We continue to invest in our college buildings and facilities to ensure that students are learning in a vibrant, up to date and modern environment.

Our college campus has been likened to a university campus, giving students a taste of Further Education in a mature and friendly environment and supporting them on their next step.

The college facilities support students in their studies whether they are studying Media Production using the latest Apple Mac computers, Health & Social Care with bespoke classrooms for practical work or need access to the latest journals and books in the well-equipped library.

If you study 4 AS subjects you will have 5 periods per subject, over the week. In addition you will have 1 period of tutorial and 15 periods of study time, during which you will fit in your lunch.

If you study a Vocational course, you will have 13 periods across the week, including built-in placement / work experience, plus 1 period of tutorial and 14 study periods.

Some students may also have GCSE courses added to their timetable.

Study periods are intended for you to complete homework, coursework, wider reading, revision and extended study, during the college day.

Tip for Success!

It’s recommended that you study between 12 and 16 hours a week outside of timetabled lessons. On your timetable there are between 10 and 21 study periods available to help you complete your work, leaving you more time free in the evenings and weekends!

Our pastoral care is specialised for the 16-19 age group and we enrich the experience of our students with a huge range of additional opportunities and activities through our unique enrichment programme.

You will feel supported here in all aspects of college life, whether you need additional learning support and an individualised learning programme or are gifted and talented so will be supported through our XL programme designed to ensure that you maximise your potential.

Ashton XL We are pleased to welcome the most academically able to become part of our XL programme. We are committed to ensuring our most gifted students are stretched and challenged and relish their time with us. The XL Programme is designed to ensure that every single one of our XL students is equipped to compete successfully in any field; law, medicine, science, humanities, finance, politics, education and many more.

Progression to higher education is outstanding within the XL group, with 90% of students progressing to university and 70% progressing to Russell Group universities.

Pembroke North Ashton Sixth Form College was selected to work in partnership with Pembroke College, Oxford to deliver a unique and engaging programme to our students. The Pembroke North Programme introduces our students to the intense academic practice of Oxford University. Benefitting from Oxford’s first Access Fellow, Dr Peter Claus, students have the opportunity to engage with academics over the course of the year, developing their study skills as well as their subject knowledge via a number of lectures, seminars, tutorials and a summer residential at Oxford.

We are also delighted to be the host institution for The North West Theology and Religious Studies Centre, which opened in November 2013 as a regional centre of excellence for the teaching of Theology, in partnership with Pembroke College, Oxford.

Okay so you have decided you want to come to Ashton Sixth Form College – great choice! But what do you want to study?

Academic Pathway The A-Level route

—— With A-Levels you can develop your understanding of subjects you may have already studied at GCSE, or choose subjects that are new. You must choose to study 4 AS subjects in your first year, and then go on to take three or four of these subjects to A-Level in the second year.

Vocational Pathway The Diploma route

—— Diplomas are standalone vocational qualifications which focus on helping you learn skills to go into a particular area of work. These courses are excellent if you prefer practical work and assignments rather than sitting exams. Level 3 Extended Diplomas are equivalent to three A-Levels and take two years to complete. The Level 2 Diplomas take one year to complete and allow progression to Level 3.

So what do I need to get to do these courses?

There are specific entry requirements for all of our courses and we can help to advise the course that’s right for you.

In order to progress from the first year of your A-Levels (AS) to the second year of your A-Levels (A2) you will need to have had a successful first year and have passed at least three of your subjects.

In order to progress in to the second year of your vocational course you will need to work hard to keep on top of your coursework and ensure that everything is up to date by the end of your first year. *Course entry requirements can be subject to change at any time. 3D Design including Design Technology (AS/A Level) — If you are inspired by sculpture, craft and design work and would like to work with a variety of materials from clay to plastics, then this is the art course for you.

What will I learn on the course?

3D Design encompasses sculptural work; ceramics; craft and jewellery; product design; architecture; and interior and spatial design. You will use a variety of materials including paper, card, wire, ceramics, plastic and metal. 2D and 3D drawing media and techniques are explored and you will use digital photography for collecting research, developing ideas and recording your work.

