Ashton Community Science College Introduction Welcome to the Key Stage 4 Curriculum booklet. The purpose of this booklet is to help students and parents to decide together which options to study throughout Years 9, 10 and 11.

In order to allow our students more curriculum time on their options and to reduce the anxieties sometimes associated with GCSE exams, we have started the option process in Year 9. ALL THREE option subjects will commence at the beginning of Year 9.

We strongly believe that our curriculum should be accessible for all our students whatever their strengths and abilities. We therefore offer a wide ranging and comprehensive set of options that will allow students to select subjects at the appropriate level.

To this end, and to reflect the current educational reforms, it is vital that our most able students follow a rigorous and academic curriculum. All Science Set 1 students must follow the English Baccalaureate requirements: •

French from either Option Block A or C AND

History or Geography from either of the other Option Blocks.

This allows for one further option choice to be made in addition to studying Triple Science, Maths and English.

In the following pages, the different courses and opportunities are explained in greater detail. All students must choose one subject from the top section (either: History, Geography or French) plus TWO additional subjects from the other TWO blocks.

Key Stage 4 Subjects Studied There have been numerous announcements over the past few years aimed at the reform of 14-19 education. These are to create flexibility in the curriculum, whilst maintaining a strong focus on the ‘basics’.

In line with current government initiatives we are constantly updating and refining the number of option choices available. As a result we offered a new set of options in September for the first time. This allowed the students greater choice as well as giving the timetable breadth.

To provide a balanced curriculum for students, all subjects offered have been placed in three groups or option blocks. Students should select ONE subject (and a reserve) from each block to commence in Year 9 in September 2014.

Making Decisions Making decisions is never easy! The decisions you will have to make about which Courses to take at Key Stage 4 are very important. They will affect the rest of your life. It is essential that you think carefully regarding which subjects to study.

Your choice will depend on your ability at various subjects, your interests and career.

We try our best to give students what they want and need, but classes have to be of certain minimum sizes, and our offer of subjects depends upon numbers. Students will not be allocated on a ‘first come first served basis, but will be considered on their suitability for the Course.

English Baccalaureate

General Information The recent Government White Paper sets out the intention to promote a wider range of academic qualifications through the introduction of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc).

Qualification Achieved This ‘qualification’ involves students gaining a Grade C or above in: • • • • •

Maths, English, Two Sciences, A Humanities subject (Geography or History) and A Modern Foreign Language

To facilitate this, we have extended our Curriculum to allow students to access both a Humanities subject (Geography OR History) and a Modern Foreign Language as part of their Option choices.

Exam Details •

This choice of options will involve all students undertaking a GCSE in either History or Geography. Those students who want to access the EBacc in full should also choose French as one of their other options.

Foundation Tier (C- G)

English English Literature

It is a full GCSE. It is currently taught in Years 9 and 10, allowing for teaching of English Language in Years 10 and 11.

It follows the AQA Specification.

It involves taking Higher Tier (A*-C) or Foundation Tier (C-G).

It provides more able students the opportunity to take two subjects.

It opens up greater opportunities to study English (Language) iGCSE as an alternative route.

Qualification Achieved GCSE Grades A*-G available Course Content The aim of the Literature Course is to study texts which develop reading and the enjoyment and understanding of poetry, prose and drama (including Shakespeare and pretwentieth century texts).

Students will be encouraged to develop their awareness of personal, social and cultural differences and significances and to reflect on the linguistic and cultural diversity of society in the range of texts chosen for study.

Controlled Assessment Details • •

SCIENCE OPTIONS - 2014 The Science Faculty offers a comprehensive range of courses at Key Stage 4 in order to meet the needs of each and every student.

Those students who achieve a high level of success throughout Key Stage 3 in Science will be offered the chance to either study GCSE Triple Science:

and

Physics

throughout Years 10 and 11, or Core Science, Additional Science and Further Science. This enables students to achieve three Science GCSE passes.

Students who are better suited to a more vocational approach will be offered the opportunity to study for a GCSE in Core Science in Year 10 followed by a more coursework-based GCSE in Additional Applied Science in Year 11.

The other course offered is BTEC Level 2 Firsts in Applied Science, which is the equivalent to 2 GCSEs. The expected routes are as detailed below, although this may change in response to the needs of our students: Set

Triple Award Science General Information The new specifications for GCSE Science offer students a firm foundation for further study at A-level and for students who want to specialise in other sciences.

