PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE We are a high-achieving sixth form, giving our students an excellent springboard to success.

We educate the whole student, providing all with excellent teaching and opportunities for growth and personal development. We are recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding sixth form.

Inspiring learning First Class facilities Blackpool Sixth boasts first class facilities and state-of-the-art, professional standard equipment in all areas including the latest Apple Mac computers.

Within the past four years we have opened a brand new 300 seat theatre, a visual arts centre, a completely refurbished sports hall and a centre for engineering. This followed the creation of new science laboratories and new classrooms throughout the campus.

There are also two large learning resource areas, social areas and a variety of dining options, including a Starbucks coffee shop.

Choice Blackpool Sixth offers an exceptionally wide range of courses. From Further Maths or Spanish to Travel and Tourism or Financial Studies, there is something for everyone.

Specialist teaching All our teaching staff are highly qualified specialists who are experts in teaching 16 to 19 year olds. They treat you as individuals and give you all the support you need to reach your full potential. Many of our staff are also examiners for their subjects and this helps them ensure that you are excellently prepared for your exams.

Outstanding learning resources We have two state of the art learning resources centres. These are always available to students for study purposes and even open in the college holidays. Our friendly learning resources team are on hand to help with assignments and research.

Developing mind and character Moving from high school to sixth form means new freedom and independence. We will develop your skills to manage your learning, plan your time and find your own solutions. This is an ideal preparation for university and the world of work. We always ensure that you are well supported in your studies and other aspects of your life in Blackpool Sixth.

You will have a personal tutor who will guide you through your first year and provide specialist advice when you need to select the next stage in your career.

Personal development We offer a huge range of over 50 enrichment activities including team and individual sports, an exciting outdoor pursuits programme and, for the adventurous, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award Scheme. There are bands, languages, photography, the Debating Society, community service and work experience options. There are opportunities to travel abroad on ski trips, music tours and projects in countries as diverse as Greece and the US. Whatever your interests, you will find our sixth form a friendly and fun environment. Your days here will provide you with great memories that will last a lifetime.

Our A level pass rate is consistently above the national average. Many of our students achieve a string of top level passes. Every year a number of students progress to Oxford and Cambridge and some 80% of students progress to university and other higher education courses. Strong pastoral care, support and guidance are extremely important in contributing to students’ success.

Your Personal Tutor will offer advice and guidance to help you settle in quickly and enjoy your time with us.

Regular individual reviews of progress are a key element of this support.

Your Personal Tutor will also help you to make the right decisions about career choices and applications for higher education or employment. Tutor groups are organised into departments, each of which is led by a Head of Department. If any issues arise or you need advice, both your Personal Tutor and your Head of Department are available to help you.

A range of additional support is available for any student requiring help with any learning or medical need.

Support at the Sixth Form How do we keep parents and carers informed?

In September, you will receive an invitation to a Parents’ Welcome Evening so that you can meet your son or daughter’s Personal Tutor and learn more about the courses they are studying.

Parents’ Consultation Evenings are held each year when parents and carers have the opportunity to meet with individual subject tutors. Progress review reports and attendance reports are sent to parents and carers regularly throughout the year. Parents and carers are welcome to contact their daughter or son’s Personal Tutor or Head of Department at any time.

The Personal Tutor or Head of Department will also get in touch whenever necessary and particularly if there is a concern about a student’s work, well-being, attendance or punctuality.

Parent Portal You will have password protected access to the Parent Portal which is an online tool giving you direct access to your daughter or son’s up-to-date attendance and progress data. We do value parental support for both the individual student and the sixth form as a whole. Your views are very important to us and do affect the way in which we support the students’ learning.

Financial support for you Save money on the cost of transport Blackpool Sixth recognises that the cost of transport is a major concern for some students and their families. We work with local transport providers to offer big travel savings for students living outside a three-mile radius of the college.

This scheme not only helps with transport costs to and from Blackpool Sixth but also provides unlimited travel throughout the day, including evenings and weekends.

