Welcome to our Annual Report for 2014 in which we describe some of the outstanding activities and achievements of our students, staff and alumni over the last year. You will see that our pass rates continue to improve but (as our mission statement makes clear) the college’s role also extends out into the global community as we prepare our students for life. Our contribution to local academic achievement is not kept within the college. We are a lead member of the Fylde Coast Teaching School which has now provided over 1000 development courses for teachers in schools across the Fylde and which will soon be delivering its own Qualified Teacher Status qualification. The Fylde Coast Academy Trust is sponsoring the new Unity Academy which, whilst only in its first year, has seen rapid improvements. Our commitment to our community is clear.
Introduction
Chair of Governors’ Introduction
John Boyle JP CAifs DipPFS NLG Chair of Governors
Principal’s Message A key change for us this year has been the disappearance of the January module exams due to national changes in the A level examination system. Our full scale mock examination programme in February ensured that both our first and second year students got a flavour of the rigours of the new examination system. Staff took time to cross mark and quality assure each other’s students ensuring our early trials were as close to final results as possible. The large number of staff who take part-time work as examiners were particularly helpful to their less experienced colleagues. A key theme in this publication is how we deliver on the words of our mission statement to “develop mind and character”. Our students benefit from a wealth of opportunities for personal development. This takes their learning far beyond the classroom: to workplaces, to foreign countries and, crucially, out into our local communities. We know that our students value this dimension of their time at Blackpool Sixth and former students often come back to tell us what a difference the sixth form made to their aspirations through broadening their horizons. Next year we are looking to expand the amount of time our students spend on enrichment activities such as sports, cultural activities, volunteering and work experience. The loss of January modules gives some time back to this area of work.

Inspiring learning...
Over three nights in March, Performing Arts students put on an extremely well-received production of the musical “Sweet Charity”. The musical relates the trials and tribulations of luckless “taxi dancer” Charity. The title role was played by Megan Barnes who has gained a place at one of the top musical theatre schools in the country, Performers College in Essex. 2013-14 was yet another very successful year for musical concerts. As well as the ever popular Autumn music concert, a particular highlight was the White Church concert in Lytham in March. The audience were treated to solo and choral performances of an extremely high standard.

Inspiring learning... (Above Left) In April 2014, students from our Business and Economics courses visited New York city and took part in a range of subject related activities. They met former Blackpool Sixth student, Joseph Lovell, who now works as an investment banker. The visit also included a special tour of the United Nations and the financial district of the city. (Above Right) Students and staff from the department of English and Modern Foreign languages marked the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare on 23rd April. An imaginative programme of activities included a lecture on the continuing relevance of Shakespeare’s works, an Elizabethan style lunch as well as musical and dramatic performances. A special cake was made for the event and Dan Smith, who played the role of Shakespeare for the day, is pictured with Blackpool’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr David Owen. (Right) Blackpool Sixth hosted the first round of the English Speaking Union, North West region debating competition in November. Six teams from across the North West gathered to compete in this prestigious competition. The Blackpool Sixth team comprised Rachel Wood and Sabine Dunstan. The judges, from Manchester University Debating Society, praised them for their persistence in keeping to the motion they were proposing and their incisive points of information.
7
(Left) Students from the department of Social Sciences went to the capital to participate in a range of activities related to their studies in Psychology and Sociology. This included a lecture on sleep disorders and a visit to the Old Bailey to learn more about the criminal justice system. They also took part in a night-time tour of sites associated with the Victorian criminal, Jack the Ripper and attended a production of “Billy Elliot: The Musical” which explores many sociological themes. (Above right) There were highlights, as ever, on the visit to Berlin by the A Level German students. It was an exciting cultural experience with a visit to Brecht’s theatre, the Berliner Ensemble, to see ‘The Threepenny Opera’ and a visit for some to the world famous Berlin Philharmonic. The Christmas markets were a great hit with exciting shopping and plenty of delicious German currywurst, glühwein and doughnuts! Ryan Jones commented, “During our time in Berlin, we had the opportunity to visit many incredible places, including the Reichstag, the Christmas Markets, the Brandenburg gate and even the Berliner Ensemble. The atmosphere was very Christmassy! My favourite part was definitely the trip to see Brecht’s Threepenny Opera.”