What will this course prepare me for?

There are several 3D Design related university courses. These include glass, ceramics, product design, model making, jewellery design, sculpture, interior design, theatre design and landscape architecture.

What grades will I need?

At least 5 grades A* - C at GCSE including English Language. GCSE/BTEC Art is preferred.

— Fashion & Textiles —

(AS/A Level)

On this course you will learn techniques and processes such as machine/computer embroidery, appliqué, reverse appliqué, fabric manipulation, a variety of print techniques and dyeing methods.

What will I learn on the course?

Students produce an extensive range of samples and prototypes on this course and are encouraged to specialise in the area of fashion and textiles they are most interested in. You will also develop skills in drawing and digital photography to help with collecting research, developing ideas and recording your work.

What will this course prepare me for?

Many students go on to study an Art Foundation and then access Higher Education including fine art, fashion, costume design, business, textiles, weave knit, embroidery, plus many more.

What grades will I need?

Children’s Care, Learning and Development (Level 3 Extended Diploma)

This course will give you the experience and knowledge to work with babies and children in an early years, health or educational setting.

What will I learn on the course?

You will study a range of units covering all aspects of children’s needs and development. Workbased training is an integral part of the course and you will attend a work placement two days per week and college three days a week. If you’re serious about a career in the media industry, this course has everything you need to get a head start. Ashton Sixth Form College is an Apple authorised training centre with facilities that mirror those used in the creative digital media industry, with close links to Salford University and studio links at Media City you are in good hands.

You will study a range of topics including research and communication techniques, video and print production and deconstructing video games (Xbox, PS3 and Wii). Throughout the course you will be working collaboratively on video productions such as short films and music videos. Law students will learn about how laws are made, sentencing, the roles of the solicitor, barrister, magistrates and juries. If you want to discover how our legal system works – then study Law!

Psychology is the study of human behaviour and mental processes. This course will allow you to discover more about yourself and others around you. You’ll consider how our thoughts, feelings and biology interact to explain what we do.

What will I learn on the course?

You will have an opportunity to look closely at our legal system and understand where the laws we follow come from. This includes law made by Parliament and the Judges.

You will also have the opportunity to study substantive law in the first year and this will include Criminal law and Tort law. Not only will you develop a good understanding of the nature of crime but you will also know how we deal with suspected criminals through a trial procedure and the different types of sentences that could apply.

During the second year, we concentrate on Criminal law and this is studied in far greater detail. It will give you the chance to develop a real expertise in the area. We will look at topics such as murder, manslaughter, robbery, burglary and general defences to crime.

Sport & PE —

(AS/A Level)

This course is suitable for those hoping to pursue a career in the sports and recreation industries.

Most sports-related degrees require PE or Biology. It is also a suitable course for those interested in both studying and participating in sports.

What will I learn on the course?

You will study physiological reasons for increased sport performance, such as fitness components, muscular systems and the cardiovascular system as well as sport psychology and the implications of effective psychological preparation in sport. You will also look at the history of modern sport from the 1800s to the present day together with social and cultural factors which affect sport participation.

What will this course prepare me for?

Sport & PE has become a highly respected academic subject relevant to many degree courses.

Popular careers include teaching, physiotherapy, journalism and sport science.

What grades will I need?

At least 5 grades A* - C at GCSE including a grade C in English Language, Maths and CC in dual award Science or C in Biology.

Sport —

(Level 3 Extended Diploma)

If you not only enjoy taking part in sport but also have a real interest in the aspects surrounding and supporting performance, then this course is for you.

What will I learn on the course?

You will be involved in an extensive practical programme which is designed to improve your understanding of sport performance. The Body in Action, Health and Safety, Fitness, Sports Nutrition, Psychology for Sports Performance and Sports Coaching are just some of the many units you will cover. Due to the diverse nature of the course, a wide variety of teaching and learning styles will be utilised by the team, including group work, presentations and individual assignments.

Many topics will involve practical work and you will be expected to fully participate.