Bus service to and from Freckleton, Warton, Lytham and St Annes For students living in the Fylde area, Blackpool Sixth provides its own affordable bus service to and from Freckleton, Warton, Lytham and St Annes and works with local transport providers to offer big travel savings for students.

Free Meal Bursary of up to £700 for those students meet the required criteria 3. Income-assessed Bursary of up to £700 for students who don’t meet the free meal criteria but whose household income is less than £16,190 4. Subsidised Transport for students who live more than three miles from college 5. Hardship Fund is an emergency fund for students who experience short-term financial hardship and are struggling to meet costs associated with college * These figures are based on financial support available to new students in 2014/15 and may change for new students in 2015/16.

Work experience In the 2013/14 academic year students undertook more than 25,000 hours of work experience.

We work with hundreds of employers across the Fylde Coast and surrounding areas who help our students enhance their employability skills.

Some of Bet’s snaps have been used for the club programme, website and the local paper. (middle) In December of last year, 14 students travelled to the Bank of England in London. The students toured the museum as part of their Careers Academy, a nationwide scheme that supports the employability and skills building of 16-19 year olds.

Employability Alongside academic studies it is important for students to build on their employability skills during their time at sixth form. We provide a range of guest speakers who will come and talk to students about the importance of interview skills, preparing for the world of work, life after college, and general advice and guidance. These industry experts also offer career-targeted workshops where students can learn more about a specific career or company.

Our employability programme also enables students to go on workplace tours, receive support with work experience and volunteering and the chance to attend careers and UCAS fairs within the sixth form. Our dedicated Futures Team are on hand for drop-ins all day, every day to offer advice on all options after sixth form, CV help, interview support, and advice on where and how to apply for part-time work.

A world of opportunities Enjoying the whole Blackpool Sixth experience.

As a student at Blackpool Sixth, you will have the opportunity to explore a whole world of opportunities.

Capital visit for Social Scientists Going Greek During the Easter holidays, a group of Classical Civilisation students enjoyed a memorable visit to Athens to gain first hand knowledge of some of the key sites in ancient Greek history. The field-trip included expertly guided visits to the Acropolis and to the oracle at Delphi.

Students from the department of Social Sciences went to the capital to participate in a range of activities related to their studies in Psychology and Sociology. This included a lecture on sleep disorders and a visit to the Old Bailey to learn more about the criminal justice system. They also took part in a night-time tour of sites associated with the Victorian criminal, Jack the Ripper and attended a production of “Billy Elliot: The Musical� which explores many sociological themes.

Sweet Charity Over three nights in March, Performing Arts students put on an extremely well-received production of the musical “Sweet Charity”. The musical relates the trials and tribulations of luckless “taxi dancer” Charity. The title role was played

by Megan Barnes who has gained a place at one of the top musical theatre schools in the country, Performers College in Essex.

Training with Team GB star Charlotte Hartley, a Great British Commonwealth and Olympic medallist, visited Blackpool Sixth to help coach the hockey team. Charlotte ran some coaching drills before delivering a lecture on the highs and lows of competing at the top level. All the students commented how motivational it was to hear from such a distinguished athlete.

Charity Heroes The college held a “Charity Hero” day in December with students and staff dressing up as superheroes. Over £500 was raised for the Antony Nolan charity whose work supports the 25,000 or so people who are diagnosed with a blood cancer each year in the UK.

6Xtra As part of Blackpool Sixth’s commitment to developing and broadening students’ skills and enjoyment of sixth form life, we offer a varied programme of additional activities called 6Xtra. Some of these activities can lead to a qualification or sixth form certificates. Many activities and related workshops are designed to enhance UCAS applications and employability skills.

These provide opportunities for students to meet like-minded people and develop a wide range of skills and interests.

Our 6Xtra programme is divided into four categories which help students choose an activity based on what they want to achieve from an enrichment activity.

Work Experience opportunities mean you can complete placements in a career choice you may want to progress into after sixth form. Liaise with our work experience coordinator to secure an invaluable work experience placement that matches your career and progression aspirations.