Qualification Achieved Students successfully completing the Triple Science course will achieve 3 separate GCSE qualifications in: • Biology • Chemistry • Physics

Course Content This course provides a firm foundation for progression to AS and A level Science courses: • The Biology content gives students the opportunity to gain a good understanding of human biology, organisms, evolution and the environment.

• The Chemistry content gives students a good understanding of the nature of substances and how they react together, how chemistry is used in business and industry and how our use of fuels affect the local and global environment.

• The Physics content gives students a good understanding of the use and transfer of energy, as well as an insight into the nature of waves, radiation and space.

They will also learn about the application of physics in the real world they live in.

Assessment Structure Each course comprises three written examinations accounting for 75% of the total marks, and these are due to take place in June 2017. Each of these exams is available in two tiers – Higher (A*-D) and Foundation (C-G).

The remaining 25% of the marks are accounted for by the CAU (Controlled Assessment Unit). This is centred around a practical investigation that the students research and plan themselves and involves two written, internally-assessed examinations.

Useful for Careers in: Success in this course will open the door to a wide range of further education courses such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics A levels as well as leading to careers including scientific research and medicine.

Applied Science BTEC First

General Information The structure of the new BTEC Firsts in Applied Science is designed to reflect the unique nature of science learning - in particular, the fact that content must span three disciplines (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) rather than just one.

Qualification Achieved To ensure sufficient breadth and depth Applied Science has two Awards: • Principles of Applied Science Award (Year 10) • Application of Science Award (Year 11) Course Content The Principles of Applied Science Award delivers the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study by covering the key scientific principles vital for both scientists and citizens of the future. It develops and exemplifies these principles in applied and vocational contexts, leading to an understanding of how the principles are applied in practice.

The Application of Science Award is suitable for students who have covered the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study. It develops students' understanding of key applications of science, and builds the skills required both for the scientific workplace and for further study.

This unique structure for Applied Science mirrors the structure for GCSE. The benefits for teachers and learners include: • Ensures breadth of science learning • Provides a straightforward structure for teachers to timetable and deliver • Maximises progression opportunities for learners into employment or further learning both within and outside the field of science.

This course provides an ideal foundation for progression to the post-16 Level 3 course offered at Ashton Community Science College Sixth Form.

Assessment Structure The new BTEC Level 2 Firsts in Applied Science contain two forms of assessment: • Internal Assessment (75%): Teacher-led assessment of assignment tasks completed by the students throughout the duration of each Award.

• External Assessment (25%): Written examinations – one for each of the two Awards.

The Principles of Science exam comprises a variety of question types including objective questions, structured questions and calculations. The Applications of Science exam assesses candidates’ skills in Planning, Processing and forming Conclusions - skills most vital to effective scientific investigations.

Useful for Careers in: Success in this course will open the door to a range of careers including laboratory technicians, physiotherapy, sports science and forensic science.

GCSE Science A and GCSE Additional Applied Science General Information The new specifications for GCSE Science offer students a firm foundation for further study at Alevel and for students who want to specialise in other sciences.

Qualification Achieved Students successfully completing the GCSE Science A and GCSE Additional Applied Science courses will achieve 2 separate GCSE qualifications.

Course Content GCSE Science A gives students a good basic knowledge of Science by studying a single unit from each of the core sciences. It is suitable for students of all abilities and the course encourages students to understand theoretical concepts alongside developing practical Science skills.

Additional Applied Science integrates the study of biology, chemistry and physics. This specification concentrates on particular disciplines of science and those scientists that work with them. It also allows candidates to develop some of the knowledge and skills used in these disciplines. Following the specification will introduce candidates to work-related learning and equip them with some of the skills they will need in the workplace or in further education or training. It will also empower candidates to take charge of their own learning and provide a range of teaching, learning and assessment styles to motivate candidates to achieve the best they can.

Assessment Structure The GCSE Science A course comprises four components: • 3 external 1 hour papers (1 each for Biology, Chemistry and Physics), each worth 25%, to be sat in June 2016.

• A Controlled Assessment worth 25% of the overall qualification. This takes the form of an ‘Investigative Skills Assignment’ – two written assessments involving practical work and data processing.

