Aim s The National Curriculu m for mat h e m a t i c s aims to ensur e that all pupils: • beco m e flu e n t in the funda m e n t al s of mat h e m a t i c s, including through varied and frequ e n t practic e with incre a sin gly complex proble m s over time, so that pupils have conc e p t u al unde r s t a n din g and are able to recall and apply their knowled g e rapidly and accur a t ely to proble m s •

Pupils should mak e conn e c tion s across mat h e m a t i c al ideas to dev elop fluency, mat h e m a t i c al reas o ning and comp e t e n c e in solving incre a singly sophisticat e d proble m s . They should also apply their mat h e m a t i c al knowled g e to scienc e and oth er subject s.

Attai n m e n t tar g e t s By the end of each key stag e , pupils are exp e c t e d to know, apply and unde r s t a n d the mat t e r s , skills and proce s s e s specified in the releva n t progr a m m e of study.

Key Stag e 1 The principal focus of mat h e m a t i c s teac hing in Key Stag e 1 is to ensur e that pupils dev elop confide nc e and me n t al fluency with whole numb e r s , counting and place value. This should involve working with num e r al s, words and the four oper a tion s, including with practical resourc e s (e.g. concr e t e objects and me a s u ring tools). At this stag e , pupils should dev elop their ability to recognis e, describ e, draw, comp a r e and sort differ e n t shap e s and use the relat e d vocab ulary. Teaching should also involve using a rang e of me a s u r e s to describ e and comp a r e differe n t quan titie s such as length, ma s s, capa city/volu m e , time and mon e y. By the end of Year 2, pupils should know the numb e r bonds to 20 and be precis e in using and und er s t a n di n g plac e value. An emp h a si s on practic e at this early stag e will aid fluency.
