Mission – The Aliens are coming! As well as weekly spelling, grammar and handwriting lessons, this term 3D will be asked to complete regular missions. These missions will be completed around the theme of ‘The Aliens are coming!’ By completing these missions pupils will learn how to create an effective character description, write a non-chronological report and write an exciting, gripping fantasy story. 3D will be exploring how they can extend ideas by using conjunctions and sequencing words. Children will learn how to organise paragraphs around a theme and understand how to use organisational features of non-fiction texts. In addition to completing missions 3D be exploring the book ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth.’ Children will be listening to, reading, responding to and discussing the popular book. This will enable them to build their spoken vocabulary and articulate their own ideas. Children will continue with class guided reading sessions which allow them to read and discuss a range of fiction and non-fiction. Children will begin to identify themes and retell what happened orally. 3D will begin to identify how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning.

3D will be following ‘The Way, the Truth and the Life syllabus this year. In this first term we will be exploring ‘The Christian Family’. 3D will understand what it means to belong to a family and learn that Jesus belonged to the Holy Family. Children will go on to think about what it means to belong to the family of the Church and how it can help us. Additionally, 3D will understand that we join the Church when we receive the Sacrament of Baptism. 3D will go on to explore what happens when we receive the Sacrament of Baptism and reflect on the meaning of it. 3D will learn about some of the signs and symbols used in Baptism. Finally 3D will learn about the promises made at Baptism by parents and godparents and think about the importance of keeping promises. In addition to ‘The Way, the Truth and the Life’ syllabus, 3D will begin their journey of faith and begin the Sacramental Programme.

CHALLENGE - What makes the Earth angry? By exploring this challenge 3D will be looking at physical geography this term. Pupils will be exploring climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes, and the water cycle. We will discover how earthquakes and volcanoes are created and find out the impact that these have on humans around the world. 3D will also explore the physical features of the local area. Additionally we will be learning lots of new vocabulary and using this regularly in class. This term 3D will plan, design and make a simple board game based on magnets. Children will learn how to use a wide range of tools and materials to create a specific product that meets a range of requirements. They will learn how to evaluate their own and others products I order to improve them. In addition to this 3D will be creating their own volcano using a variety of materials. 3D will be using sketchbooks this year to collect, record and evaluate ideas. They will improve their skills in drawing and painting in relation to our topic of ‘Here on Earth’. This will include sketching volcanoes, painting planet earth and looking and the different style of famous artists.

This term 3D will understand what communication and collaboration is in relation to information technology. They will be able to explain what the internet can be used for. Children will understand what it means to carry out ‘relevant’ searches on the internet. Additionally, children will learn to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. 3D will also begin to understand what programming is and what it means to debug a program.

Number This term children will be recognising the place value of 3 digit numbers, comparing and ordering numbers up to 100 and reading and writing numbers up to 1000. Additionally 3D will be learning how to add and subtract 3 digit numbers and ones, adding and subtracting numbers with 3 digits and solving problems relating to these skills. 3D will also begin to learn their multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables. Measurement 3D will explore the number of seconds in a minute and the number of days in a month, year and leap year. Additionally children will measure, compare, add and subtract lengths (mm/cm/m). Statistics 3D will learn how to interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables. CHALLENGE – What do rocks tell us about the way the Earth is formed? In science this term 3D will compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties. Additionally, they will describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock. 3D will also recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter. Children will begin to classify igneous and sedimentary rocks and relate the properties of the rocks to their uses. This will coincide with their geography challenge – ‘what makes the Earth angry?’ 3D will use running, jumping, catching and throwing in isolation and in combination during PE lessons this term in order to increase their skills in competitive invasion games such as football and netball. In addition to this 3D will be working on their stamina, strength and agility in floor work during gymnastics lessons. This term 3D will discuss relationships and begin to recognise and respond appropriately to a wider range of feelings of others. In addition to this we will explore what a positive, healthy relationship is and develop the skills to form and maintain them. In relation to our Geography challenge 3D will create repeated patterns with different instruments and combine different sounds to create a specific mood or feeling. They will do this to replicate the sounds of volcanoes and how this can affect humans. This year 3D will be learning the Spanish language. They will begin by listening to and responding with the appropriate vocabulary. They will then go on to explore the language through stories, songs, rhymes and poems. Additionally, 3D will begin to learn how to speak in sentences and develop accurate pronunciation of the language.
