lived in the Roman times. To research what it was like for the Romans and photographs and illustrations to present their findings.

In 3D children will learn to use their voice and instruments with increasing accuracy, control and expression. We will improvise and compose music associated with water. Pupils will listen with attention to detail with the sounds of the different musical instruments, they will use and understand musical notation. Throughout this subject the children will develop an understanding of musical history.

As part of our Religion we follow The Way, The Truth and The Light. During this half term 3D’s topic will be Mary, Mother of God. 3D will learn that God chose Mary to be the mother of His Son, and think about the importance of being chosen. They will understand that Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and relate thyis to how we can help one another. We will then learn about the mystery of Incarnation and reflect on these mysteries. Furthermore, during the lead up to Christmas we will learn about Advent, and how it is a time to prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We will be asking ourselves how we can prepare. Finally, we will reflect on what the Nativity story means to us. 3D will also be taking part in the Sacramental Programme, in which they will go through their religious journey of receiving their Holy Communion.

During 3D’s weekly Spanish lessons the children will be listening and responding in Spanish, they will be exploring the language through stories, songs, poems and rhymes. Challenge – How could we cope without electricity for one day? The children will identify common appliances that run on electricity, they will construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. During our lessons we will identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery. In 3D we will recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit. To recognise some common conductors and insulators. Computing will be involved largely throughout the curriculum and our current topic. The children will have the opportunity to design, write and debug programs. Pupils will use sequence, selection and repetition through programs. They will use search technologies effectively to research about the Romans around the world. All children will be taught the importance of how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

During 3D’s PE lessons in the Autumn term the children will be learning skills in relation to Hockey . During Hockey they will be learning how to pass, dribble and shoot with control during games. Additionally they will develop their ability to play effectively as part of a team. Furthermore, throughout hockey lessons 3D will identify and use tactics to help the team keep the ball and advance it. Finally, they will pick out parts of performance that could be improved, and suggest ideas and practices to make them better. 3D’s theme within PSHE is Health and Wellbeing, this topic provides children the opportunity to reflect on and celebrate their achievements and deepen their understanding of good and not so good feelings. They will be expected to extend their vocabulary to enable them to explain both the range and intensity of their feelings to others and to recognise that they may experience conflicting emotions. This half term coincides with the annual Anti-Bullying week which will be celebrated in school.

The children will also be doing gymnastics as part of their indoor sessions for PE, 3D will be demonstrating balances using their body, they will be expected to use appropriate vocabulary to describe what they or others are doing. Pupils will need to show a variety of controlled turning jumps. By the end of the term they should be able to plan, practice and perform a short sequence showing balances, twists, turns, jumps and rolls.

During this half term the children will be directing their learning through the subjects History and Science. We will be learning the way the Romans lived and their influence on Britain today.