Recreation Activities develop existing and equip you with new skills. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and work with a variety of new students who all have similar interests to you.

Performance and Excellence activities will enable you to further develop skills you already have and to perform within leagues, competitions and performances throughout the year.

Leadership volunteering activities develop your ability, knowledge and understanding of what it is to be an excellent leader. You will be able to volunteer in a variety of organisations and on projects both in the sixth form and externally.

The photography enrichment has developed my skills to use advanced features of a DSLR camera and built my knowledge of Photoshop to enhance my photographs effectively.

Blackpool Sixth offers a wide range of sport and other physical activities and the majority of our students choose to participate in one or more of them. Many take part for exercise and enjoyment alone, whilst others are members of one or more of our successful sixth form teams. Team sports at Blackpool Sixth have never been stronger. Many of these teams compete in the British Colleges’ League, the North West Colleges League, and National Schools’ competitions, which gives students the opportunity to compete at a high level and be selected for British Colleges’ national squads.

Basketball Academy The Basketball Academy is one of the top academies within the North West, teaching players not only the game of basketball but also the important life skills off the court.

Football Academy Our qualified coaches follow a successful curriculum to foster the development of individuals and the team as a whole. This team will compete against the best opposition in the North West of England on a regular basis.

Netball Academy The Netball Academy provides girls with the opportunity to train in an excellent environment as well as further their education. Our aims are to improve the technical skills of the players, to progress players’ understanding of netball and to increase participation in the sport. Students benefit from links with the England Netball North West Development Officer, and with Blackpool Netball Club.

Rugby League and Rugby Union Academies The Rugby Academies allow promising young players (male and female) to follow a structured training programme in a professional environment, whilst studying for A levels or BTEC courses.

International Students Blackpool Sixth welcomes applications from international students.

We have a number of students who come from outside the UK to study with us. In recent years, we have welcomed students from many different countries including Azerbaijan, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Italy, Lithuania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Slovakia, South Korea, Vietnam, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Our international students come to Blackpool Sixth mainly to obtain A levels and/or other advanced level qualifications which are highly regarded and are the passports to University study in the UK and in many other countries worldwide.

Blackpool Sixth enjoys excellent relations with universities all around the UK, and especially good links with local top universities such as the University of Lancaster and the University of Central Lancashire that are a relatively short drive away. We have a very good track record in supporting students with their applications to universities and have special programmes to support applicants to Oxford and Cambridge and to Medical Schools.

The Sixth Form has a very strong commitment to being an international community and we are always looking to forge strong links with other parts of the world. Our overseas students are full members of our sixth form and enjoy the same opportunities and facilities as all our other students.

There are social activities organised for international students throughout the sixth form year including special meals and visits to local attractions. Blackpool Sixth can also help arrange high quality host family accommodation for you during your time studying here.

Details of course fees and estimated costs for accommodation and living expenses are provided on our website www.blackpoolsixth.ac.uk. Students from EU or European Economic Area countries will normally qualify for free tuition. When you are ready to apply, use the on-line application form giving as much information as possible about you and your education.

CHOOSING THE How to choose?

Blackpool Sixth has a wide range of courses on offer. This allows you to select courses which exactly match your interests, abilities and future plans.

There are Five main programmes we offer. By “programme”, we mean ways of combining your choices in order to put together a set of courses which will meet your needs and

set you up perfectly for the next stage.

All programmes include Personal Tutor sessions and a 6Xtra choice.

In some cases, you need an ‘additional studies’ choice - see page 68 for details on these.

The A level programme This well-known programme provides an excellent preparation for university entry. It is also extremely flexible as you can choose almost any combination of AS courses.

In year 1 (Lower Sixth), you choose 4 AS courses. In year two (Upper Sixth), you study the second part of your courses, called A2.

Which A levels should I choose?

The best advice is to think carefully about what your plans are after A levels and choose courses which help you achieve this goal. For many Higher Education courses and jobs, however, the exact choice of A levels is not too important but it’s always worth checking out with your Careers Teacher.