Inspiring learning... (Above) Blackpool Sixth engineering students scooped top honours at the annual Rotary BAE Systems Technology Tournament hosted at the YMCA in St Annes in March. Over 250 students from Fylde Coast schools took part in challenges to test their engineering prowess. Blackpool Sixth had a contingent of 20 in five teams all drawn from the college’s BTEC Engineering course. Two of the sixth form teams took first and second position in their age category. (Below left) This year has been an outstanding year for the Blackpool Sixth Maths Department. A number of students competed in the Senior Maths Challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust, gaining a total of 71 individual awards! The individual heats were held at the sixth form. There was a further group challenge which was held at Lancaster University involving 21 of the top schools from across the country. The Blackpool Sixth team comprised: Connor Heelis, James Faulkner, Chloe Rice and Lara Pownall. The team finished in a respectable 14th place.

(Right) Daniel Taylor an actor, singer and songwriter called in during October to give a talk to a packed drama studio about his career and his advice for aspiring young performers. Daniel has played the role of Sammy in the hit musical Blood Brothers on the West End and in many touring productions in recent years. Students from our BTEC Performing Arts and A level Drama and Theatre studies courses greatly benefited from the actor’s insights. (Above) First year BTEC Dance students received an exciting visit from two professional international dancers. The dancers, from Spain and Germany, came into college to deliver a workshop based around their current show, “Nobulus”, which was performed at the Grand Theatre in Blackpool. The workshop leaders, Alex and Felix, are contemporary break-dancers and the students were eager to learn new material from a professional repertoire. Dance student, Ryan Woods commented, “The workshop was really worthwhile. It was refreshing to be taught by two male dancers from outside of the UK.”

Inspiring learning... The Department of Visual Arts, as well as achieving results which put them in the top 10% in the country, also provide brilliant opportunities for students to exhibit their work in a variety of public settings, gaining both local and national recognition. (Above left) In March, Becca Liversidge was one of only 20 young artists chosen to have their work displayed in the House of Commons. Her work featured in the Association of Colleges exhibition which was attended by the secretary of state for education and many MPs, including all the Fylde coast MPs. (Above right) Students from the BTEC Art and Design course were part of an innovative collaboration with Blackpool Victoria Hospital this year. They produced artwork to brighten the walls of the new neonatal unit at the hospital. (Left) During the Easter holidays, a group of Classical Civilisation students enjoyed a memorable visit to Athens to gain first hand knowledge of some of the key sites in ancient Greek history. The field-trip included expertly guided visits to the Acropolis and to the oracle at Delphi.
11
Developing Mind & Character... A key part of our mission is to enable our students to grow into confident and capable young people. We help them develop into active and engaged citizens who know how to support their peers and contribute to their community.

(Above left) High-flying student David Whitaker has gone to remarkable lengths to help prepare himself for his dream career as a commercial airline pilot. As well as taking flying lessons at Blackpool Airport, the first year student has used skills acquired in his A level Electronics and Computing courses to construct a simulation Boeing 737 cockpit at home. (Above right) Second year BTEC Public Services student, Hannah Shaw gained a place on the highly sought after police cadet programme with Lancashire Constabulary in Preston. She attends training every Wednesday evening and has acquired a basic knowledge of a variety of policing activities and the law, gaining an insight into road traffic collisions, first aid, officer safety, conflict management, as well as caution and stop and search powers. She has also taken part in teambuilding weekends. (Left) Second year performing arts and music students took part in a coffee morning in January with several senior residents of Blackpool. The meeting was part of an exciting new project in conjunction with Rock FM. This project involved students creating a piece of music and drama for radio on the theme of “Visions of Blackpool.
14
Developing mind and character... The college held a “Charity Hero” day in December with students and staff dressing up as superheroes. Over £500 was raised for the charity whose work supports the 25,000 or so people who are diagnosed with a blood cancer each year in the UK. Another even more important aim of the day was to recruit potential bone marrow and blood stem cell donors. 81 students signed up to the donor register which the charity representatives described as a “fantastic” effort.
15
(Left) Charlotte Hartley, a Great British Commonwealth medallist, visited Blackpool Sixth to help coach the hockey team. Charlotte ran some coaching drills before delivering a lecture on the highs and lows of competing at a top level. All the students commented how motivational it was to hear from such a distinguished athlete. (Above) This year’s basketball squad were doing their part for charity this year with an impressive ‘10,000 hoops’ challenge. The challenge started at 8:45am and ran until the target was met, impressively this took only six and half hours! Members of staff and students contributed with some ‘hoops’ but also financially to the good cause. The money raised was donated to the Cash for Kids Mission Christmas Appeal.

