The most beneficial part of the trip was not just the incredible classroom debates with student leaders from around the world or the valuable classroom lectures, it was the lasting friendships I created. I know if someday I am in Brazil, Argentina or Chile I will have a place to stay and friends to welcome me. By far the best two weeks of my entire life! Learn to adapt to your surroundings, hone a second language and problem-solve in a different part of the world.

When Dr. Lena Rippstein, director of nursing at Schreiner University, came across International Service Learning— an educational service that enlists medical and educational volunteer teams to provide services to underserved populations in Central and South America—she knew it was something her BSN students should experience. In August, Rippstein and 12 nursing students spent nine days in Costa Rica. The students, which were split into teams of three, assessed anywhere from 30 to 50 patients a day per group. The experience, although different for each student, was positive, and each nursing student left with a better knowledge of skills and a newfound respect for the people of Costa Rica.

Maggie standing in the National Congress of Chile, “Congreso Nacional,” Valparaiso, Chile The Institute for Leadership in the Americas (ILA) is a unique program that brings together approximately 50 students from throughout Latin America and the United States to study economics, political theory and the bases for the rule of law and institutional governance. This program allows participants to study the foundations of Chile’s progress and to learn about the political and economic necessities of a free society. The classes, conversations and debates that participants have at ILA will benefit their educational and professional development.

Kathy Calhoun Hicks (second from right), as a third-year medical student at Baylor University Medical Center—which partners with Texas A & M Science Center—experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She actually observed the first ever full-face transplant, led by Dr. Elof Eriksson and a 35-member surgery team. When she completes her medical training, she plans to perform reconstructive surgery, helping others with disfigurements.

I wanted a school that would challenge me and force me to become stronger and this is exactly what Schreiner did. I was given multiple chances to excel and take command with projects that most people in college are never given. My mind never slept, and it was

constantly processing new ideas. Kathy Calhoun Hicks ’09 Major: Biology Hometown: Hunt, TX

Jewelry designer Jill Reno thought she’d get her MBA and become an attorney, not an artist. While at Schreiner University, she learned to follow her passion. Today, celebrities and people all around the world wear her custom jewelry.

At Schreiner I learned the importance of giving back. Now 10 percent of all revenues Jill Reno Collection makes goes directly to feeding the poor and taking care of orphans. I also learned invaluable marketing skills, business skills and skills to think outside the box, creatively. I cannot tell you how many times I relied on my Schreiner education to make wise business decisions. My education gave me the confidence to apply the skills I had learned in college to create a thriving business.

Stefan Mecay, mathematics professor worked on a research project with four students on a dice game called “Can’t Stop” that was presented at the Texas Academy of Science. They met once a week to devise their own strategies using game theory and probability to complete the project.

Chemistry professor Kiley Miller rarely believes in administering a traditional test. Instead, he sends students all over campus much like a scavenger hunt—measuring this, analyzing that, determining what kind of equipment is needed for thorough analysis. Jake (pictured above)— who intends to do graduate study in biomedical research—explains: “Miller’s problem sets require not just knowledge, but also an equal measure of creativity and academic courage.” Students have been known to brag that they have spent as much as 24 hours on a take-home test. “Professor Huey, by far, has been the most

inspiring faculty member for me here at Schreiner University. He’s a great person to be around because of his caring nature, strong belief and faith in God,” Longoria said. “He always tells us to ‘embrace complexity,’ and that is going to help us understand how to deal with everything we have on our plate—in school and in life.” Manny Longoria III ’13 Major: Accounting Hometown: El Paso, TX

EXPERI I knew I wanted to be a vet since I was 8 years old, and at 14 or 15, I knew I wanted to specialize in large animal medicine. This internship only solidifies my choice in profession. I am so excited I get to do this for the rest of my life. The Freeman-Fritts Clinic was looking for weekend workers, and I jumped at the opportunity and made it into an internship. I get to shadow the vet, take care of wildlife and basically have my hand in everything! Drucilla Meier ’15 Major: Biology/pre-Vet Hometown: Clyde, TX

There’s considerable evidence that global personality traits—largely genetically based—are a predictor of an individual’s philosophical beliefs. I’ve been working closely with Dr. Miller, Dr. Feltz and Dr. McGinnis on what we believe to be the first study to attempt to predict philosophical beliefs directly from the human genome. Fulfilling a dream

ENTIAL Schreiner University is the only college in the nation in which the entire freshman class participates in a series of elaborate learning games set in history. In Reacting to the Past, Schreiner students are assigned roles of characters living in some of civilization’s most pivotal times, and from that point onward, they are in charge of making their own history. As they develop their roles, informed by classic texts in the history of ideas, they learn to take on the mantle of leadership, persuade others, think critically, engage with big ideas, improve their intellectual and academic skills...and have great fun. You can expect to encounter “fully immersed” RTTP players outside of the classrooms, too.

Reacting

My favorite aspect of the internship has been being part of the organization. The staff I work with have done a great job of immersing me into Hill Country Arts Foundation. My creative writing class is over a three week period. I think the creative writing is important for all age groups because being able to put your thoughts down to paper is not only freeing, it is a way of expressing one’s self. The Schreiner University Men’s Golf Team won the ASC title at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin in early April. “I’m really happy for the players. When we recruited them all, we said that they were going to be part of a championship team and that we were going to take the program to the national level,” said Ron Macosko, SU athletic director and men’s golf coach.” With this tournament title, Schreiner advanced to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament which was hosted at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, FL. The team finished 15th at the NCAA Tournament.

Schreiner University boasts four learning communities on campus: Vesalius, Honors Program, A.C.E. and Exodus. Freshmen Honors Living and Learning Community A living and learning environment allowing academically advanced students to live and study together, collaborate on ideas, participate in challenging research and pursue their academic goals.

Vesalius Living and Learning Community A small living and learning group for freshmen interested in health careers. Students live together, take classes and work with mentors from the health disciplines.

Exodus Project Learning Community and Campus Ministry A learning community for Christian freshmen from all denominations interested in engaging academics, discipleship, leadership and service to God together through retreats, low and high ropes, bible study and service.

ACE Learning Community A learning community dedicated to helping a select group of freshmen explore majors and careers while identifying values, interests and skills. www.schreiner.edu/academics/academic-support/learning-communities

The other side of Honors The Honors program has been so much fun. There were only 10 in my class, and that would be unheard of in a larger university. We have become very close, and we even conquered the Ropes Course at MO Ranch on an Honors retreat. This is huge since I’m scared to death of heights, but we’re all so close-knit. The Mountaineer Adventure Program in Montana was unlike any adventure I’ve ever experienced before. It pushed me beyond my limits and at the end of it all, I found out just how strong I really am.