For the GCSE Additional Applied Science course, coursework forms a larger part of the assessment – 60 per cent – compared with other science GCSEs where it is 25 per cent. This takes the form of a Controlled Assessment based on two assignments: ‘Investigating the work of scientists and how they use science’ and ‘How scientists use evidence to solve problems’. GCSE COMPUTING General Information This is a course that has real relevance in the new technological age; particularly given the increasing use of smartphones and tablets using applications or ‘Apps’. While students will no doubt already have some knowledge of computers and even some experience of programming; do they really understand how it all works? Do they know what the processor chip really does? Do they know how the App was made or how Siri software or even a Furby works?

This course will provide an in-depth understanding of how computer technology works and looks at what goes on in the parts of a computer that they can’t see. A large part of the course is about computer programming, using the Python programming language and also AppInventor and Scratch.

Qualification Achieved GCSE Computing, grades A*-G Course Content The GCSE Computing course covers the fundamentals of computer systems, such as hardware and software and students will carry out practical investigations by solving problems using programming languages. A vital skill in this subject is being able to apply knowledge, solve problems, analyse and evaluate their findings.

Coursework Details There is no coursework requirement for this course, however there are two timed controlled assessments which are internally assessed, one is a practical investigation and one a programming project.

One examination of 1 hour 30 minutes; 40% of the total GCSE. Two controlled assessments timed over 20 hours, each is 30% of the total GCSE. All students have the opportunity to achieve a grade ranging from A*-G

Information technologies continue to have a growing importance. This means there will be a bigger demand for professionals who are qualified in this area. Art, Design & Technology Art General Information • • • • •

It is a GCSE Course.

It follows the AQA unendorsed specification/or the graphics option.

It involves differentiation by outcome (everyone undertakes the same work although an individual and personal response is required).

Basic drawing equipment is required, including pencils, rubber and sketchbook Some creative skill is desirable and the ability to draw is essential.

Art, Design & Technology Art and Design General Information The BTEC Art and Design Qualification is designed to provide a specialist work – related qualification. The BTEC will give learners the opportunity to develop a range of practical Art & Design skills and techniques, preparing them for future Post 16 study here at Ashton, BTEC level 3 Diplomas and certificates.

Qualification Achieved Edexcel BTEC level 2 extended certificate in Art and Design Equivalent to 1 GCSE qualification Course Content This BTEC qualification has three mandatory units plus optical units that provide unique combinations.

The three mandatory units are: • Contextual references in Art & Design (artist journal) • 2D visual design (canvas design) • 3D visual communication ( sculpture design) Trip to ‘YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE’ Park One final major project • Decided year on year Coursework Details The learner must produce evidence in order to receive a pass, merit or distinction grade.

No exam but deadlines to meet and formal assessment given along the length of the course.

Business Studies General Information This course is designed to deepen students' understanding of the way in which businesses operate in a dynamic, changing and competitive world. Business Studies helps students understand more about how and why businesses operate in the way that they do, such as why they use gorillas in their advertisements or why share prices go up and down.

Students will be able to relate what they study to everyday activities, such as purchasing goods, and the news reported in the media. Business Studies can open up a wide range of opportunities for further learning. As well as developing students’ knowledge and understanding of the world of business, this course helps students develop a range of skills such as: • Decision-making • Interpreting and managing information • Devising solutions to problems and issues Qualification Achieved GCSE Business Studies, grades A*-G Course Content The course is structured into Units and these are all mandatory and include: • Marketing and Enterprise • Business and People • Production and Finance • The External Business Environment

Coursework Details There is no course work but there is one timed controlled assessment which is internally assessed and is worth 25% of the overall grade. This takes place over 16 lessons.

Exam Details • • •

Two written examinations. The first is worth 25% of the total grade and consists of short response answers. The second exam is worth 50% of the total grade and is based upon pre-released case study material which will be studied in class prior to the exam.

One controlled assessment timed over 16 hours; 25% of the total GCSE. All students have the opportunity to achieve a grade ranging from A*-G

Creative iMedia General Information This OCR Level 2 course has been designed to give students an introduction to the skills, knowledge and understanding required to prepare them for work in the Creative Media sector. They have also been designed to help candidates develop their personal skills in the areas of planning and prioritising, career planning, communication and problem solving.

