Literacy – Reading/Writing – Fiction: ‘The Saga of Eric The Viking’ by Terry Jones. To use novel as basis for exploring characterisation, settings, language, plot development and to develop an appreciation and understanding of the genre of myths and traditional tales. The children will have the opportunity to identify themes and make comparisons with other stories. A wide variety of writing types will be explored through the novel, such as diaries, letterwriting, newspaper reports and descriptive story-writing. They will also have the opportunity to look at the Viking poem, ‘Beowulf’ and rehearse and perform it as a choral piece by heart. They will also see it performed by a professional drama group. In addition to this, the children will also develop their spoken English through weekly work with MAEI, which will culminate in a production in the summer. Your child will have set spelling lists to learn and grammar, vocabulary and punctuation will play an important part of their weekly literacy schedule.

6G and 6M – Autumn Term

Numeracy - Throughout the year, the children will be taught the following areas of numeracy – Place-Value; Calculation skills (both written and mental); Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Ratio and Proportion; Algebra; Measurement; Properties of Shape; Position and Direction; Statistics. It is essential your child knows all their times tables up to 12x12 as they are an integral part in all the above mathematics. Mental Maths will once again play an important part in daily maths lessons.

Religion – In Religion, we will be looking at two units – ‘The Kingdom of God’ and ‘Justice’. In ‘The Kingdom of God’, the children will be introduced to the concept of the Kingdom of God. They will explore the concept of the Kingdom of God through some of the parables and miracles of Jesus and ways in which people respond to Jesus’ invitation to belong to his Kingdom. In ‘Justice’, the children will learn what justice is and know that they are called to work for justice in the world.
