“Students feel free to walk into faculty members’ offices—office hours or not—and talk about anything. That’s the way we like it.” Dr. Diana Comuzzie Dean, Trull School of Sciences and Mathematics

Dr. Comuzzie has taught at Schreiner for 14 years. Although she teaches biology classes across the spectrum, she is partial to one area. “If I had to pick a favorite class, it would probably be animal behavior. That’s my discipline, and I get non-majors in that. They’re a lot of fun to teach. “Students actually get to work with scientific equipment here. When they graduate, they have confidence that they know what they’re doing. Student workers get plenty of experience—making up solutions, preparing labs, preparing and inoculating cultures. “Schreiner undergraduates get a lot of individual attention. By the time they’re juniors and seniors, we’re able to help each of them figure out what extracurricular activities they need to get where they’re going. That’s in addition to a very sound curriculum. “Of our students who applied to medical school while they were at Schreiner, 100 percent have been accepted—many to their first choice. “These numbers may not immediately impress people, but they should,” Dr. Comuzzie says. “Twelve percent of all our science graduates have gone to medical school. Twelve percent have gone to allied health profession schools, such as veterinary and dentistry. Twenty-five percent have gone to graduate school. The rest are working in their field as teachers, technicians or in government agencies.”

Schreiner’s turtle habitat... “It is exciting to have such an interesting space to study animals. It is also exciting to have a space that is generating enthusiasm from visitors, students and staff. We hope to use this turtle habitat to further our understanding of the cues male turtles use to court females. If you see something interesting happening in the turtle area, be sure to record it on the visitor’s log book!” Dr. Diana Comuzzie, professor of biology and Dean of the Trull School of Sciences and Mathematics

Trull School of Sciences and Mathematics The faculty of the Trull School of Sciences and Mathematics work to instill in students both appropriate knowledge and a deeper understanding through the liberal arts tradition that emphasizes free inquiry. Students are expected to master their discipline’s body of knowledge, but also to understand it as dynamic. Science and mathematics faculty work closely with students engaged in undergraduate research, a process that instills skills for a lifetime of inquiry and mastery. Broadly trained students are prepared for success in the workforce or in graduate or professional schools. ............................. Schreiner’s professors don’t just teach, they strive to light a fire in their students. For example, assistant professor of chemistry Dr. Kiley Miller (left) earned his bachelor’s degree at Schreiner in 2000, before going on to get his Ph.D. in bioengineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). The excellent undergraduate teaching he benefited from at SU inspired him to return to Schreiner as a professor to “pay it forward.”

....................................

Matt Jepson Pre-med Matt Jepson, from San Antonio, chose Schreiner University mainly for its pre-med program. “When I learned Schreiner had such a great record getting people into medical school, I knew I wanted to come here,” he said. It has turned out to be a win-win decision for both Matt and Schreiner. He has been admitted to the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP). JAMP was established by state legislation to provide support, including scholarships, for highly qualified students pursuing a career in medicine. Students who successfully fulfill program requirements as undergraduates are guaranteed acceptance to a state medical school upon graduation. He plans on going into orthopedic medicine. However, hitting the books doesn’t take up all his time. In addition to being an honor student, Matt is a Schreiner Ambassador, a residence assistant, sophomore vice president on the Student Senate, involved in Methodist Student Ministries and the Texas Academy of Science, and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity—among other activities. “I really like the enthusiastic professors here at Schreiner,” Matt said. “And I like that there are only professors teaching every course—no teaching assistants.”