Qualification Achieved The qualification will be studied at Level 2 and can be worth ½ GCSE (Short Course), 1 or 2 GCSE Grades at A* - C. • •

Course Content This course offers a range of 11 different units. Mandatory units are studied to help students to understand the basics of the creative and media sector. Coursework Details Students study a number of different units, two mandatory units and selection of optional units. Unit’s R081 and R082 are mandatory in which R081 also includes an exam in year 11; others are taken from a combination of units to give as broad an experience as possible. Each unit is assessed by the completion of a range of assignments, which are assessed in school. These assignments are graded in the format of PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION. Exam Details One unit is assessed externally using a paper-based exam, marked by OCR. The assessment must be taken by the learner under exam conditions and will last for one hour fifteen minutes.

BTEC First Award in Performing Arts - Dance (Level 1/Level 2) General Information •

A focused vocational qualification for learners designed to provide an engaging and stimulating introduction into the world of performing arts. The qualification builds on learning from Key Stage 3 and provides a good introduction to performing arts for learners in post-16 education, ensuring that every learner who completes it has a level of understanding and skills on which to build on at a later date.

Qualification Achieved Level 2 BTEC First Award in Performing Arts Dance, awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Worth 1 GCSE grade equivalent at A - C. Level 1 BTEC First Award in Performing Arts Dance allows progression onto the Level 2 course.

Most learners will achieve the Level 2 qualification.

Course Content – 3 units to be completed Year 9 - Unit 4 -Dance workshops and Dance skills development, learning all styles of Dance.

Year 10 - Unit 2 - Preparation, Performance and Production and completion of Unit 4.

Year 11 - Unit 1 – Individual Showcase and completion of Unit 2.

Coursework Details 75% internal assessment - Written evidence and videoed performance-based evidence.

Assessment Details All assessment is practical. There are no written examinations. A written record of practical work will be required. Assessment is through controlled assessment tasks, which are part of the programme of study.

VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy

This Course takes place over a three-year period.

Students in Year 9 will have tasters in all aspects of the industry and become familiar with the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy environment.

Year 10 and 11 will study towards the formal qualification.

This course will be taught in theory rooms and the Hair and Beauty Training Salon.

The course is made up of externally set exams, assignments that are externally moderated assignments and projects. On successful completion of the formal requirements for the course, the students will be able to have tasters in practical skills of Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy. Practical work has no formal qualification attached to this course.

Qualification Achieved Students will receive a nationally recognised VTCT Level 2 Qualification that will allow them to progress onto Level 2 Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy in Year 12.

A focused vocational qualification for learners designed to provide an engaging and stimulating introduction into the world of performing arts. The qualification builds on learning from Key Stage 3 and provides a good introduction to performing arts for learners in post-16 education, ensuring that every learner who completes it has a level of understanding and skills on which to build on at a later date.

Qualification Achieved Level 2 BTEC First Award in Performing Arts (Acting) or (Music Performance). Awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Worth 1 GCSE grade equivalent at A - C. The course is a mix practical and theory.

A high level of practical performance is essential as this contributes 60% of your final overall grade.

Qualification Achieved GCSE Grade A*-G available Course Content The course is split into two major sections: Unit 1 – The Theory of Physical Education Section 1 – Healthy, active lifestyles Section 2 – Your healthy, active body These two components of the theory look at various issues including long term benefits of physical activity, exercise, diet and the impact of a healthy active lifestyle on their cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular and skeletal systems.

Unit 2 – Performance in Physical Education Section 1 – Practical Performance Section 2 – Analysis of Performance You must choose 4 sports/activities from a list provided covering over 65 activities including major games, athletics, swimming and dance.

In addition all students must complete a 6 week Personal Exercise Programme (PEP) Exam Details Theory – One theory paper – 1 hour 30 minutes in length, including multiple choice, short and long answer questions. This is worth 40 % of the final mark. All students sit the same paper.

Practical – Ongoing practical assessment for the duration of the course. One practical exam spread over 2 days in Year 11. Together these account for 48% of the final mark.

Art, Design & Technology Resistant Materials Qualification Achieved GCSE Grades A* - G available Course Content You will study a variety of materials, principally wood, metal and plastics.

• You will study materials in order to explore, investigate and develop products.

• During Years 9 and 10 you make a range of small products, using a variety of materials and manufacturing processes.

• At the end of Year 10 the major project starts and is completed in Year 11.

An important feature of Resistant Materials is that it makes immediate and practical use of knowledge and skills from other subjects. It is linked with Art and Design, ICT, Mathematics and Science.