Rising golf star, Jack Clarkson, was on top form in an international schools’ golf match in October, playing for the England national team against Scotland. The 17 year old from Hambleton won his match 3&2 against a Scottish opponent at West Kilbride golf course.
Blackpool Sixth student, Eddy Greaves, is making a big impression in the challenging world of international taekwondo. He has represented England since the age of 12 and now has his sights on competing for Team GB at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Eddy won a bronze medal at the 2013 Scottish Open taekwondo event. He has also won many medals from smaller regional competitions. Alongside his taekwondo training, he also teaches the sport once a week.
Lewis Gardner, will be heading to the university of West Virginia to combine his flourishing football career with a degree in Business and Marketing. Not only has Lewis been offered the chance to study at university whilst training, he has also secured a scholarship worth up to $21,000 a year for each of the four years he will be with the university. The scholarship covers his academic fees and his soccer training.
Daniel Milton currently plays for the Blackpool Football Club Youth team but last October saw him called up for the Canadian national team for the 2014 U-17’s World Cup. Daniel had to balance his studies whilst jetting off to international training camps in warmer climates such as Florida and Guatemala. Daniel then travelled to the United Arab Emirates as a Goalkeeper for the Canadian national squad.

(Above) The 2013/14 season was an exceptional one for the Blackpool Football Club Youth Team. The team, who studied BTEC Sport (Performance & Excellence) at Blackpool Sixth, claimed the North West league title in April 2014. The squad also made it to the Lancashire FA Youth Cup final, which was a closely contested game. The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and, unfortunately ended in Blackpool narrowly losing out 4-3 on penalties. Joe Moulden, Youth Team Captain, commented, “It has been a great season and we didn’t expect to do so well originally, but we have improved so much as a team over the season. We have a great group here and it was amazing to win the league this year.” (Left) Blackpool Sixth also provide qualifications to the Fleetwood Town Youth team. As part of their qualifications they are required to demonstrate their coaching ability. The squad have been working with other Blackpool Sixth sports teams as well as being involved community coaching projects. In October 2013 some members of the team were involved in a football coaching session for students from Cardinal Allen Catholic High School, which was an event enjoyed by all who took part.

Developing mind and character...
Six students from Blackpool Sixth Form College were chosen in November to be founder members of an exciting new dance project on the Fylde Coast. The six, all currently studying either A level or BTEC dance at Blackpool Sixth, successfully auditioned for the Fylde Coast Youth Dance company.
(Left) Blackpool Sixth partnered with the Palatine Rotary Club for a tenth consecutive year to run the ever popular International Evening. The evening was a fun-filled night with student presentations, music and food tasting. It began with a musical welcome from student, Laura Lagzda who sang a Latvian folk-song. There were presentations from students from Spain and Germany about their countries and their experiences of living in the UK. The annual Memorial Lecture at the Blackpool Sixth Form College focused on the impact of one of the world’s most feared diseases, polio. The lecture was given by Dr Vasudev from the Palatine Rotary Club to a packed theatre of students, staff and invited guests. Blackpool Sixth students as well as a large group of students from Collegiate High School learnt about the impact the disease has had across the globe and how, though eradicated in many parts of the world, it still poses a threat to health in a number of developing countries.

(Above) On Saturday 16th November Blackpool Sixth hosted a glittering evening of Diwali celebrations. The event organised by the Fylde Coast Hindu Society was attended by over 250 guests, including the Mayor of Blackpool. The centrepiece of the evening was a show featuring dance performances by members of the Hindu Society and the acclaimed Indian classical dancer, Dr Swati Raut. Students from Blackpool Sixth’s BTEC Musical Theatre course also performed a number from “Hairspray” and senior student, Megan Roe, assisted with the hosting. (Left) Sixth form staff came to the final day of term in an array of seasonal clothing, including plenty of Christmas knitwear. As a “forfeit” for their departure from their usual formal work clothes, they made donation to the street children’s charity, Kickstart Kenya, run by former Blackpool Sixth exam invigilator and former teacher, Sue Parkin. The result was a fundraising total of £196.85. The fundraising effort was co-ordinated by the Management Information Systems (MIS) and Examinations team.

