Primary schools across Pendle were invited to take part in an art competition which celebrates Pendle’s 40th birthday. On April 1, 1974 Pendle was born, bringing together nine different district and town councils including Earby and Barnoldswick, which were previously in Yorkshire. And Pendle Council asked youngsters to design a piece of artwork to mark the birth of the borough and highlight what they like about the area. His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Smith Benson, judged more than 100 entries on 2 nd June and 11year-old Alisha Abbas’ artwork caught his eye. The youngster from Lomeshaye Junior School in Nelson has won £200 for the school as well as a £25 book token for herself. Councillor Benson said: “The competition was all about encouraging our youngsters to help us celebrate all that Pendle has to offer. “We received lots of really fantastic pieces of artwork! Many reflected what they like to do with their families and what Pendle is famous for. “The winning piece was very eye catching and had many quotes about what Alisha enjoys about Pendle such as friendly people and our parks. “It was really difficult selecting one winner so I decided that we should have a highly commended category too!” Youngsters who will receive a highly commended certificates are Taiyba Shamraiz, aged 11, Walverden Primary School; Hadeesa Asif, aged 11, Walverden Primary School; Sahil Akhtar (age) from Lomeshaye Junior School and Fatima Naseer (age) from Lomeshaye Junior School. Councillor Benson will be attending an assembly at Lomeshaye Junior School on Wednesday June 11th to present a certificate and book token to Alisha and hand over the £200 cheque to the school. Mr Smith said “The children in our school were enthused by the competition and really wanted to celebrate Pendle and their passion for Pendle through Art. We had images of hills, witches, trees, parks and much much more! Alisha was thrilled when she found out she had won.”