TEACHING is the top priority

“I believe the opportunity to work closely with undergraduates is a good thing for faculty and a wonderful thing for students.” Dr. William Woods Professor of English

Dr. William Woods has been a member of the Schreiner University faculty since 1998, teaching everything from World Literature to Creative Writing and organizing Schreiner’s annual Popular Culture Symposium. He is a published writer, screenplay author and a poet. Woods is currently working on a textbook, “Crafting Your Short Fiction.” In spring 2007, Dr. Woods received two teaching awards: the Margaret Hosler Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Harriet Garret Award for Excellence in Teaching. Both awards are decided by students. “I love all my classes and I’m happy teaching a number of different ones. In World Literature, I really like grabbing those freshmen and teaching them about writing. And writers need to know about great literature. “We have undergraduates presenting papers at the National Undergraduate Literature Conference, publishing and inspiring each other. “There is a very close and dynamic relationship between professors and students here. I believe the opportunity to work with undergraduates is a good thing for faculty and a wonderful thing for students. We share a vision of what literature is, what scholarship is.”

The School of Liberal Arts Traditionally, the liberal arts are the foundation of all higher learning, giving a student the knowledge and learning skills to succeed in any field. Many liberal arts majors go on to graduate schools in their undergraduate fields, while others use their degrees to springboard into teaching, counseling, law school, creative arts or starting their own businesses. Stephanie Ramirez Psychology Like most new college students, Stephanie Ramirez ’07 came to Schreiner four years ago not all that sure what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. “Schreiner’s size and location were what first impressed me,” said Ramirez, whose high school principal encouraged her to look at Schreiner. “I felt that in a smaller school I’d have a chance to find out what I wanted.” Her experiences here have done that and more. Ramirez, winner of the Elmore Whitehurst Award for Excellence in Learning, will be going to graduate school working toward a doctorate, with a concentration in community counseling. “A lot of doors opened for me at Schreiner,” she said. “I was able to be in leadership positions here, and I think that made it easier to get into graduate school. At a larger school, I probably wouldn’t have gotten so far up the ladder.” Ramirez said one of the most valuable lessons she has learned here is a sense of responsibility. “My experience at Schreiner has opened my eyes to other possibilities and opportunities,” she said. Ramirez was honored for outstanding academic achievement in psychology as a junior, and spent a summer studying in Salamanca, Spain. She said studying abroad “contributed to my growth as an individual and as a stronger Hispanic woman. I will never forget it.” “I really gained a family here,” she said. “When I came here I wasn’t so confident. Schreiner gave me the tools to succeed.”

“The Schreiner experience extends well beyond their four years here—through a lifetime.” Dr. Mark Woodhull Assistant Professor of Business

Before becoming a teacher, Dr. Mark Woodhull had more than 35 years experience in international business and marketing and served as a United States Air Force officer. He has taught at Schreiner since 2001. “Schreiner is a very personal and personable place. I’ve taught at big schools with 300 students in a class and I’ve taught at Schreiner. I feel the rapport between teacher and student is closer here. “Schreiner professors know all their students’ names. That’s important. “I think students at Schreiner enjoy a closeness not only with professors but with other students as well. They make lifelong friends. Gregory Kirkham Business Administration Greg Kirkham ’07 has a high wattage smile and an energy level that, if harnessed, could probably power a large city. It has kept him going strong at Schreiner for the past four years and there’s no sign of it dimming after graduation. Kirkham, who was named Outstanding Business Student in 2006, said his focus in his business studies at Schreiner was management and marketing. He has plans for a career in the hospitality industry and will attend graduate school at the University of Houston. Kirkham said two things were largely responsible for his choosing Schreiner. “Originally, it was the Learning Support Services program,” said Kirkham, who has dysgraphia, a learning disorder that affects writing ability. “And I really liked my tour. There was someone on my tour who had 12 people in their graduating class. And there was another with 1,000. I just knew I could fit in somewhere. I knew there would be a place for me.” “I came from a large high school,” said Kirkham, who graduated high school in League City, Texas. “Schreiner gave me a chance to lead.”

Nearly 30 percent of Schreiner students play varsity-level athletics, competing for the University in the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference. At the end of the 2006-2007 academic year, 20 Schreiner athletes were named to All ASC West teams.

