Fall2024

FROM THE PRESIDENT

AlthoughtheweatherhasyettomakeusfeellikeFallhas arrived, thecalendarillustratesthatwearewellintothe season. That means that we have passed the halfway point for the Fall academic term, and students already are looking towards the submission of final projects and the successful completion of final exams This is the tempooffallsemesters:inAugust, itseemslikeyouhave all the time in the world, but when November rolls around, you realize just how little time is left in the semester.

Butithasbeenagood–andfun!–fallsemester.Weweredelightedtoannouncethatournew first-year student enrollment was up this year by 16% and overall enrollment was up by 10%. Thisisespeciallygoodnewswhennationaldataindicatesthatcollegeenrollmenthasdropped by5%overall.ThisisagoodreminderthatweallneedtobeambassadorsforSchreinerallthe time. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell the strangers sitting next to you at lunch –“somethinggoodisgoingonatSchreiner, socheckitout!”

Ofcourse, thefacultyandstaffatSchreinerhavenotsimplybeenwaitingtoseewhathappens with enrollment; on the contrary, they have been developing new programs – both curricular andco-curricular–towhichtheybelievestudentswillbeattracted Thatworkhaspaidoffwith new record enrollments in aviation and engineering, and the successful launch of our new agriculture program. I suspect most of you have heard by now that football is returning to Schreiner, and we will play our first competitive season in fall 2026. Our new coach has been hired, andhealreadyisrecruitingstudentswhowanttoplayfootballonceitisunderway.

WealsowerepleasedtolearnthatNiche–apopularonlinerankingofcollegesanduniversities – identified Schreiner as having one of the best college campuses in America and the #1 best college dorms in Texas. For those of you whose point of reference is only Delaney Dorm and FlatoHall, youneedtocomebacktocampusandseeFaulknerHallandBaldwinHalltoseewhat allthepositivefussisabout.

Regardless of the motivation, I do hope you will return to Schreiner sometime this academic year–andpleaseletTammiknowthatyou’recoming.Ifwecanarrangeit,Iwouldlovetoshow you what is new and hear about your time at Schreiner Institute, College, or University. Our Schreineris–andwillalwaysremain–yourSchreiner, too.

Don Milligan ‘62 Well, I am fully retired for many years now. Still in Lakeland, Florida, and still riding my Harley. The positive part is that I took the learning from Schreiner HS, and college, put it with my Army years, and have had a successful life that is still funding my lifestyle Am still going strong at 81, and enjoying the Florida sun, along with the life of the area I go to Key West for Fantasy Fest (photos to the left) Sneaking out on weekends and heading for Bandera for the honkey tonks was one of my "events" that kept the demons at bay in my day. Beer was our preference, and the other stuff was not for us. Well, a little Jack Daniels every once in awhile, but that was for special occasions.

Now, it is time to go do my job of mowing the grass before I put a steak on to ease the aches of pushing the mower Remember, "work when it's time to work, and play when it's time to play, and never confuse the two!"

Dr. Kara Hensley ‘19 I married Robert Hensley who graduated from schreiner with his BSN in 2020. We’ve been married 3 years now.

I graduated from medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2023. I am doing my residency in Family Medicine at Texas A&M University I will be doing full spectrum family medicine with obstetrics and endoscopy and hopefully returning somewhere in the hill country to practice once I graduate residency