Developing mind and character... (Above right) Abi Gillibrand has combined her studies with being the editor of Woodnote, a fanzine. The young music journalist and writer put together a special edition of the magazine in the Autumn to feature tributes to the band, the Charlatans, following the death of their drummer, Jon Brookes. (Left) Bet Hankey ‘snapped’ up the chance to get involved in some work experience at Fleetwood Town Football Club as a sports photographer. Bet took the initiative to contact the club herself and managed to secure regular work experience as an official photographer for the first team. Some of Bet’s snaps have been used for the club programme, website and the local paper. (Above left) A group of students studying Critical Thinking took part in a highly successful workshop, entitled “Discover your Voice”, was run by the English Speaking Union, an organisation which works in the UK and overseas to promote excellence in public speaking and debating.
21
Building your future... Our new buildings are the outward sign of our spirit of innovation. We are preparing our students for a rapidly changing world where they will face many challenges. Our work with local schools, businesses and community groups is a crucial aspect of our forward-looking approach.
22
Building your future...
A further phase of the campus development programme was completed in June. The ÂŁ1.6 million project created a three-storey building to replace the old Ribble block. On the ground floor is a centre for our popular and growing BTEC Engineering course, including excellent workshop facilities. The first and second floors house eight new classrooms. The building connects to the Calder block, ensuring ease of movement through the campus.

(Above right) In December of last year, 14 students travelled to the prestigious Bank of England in London. The students toured the museum as part of their Careers Academy, a nationwide scheme that supports the employability and skills building of 16-19 year olds. During the tour the students were able to find out about the history of currency in England and economic changes over recent decades. They had the chance to speak with staff about their careers working at the bank and what they thought the future held for the UK economy. The students then travelled to the Dominion Theatre for a ‘We Will Rock Your Future’ afternoon of motivational speakers. They will also have the chance to undertake a 3-6 week internship during the summer between the two years of the programme; all these different elements combine to really develop the students in preparation for the world of work. (Left) The prestigious Careers Academy Graduation was held at the Albert Hall, Manchester, in May 2014. Nine students made the trip where they met with all other graduates from across the country. The ceremony highlighted the outstanding effort required by all the students involved to successfully complete the two year course.
24
Building your future...
In the 2013/14 academic year over 450 students completed more than 25,000 hours of work experience and volunteering placements within the workplace. Blackpool Sixth is committed to working closely with the business community and we have connections with hundreds of employers across the Fylde Coast. As part of our commitment to working with local employers, we invite industry professionals in to talk to our students. This year we have had over 60 professionals pass on their knowledge and skills to our students.

Some 2014 Student Leavers (Below left) Megan Barnes, has gained a place at the Performers College, located in Essex. There were over 900 applicants the less than 90 places available this year at the prestigious institution which is well known as an excellent route into the professional world of West End musicals. The former Cardinal Allen Catholic High School student had an audition in January, which consisted of ballet, jazz dance and singing. Her audition was successful and she then progressed to the interview stage. Gemma Collins (Right) has won a place to study at Harvard University, one of the world renowned Ivy League institutions. The place comes with a financial support package worth over $60,000 US dollars a year. Gemma is one of only 34 Sutton Trust programme students in the UK who have now gained places at US universities under the early application deadline. (Below right) Kyle Fisher, Connor McCreedy, Merryn Holling have all been offered places on the three year BA (Hons) in Acting at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA). Fellow student, Molly Wright, also has a place on the Foundation Acting course. This is a remarkable achievement as ALRA only have 30 places on offer this year and receive around 1500 applications.
26
(Left) Sophie Richardson: After graduating from Blackpool Sixth, Sophie went on to study at Queen Mary, University of London. Now working as a Marketing Executive for WhatUni, Sophie helps students at schools, sixth forms and colleges plan their journey into higher education. (Below right) Liam Barber: Liam graduated from Blackpool Sixth in 2013 with a string of A*s. Liam’s dream was to progress to Manchester university to study Physics. With the impressive grades Liam achieved, he fulfilled his dream and is currently studying Physics at Manchester University and regularly receives lectures from Brian Cox.