Autumn Vara Exercise Science “Like any other high school senior, I was ready to move on to the next phase of my life. For me, this meant going to a college that wasn’t in my hometown of Kerrville. My parents had suggested Schreiner University, and I was shocked! I mean, how could I expect to have a normal college experience, still living in my hometown? I reluctantly scheduled a visit to the campus. “As soon as I was introduced to the campus my mind immediately changed. I fell in love with everything Schreiner had to offer. The classes were small and personal, and the professors were approachable. Coming to Schreiner has been one of the best decisions I could have made for myself. “I am a member of the softball team, Student Senate, and serve as a student leader of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The family-like atmosphere and well-rounded people made it a wonderful place to start a new chapter in my life. Not only will I leave Schreiner with a great education, but also with an understanding of who I am and what I am capable of achieving.”

RECREATION Schreiner’s location in the Texas Hill Country provides an ideal setting for outdoor fun. Students get together to go swimming, fishing, canoeing or kayaking on the nearby Guadalupe River, and hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing or camping in the rugged hills. The Schreiner Outdoor Adventure Program coordinates its own assortment of activities, including wilderness camping in Montana, snow skiing in Colorado, hiking in Big Bend National Park and climbing Enchanted Rock; it even rents out camping equipment, kayaks, mountain bikes and other sports gear. The Campus Recreation office oversees plenty of intramural action in soccer, basketball, volleyball and flag football. It also sponsors special intramural events such as dodgeball and kickball, swimming events such as Divein Movies and the 150-lap Swimfest, as well as fitness programs and outdoor trips.

living on campus CAMPUS LIFE At Schreiner, what you learn outside the classroom is often as important as what you learn inside it. Living on campus, either in the residence halls or on-campus apartments, will provide you with the opportunity to grow, to gain independence, to establish enduring friendships and to learn more about yourself. Most students live on campus, and a big reason for that is our active, friendly community. Whether you make your home in Pecan Grove, The Oaks, Trull, Flato, L.A. Schreiner or Delaney, you’ll enjoy on-campus living with all the amenities: cable access, telephone, wireless Internet connection and more. Even better, each residence hall and apartment complex has its own character that reflects the personalities of its residents. If you’re looking for fun off-campus, Kerrville is home to an assortment of shops, restaurants, music events, theaters, and museums. And San Antonio, with all of its world-class attractions, such as theme parks, museums, professional sports and music venues, is less than an hour away.

CAMPUS MINISTRY Mind, body and spirit are all important at Schreiner, and Campus Ministry is here to help you find—or continue on—your spiritual path. There are many faith-based campus groups that meet regularly, and all students are invited to participate no matter where they are on their journey of faith.

The Rev. Gini Norris-Lane, (center) Schreiner’s campus minister, enjoys getting together with students at the local coffeehouse or at her home on campus.

During a recent summer break, a group of Schreiner students visited the Taizé community in the southeast of France. Founded by Brother Roger in 1940, the ecumenical community is devoted to a life of simplicity, prayer and hospitality. During World War II, this hospitality extended to hiding refugees. The 15 students were deeply moved by the experience, and its effect on their spiritual lives.

Heather Lee Campus Ministry Heather Lee is a junior at Schreiner University majoring in exercise science. Clearly enjoying the varied leadership opportunities at SU, she is very active in Campus Ministry and is president of Baptist Student Ministry, as well as a member of the Student Senate, a residence advisor, peer advisor and an Honors student. “When you’re a freshman, Campus Ministry is an easy way to meet people quickly. “Gini [the Rev. Gini Norris-Lane, Schreiner University campus minister] gives students a lot of opportunities for leadership and challenges you to explore new ideas and your beliefs. She’s opened her home to students so they can connect personally to her and her family. “Baptist Student Ministry meets for fellowship, a short devotional, a time for students to share and eat dessert. “My sister came to Schreiner, too, and I wanted to stay close to home, which is about 35 miles away in Boerne. Schreiner gave me the opportunity to be independent—but still able to go home and do my laundry.

“Being at Schreiner has been incredible. If I had to do it over, I’d choose Schreiner again, any day of the week.”
