Chess Report Bishop Martin kicked off the new Chess league with a match against Crow Orchard last night. 8 children went with 6 representing the school competitively. The result was a 10:7 win for Bishop Martin! This marks the first ever victory for the school in a chess match and shows just how much the pupils have improved over the last year! The team was made up of Year 4 and Year 5 children so there is plenty of time to get even better! Bring on the next match! Attendance figures for week ending 19th April 2013.

On 25th April there was a Handball tournament at Glenburn. 5 schools took part including Bishop Martin. 10 of our Year 6 children were involved in this amazing event (Robyn, Jenna, Caitlin, Ashley, Adam, Andrew, Nikita, Markuss, Tom and the Goalkeeper, Rebecca). We played 4 games in total. We drew one game and won the other 3! We played together really well and supported each other. All our faces lit up as Mr Lane, the event organiser announced that we were the overall winners! By Robyn, Jenna and Caitlin.

Congratulations to the Lions on achieving 98.3% 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 5th 7th

Helping your child when they get 'stuck' on a word. Here are some ideas to help...  Wait five seconds to encourage your child to try themselves first. Then ask “What does the word start with?” “Can you say the sounds in order?” “What would fit in and makes sense?”  Wait five seconds to allow your child to think. Praise them if they give a word which makes sense.  Ask one or two questions which are to do with the meaning of the story and might give them a lead.  Use the pictures.  If they still do not know, then tell them the word. You can go back later if you feel they may benefit, but don’t spoil the story. IN THE NEXT NEWSLETTER... Helping your child when they make a mistake in their reading.