If you don’t have a specific goal for after A levels, then you are best to choose subjects which both interest you and in which you feel you will do well. As part of your enrolment to Blackpool Sixth, we will talk through your course choices with you, so don’t worry if you are finding it hard to choose!

What kind of GCSE grades will I need?

For our 4 A level programme, we require at least 3 GCSEs at B grade and 3 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and Maths. The pass grades need to be in academic GCSEs and relate to your chosen AS courses.

Critical Thinking 6Xtra

Gifted Pathway This programme is for students who achieve mainly A* and A grades at GCSE. In Year 1 (Lower Sixth) you choose 4 AS courses. You will also take an exciting course called AS Critical Thinking (see page 67) which helps you extend your reasoning and analysis skills. It is well respected by top universities as evidence of your higher level abilities. You will also receive an individualised package of support to help you with applications to the more selective university courses such as Oxbridge

and Medical courses. There are specific tutor groups for gifted students to ensure that you benefit from spending time with other very high ability students.

Please note that you do not need to apply specifically for the Gifted Pathway. You will be advised at enrolment on the basis of your grades if it is likely that you will be eligible for entry onto the programme.

The Applied Programme (BTEC) This programme will appeal to those of you who want a more workrelated focus to your studies than the traditional A level courses offer.

These courses are all much more coursework-based than A levels. With this option, the core of your programme is a Level 3 BTEC qualification in one of a range of occupational areas. This qualification will count the same as two A levels (diploma) or three A levels (extended diploma) and is studied over two years. We also offer a number of subsidiary diplomas (equivalent to one A level). You can combine the BTEC courses with AS courses to complete your programme.

You can use this programme either to move into employment or to go onto university or other higher training.

Is this programme only for those definitely interested in particular jobs?

No. These are very well respected qualifications which will help you succeed in a wide variety of different career and study routes.

The main thing to think about when choosing this programme is that it offers more practical, “hands-on� learning than the academic A levels. If this is the way you like to work then you will get a lot out of these courses.

What kind of GCSE grades will I need?

As BTEC Level 3 Diplomas are advanced courses, we generally require 5 A*- C passes of C grade or above (or equivalent) including English Language or Maths. Your passes must cover at least three different subject areas.

The Technical Baccalaureate Programme The Technical Baccalaureate (TechBacc) is ideal for ambitious, talented students who want to pursue a technology-based career. It will give you the opportunity to be stretched and demonstrate your personal best. This new qualification combines a double or triple advanced level BTEC course with work-based projects and maths skills to give you a head start in a wide range of exciting careers.

2Plus Programme This programme is designed for those of you who want to move on to sixth form but who may not get 5 A - C’s at GCSE at this stage. The Level 2 Plus Programme offers you the perfect chance to improve your skills and take highly respected qualifications in a range of job related areas.

We interview all potential sixth form applicants during Year 11. You will receive details of your interview shortly after you return your application form. The interview might take place at your school or at Blackpool Sixth, depending on the school you are attending. Study programmes and entry requirements The A level programme • 4 AS courses You need 3 B grades and 3 C grades including English Language and Maths in six different GCSE subjects.

Gifted pathway students (those who achieve mainly A* and A grades) will also take AS level Critical Thinking

Advanced Applied Programme • Based around at least one BTEC Level 3 Diploma with the option of AS levels/Subsidiary BTEC diplomas/GCSE resits alongside this. Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour covering a wide range of topics including; the workings of the brain, memory, group behaviour, child development and psychological disorders. It can also be applied in wider settings such as; mental health, sport, education and forensics.

Sociology is the study of society. Sociologists conduct research to enable us to develop our understanding about the world today. We are all members of social groups (class, age, gender and ethnicity) and in Sociology we look at how belonging to different social groups affects our life chances. Health and Social Care BTEC Health and Social Care is a dynamic course that will lay the foundations for a future career within the health and social care sector. The course focuses on applying theory to real life and you will develop the skills needed to effectively work with service users in this developing and essential sector.

Where does it lead?

