5L/M Literacy – Reading/Writing – Treasure Island – novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. To use novel as basis for exploring characterisation, settings, language, plot and story structure. The children will experiment with a wide variety of writing types through the novel, such as diaries, letter-writing, poetry, newspaper reports and descriptive narrative. Speaking and Listening – MAEI drama work. Grammar/Punctuation – KS2 objectives revised.

Maths –Continued teaching of KS2 objectives – Calculations, Using and Applying within Problems, Measure, Shape and Data Handling. To continue developing their mental skills and strategies. Music – To listen to, appreciate, compose and create music of South American origin, such as samba. To write own football chants using music which is familiar to them.

History – To explore the history of the World Cup, from its origins to the present day. To identify foundermember countries, famous players and particular tournaments. To explore the impact of the World Cup on the global community. Geography –To explore the climate, social economics and landscape of Brazil, in-particular the rainforests. To examine deforestation and climate-change.

ICT – To use computer software to design a virtual sports ‘village’ for the competing football teams. To use spread-sheet software to calculate costs for a virtual team trip to Brazil.

P.E. – During the summer term, the children will be taking part in Cricket, Basketball and Athletics.

Religion – [1] Life in The Risen Lord – The children will have the opportunity to know and understand that Jesus is risen from the dead; know that He is present among us in different ways; know and understand the ‘Our Father’ and that we can pray in different ways; learn to pray the Rosary and that the Glorious Mysteries help us to think about the Resurrection of Jesus. [2] People of Other Faiths – Sikhism – The children will learn that we live in a country where people have different beliefs and cultures; they will explore the Sikh religion – its beliefs, origins, festivals and significant individuals; they will have the chance to appreciate what we have in common with Sikhs.

Art/DT – To investigate the work of the Brazilian artist, Romero Britto, and to paint/draw in a similar style. To design and create authentic Brazilian carnival masks.

Science – [1] How We See Things - The children will learn that mirrors and shiny surfaces alter the direction in which light travels and that when they see objects, light enters the eye. [2] Changing Sounds – The children will learn that sounds are produced by vibrations and that these vibrations travel from the source through a variety of materials. Musical instruments will be used to illustrate the range of ways of producing sounds and how pitch and loudness can be altered.
