ANOTHER PLACE (by Beatrice DeGoede, Y6)

There I was. A piece of art laid before my very eyes. Hokusai’s masterpiece landscape, Carson Collins’ colourful inspiration, a spectacle to be treasured. All of a sudden, the howling wind hit me, almost knocking me off my feet. Its turbulence snatching the paper we were holding from our hands. We battled with the violent current of air, forcing ourselves past the impulsive gusts of glacial wind. Fighting us ferociously, it was like a rhinoceros. The sky was grey and dull. It was crowded with depressing clouds. The sea roared. It was an aggressive, wild beast, fighting for our attention. Waves ascended high into the air then collapsed into an eruption of water and sand. They were white stallions, galloping upwards. The water arrived at our feet, squelching. The atmosphere was unfamiliar and peculiar: what with the dark silhouettes dispersed across the beach, the faint outline of people in the distance and the shape of drowning figures in the dominating water. What were they doing? Were they hurt? Should I help? Questions fogged in my mind, clouds of inquiries. Just then, I realised. These were the sculptures we had come here to see. I trudged on in a trance. The sound of shells shattering beneath my feet echoed in my ears. Subconsciously, I approached the “people”. They were a mystery to me, a jigsaw puzzle which I was finding difficult to complete. The truth was, I was As part of ‘Another Place’, Y6 study Immigration & Emigration to America and The Irish potato Famine of the 1800’s. This is often used as the basis for learning across all areas of the curriculum.