Photography can lead to a career within the creative industries. Our past students have gone on to work as freelance photographers, fashion photographers, sports photographers, medical photography, photojournalism and work in digital editing, filmmaking. Further study can include specialist Photography courses, Photo-Journalism, Graphic design, Fashion Promotion, Architecture, FineArt are just some of the options.

Fashion & Clothing The course covers many elements of professional practice from the fashion industry. After tuition in a number of basic techniques students are encouraged to develop their knowledge in a highly personalised way. The wide variety of career choices the fashion industry offers are reflected in the course content.

MTG indicates ‘minimum target grade’ based on entry qualifications.

AS Level Critical Thinking MTG A*, A, A/B This is part of the Gifted & Talented pathway. Critical Thinking involves developing the skills of debating, judging the relevance of information and evaluating claims and explanations (See further details on page 35).

AS Level General Studies MTG A/B, B, B/C Recognised by a wide range of universities, General Studies will encourage your curiosity about the world you live in. You will consider factual information on a range of topics and focus on discussion and debate, exploring meaning and explanation (See further details on page 40).

LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) MTG C, C/D, D, D/E, E for performing arts students The LAMDA course is ideal if you want to improve your performance skills in acting. You will develop specific acting skills e.g. how to communicate a character. Also you will grow in self confidence and improve your public speaking,

projection and stage presence.

LAMDA students will be entered for Grade 6 with the intention of progressing onto grades 7 and 8.

The LAMDA course offers UCAS points and is widely accepted at many universities and colleges.

Sports Leadership Award MTG C, C/D, D, D/E, E for Sports and PE students This is a nationally recognised leadership qualification, which prepares you to lead small groups in sport and recreational activities. Study on this award has a practical focus and you learn by doing. In addition to the 8 units to be followed, this award requires students to participate in a minimum of 10hrs of voluntary leadership outside of the college setting.

Successful completion of this award may lead you to the Higher Sports Leaders Award. This involves 8 units of study and a minimum of 30 hours of voluntary leadership. There are 30 UCAS tariff points awarded for candidates who successfully complete the qualification.

Extended Project Qualification MTG C, CD If you are not taking any of the above additional studies courses, and you have an MTG higher than a D you may be entered in your second year of college for the Extended Project Qualification.

This qualification is equivalent to

an AS level qualification and earns UCAS points. You will be allocated a supervisor to help support you investigate and complete a project of your choice. This will give you an excellent opportunity to enhance your research skills, in an area where you may have a particular interest.

Which Maths / English qualification will I take?

You will study GCSE English and/or Maths if you have not already obtained a grade C. If your grade is E for Maths, then you will start with a functional skills course.

GCSE MATHS OR Functional skills

What if I already have a grade C or above GCSE in English or Maths?

In this case you will be able to take a Level 3 BTEC single or an art based AS level in place of either GCSE Maths or English, depending on your results from school.

GCSE ENGLISH

What do I need?

The 2Plus Programme is aimed at students who don’t as yet have 5 GCSE qualifications including English and Maths.

A minimum of 4 D grades, plus a grade E or above in GCSE Maths or English (or equivalent) is required to begin the programme. GCSE English Language and Maths must be at E grade or higher.

CERTIFICATE IN PERSONAL FINANCE

Progression Successful completion of this programme, when combined with your existing GCSEs at grade C or above, will give you 5 GCSE equivalent qualifications.

This will allow you to move onto our Advanced Applied Programme (Level 3 BTECs).

You will also receive guidance and tasters to help you select your next step.

If travelling from the motorway, leave the M6 at junction 32 and join the M55.

Exit the M55 at junction 3 (Kirkham) and take the A585 northward. Turn left at the first major junction to join the A586 going west toward Blackpool.

At the next set of lights bear left, continuing west. After two miles turn right onto Blackpool Old Road and a quarter of a mile or so along Blackpool Old Road, you will find Blackpool Sixth on your right. Note that there are two other schools on Blackpool Old Road; Blackpool Sixth is the last of the three if you approach by the route described here.