What will this course prepare me for?

Students can progress to a Higher Education course in Sports Studies, Leisure Management, Sports Coaching or to employment in sports development, coaching, health and fitness, and sports therapy.

At least 4 grades A* - C at GCSE or equivalent including minimum D grade in English Language or Maths.

When can I look around the College?

—— You can come and visit us during one of our Open Events on Tuesday 30th September 2014 between 5.30 – 8.00pm and Saturday 18th October 2014 between 10.00 – 1.00pm.

We also welcome visits from prospective students and their parents/carers at any time during the year to tour the college during the working day.

How do I choose which subjects to study?

—— There are a number of questions you should ask before deciding which subjects to study, such as: • What type of job do I want in the future?

• What do I want to study at university and are there specific subjects needed in order to gain admission?

• What do I enjoy studying?

You should also consider our entry requirements to ensure you choose courses that suit your ability.

How do I apply?

Admissions staff will be on hand to help you fill in

If you are studying at a school in Tameside then college staff will also visit your school to run several application workshops.

It is most important that you send your application to us by the deadline – Sunday 4th January 2015.

What if I miss the application deadline?

—— We are a very popular college and have large numbers of students apply to us each year.

Therefore to guarantee yourself a place you must apply before the deadline. Any late applications will be placed on a waiting list and will be advised to apply to other colleges in the area.

When do I find out if I have a place?

—— Everyone who applies to Ashton Sixth Form College will be invited to the college to attend an interview. These will take place between October – February in college. The interview is an opportunity to discuss the course options and for us to assess your suitability for the courses you wish to study with us. If you have had a successful interview with us then your place will be confirmed on the condition that you achieve the required grades on GCSE results day.

Will I get the chance to visit the college again before I start?

—— Yes! We hold a taster day in July, once your GCSE exams are over, so that you can experience your subjects before you start in September. Although the day isn’t compulsory, it is a great opportunity to meet with other students, your teachers and

I haven’t got the required grades for the course I want to do – what should I do?

—— Don’t worry! We offer a variety of courses with different entry requirements so we’ll find a course that’s right for you – previous students have started on a Level 2 course with GCSE re-sits in Maths or English Language and progressed on to a Level 3 Extended Diploma and beyond to University.

When does college start?

—— You will be given more details about when college starts at your interview. Generally your lessons will start during the first week of September but you will be required to come in to college to enrol on to your courses, sort out your timetable and attend an induction during the last couple of weeks of August.

When is enrolment?

—— Our enrolment will take place on Thursday 20th (GCSE Results Day) and Friday 21st August 2015.

You will receive further details and an enrolment appointment time in July.

At enrolment we check your GCSE results, ensure that you have met the entry requirement for your course programme and officially welcome you as an Ashton Sixth Form student. As this is an important time we ask that you avoid booking any holidays during this period.

Where will I study?

—— We are situated on Darnton Road– opposite Tameside Hospital, in Ashton-Under-Lyne. The college is easily accessible from surrounding areas within Tameside and has excellent transport links from Hyde, Denton, Droylsden, Oldham, Mottram, Glossop and Manchester.

Will I have a tutor at college?

—— As a full-time student at Ashton Sixth Form College you will have a Senior Tutor who is responsible for making sure you settle in quickly, guiding and advising you during your course and is on hand to help if problems arise. You will have regular one-to-one meetings with your tutor, and take part in group sessions on a range of topics such as personal safety, sexual health, how to organise your learning and study skills. You and your tutor will discuss your goals, and agree targets for your learning.

Do Ashton Sixth Form College students have lots of free periods?

—— Most students spend most of their week in classes. When they are not in class they have study periods where they are expected to study.

Less work done in study periods means more work to be done elsewhere.

What other support is there for me whilst at Ashton Sixth Form College?

—— Everyone who enrols on a course at Ashton Sixth Form College wants to succeed. All the teachers and other staff also want you to succeed. It is important that we all work together to create an atmosphere where everyone can learn to the best of their ability, and where everyone can achieve their goals.
