Editorial Dear reader,

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

When Bernhard Schott established his publishing house in the tranquil and yet thriving Electorate of Mainz in 1770, nobody could have imagined that the company founded by the 25-year-old copper engraver would be celebrating its anniversary as a globally active business 250 years later. Bernhard Schott’s sons laid down the essential foundations for success at an early stage by extending their publishing activities across Europe and even overseas at the turn of the 19th century.

Since then, internationality has played a prominent role in the publishing house’s programme and also in our daily work. We have composers from over 50 nations on our books and enjoy nurturing regular contacts with our colleagues abroad, which have developed into friendships. Cooperation within the countries of the EU has always been especially uncomplicated. We at Schott are therefore deeply saddened by the developments concerning Brexit, which have the potential to create real economic and practical problems across our industry.

We find it extraordinary that our German and UK offices must now plan for possible trade restrictions between our countries, when we have enjoyed a seamless collaboration for so many years.

One of Schott’s most significant works, the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven (whose 250th anniversary we will also be celebrating next year), has advanced to become the official European anthem.

The emphatic text of the final movement proclaims ‘Alle Menschen werden Brüder’ [All men shall be as brothers]. There is nothing that connects us so easily and naturally across all borders than music and the joy we experience through it. For this reason, we are grateful to the performers, composers, teachers, pupils and all other individuals who share with us the common belief in the connecting power of music.

als Bernhard Schott seinen Verlag 1770 im beschaulichen, aber blühenden Kurfürstentum Mainz gründete, konnte niemand ahnen, dass die Firma des zwanzigjährigen Kupferstechers 250 Jahre später ihr Jubiläum als weltweit tätiges Unternehmen feiern würde. Einen wichtigen Grundstein für den Erfolg legten schon die Söhne von Bernhard Schott: Sie dehnten ihre verlegerischen Aktivitäten bereits um die Wende zum 19. Jahrhundert nach Europa und sogar nach Übersee aus.

Seither prägt die Internationalität das Verlagsprogramm ebenso wie unsere tägliche Arbeit. Wir betreuen Komponisten aus über 50 Ländern und genießen es, mit unseren Kollegen im Ausland in regelmäßigem, freundschaftlichen Kontakt zu sein. Besonders unkompliziert ist die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb der EU-Staaten. Umso mehr schmerzt uns bei Schott die britische Brexit-Entscheidung, die einem kleinen mittelständischen Unternehmen wie unserem enorme wirtschaftliche und praktische Probleme bescheren kann.

Unvorstellbar, dass bald wieder Zölle und Grenzen den Austausch zwischen Großbritannien und unserem Mainzer Mutterhaus erschweren sollen.

Eines der bedeutendsten Schott-Werke, die 9. Symphonie von Ludwig van Beethoven (dessen 250. Geburtstag wir ebenfalls nächstes Jahr feiern), hat es zur offiziellen Europa-Hymne gebracht. „Alle Menschen werden Brüder“, heißt es im Schlusssatz emphatisch. Nichts verbindet so leicht und selbstverständlich über alle Grenzen hinweg wie die Musik und die Freude, die wir durch sie erleben. Deshalb gilt unser großer Dank heute einmal allen Interpreten, Komponisten, allen Lehrenden und Lernenden, einfach all jenen Menschen, die mit uns an die verbindende Kraft der Musik glauben.

This March, the large-scale orchestral work Roland Furieux by Augusta Holmès will receive its first performance in modern times to mark 2019’s International Women’s Day. Holmès (1847–1903) was a French-born composer of Irish descent, who studied with César Franck and in 1895, became the first woman to have an opera premiered in Paris. While she enjoyed great acclaim in her lifetime, much of her catalogue remains undiscovered.

Zu den Feierlichkeiten des Internationalen Frauentags am 8. März erlebt das großformatige Orchesterwerk Roland Furieux von Augusta Holmès über ein Jahrhundert nach seiner Entstehung seine Uraufführung. Die mit irischen Wurzeln in Frankreich geborene Holmès (1847–1903) studierte bei César Franck. Sie war die erste Frau, von der im Jahr 1895 eine Oper in Paris uraufgeführt wurde.

Der Rosenkavalier presents problems of space and size of required forces to smaller theatres, though the work contains numerous passages in chamber music style and a relatively modest cast of singers. In my reduction for double woodwinds, two trumpets, two trombones, and a tuba, I have succeeded in retaining the primarily three-voice instrumental texture of the original orchestral score, and have replaced missing instruments with an instrumental tone as close as possible to the original. Richard Strauss’s amazingly balanced tone colouring remains unchanged.

Hardly any notes had to be omitted; the score sounds in its original form. Thomas Dorsch Der Rosenkavalier stellt kleinere Theater vor Platz- und Personalprobleme, obwohl das Werk viele kammermusikalische Passagen und eine nicht allzu opulente Sängerbesetzung aufweist. In der Reduktion auf doppeltes Holz, zwei Trompeten, zwei Posaunen und Tuba habe ich den überwiegend dreistimmigen Instrumentalsatz der Originalpartitur erhalten, indem ich ein fehlendes Instrument immer in einer möglichst identischen oder sich am Originalklang orientierenden Instrumentalfarbe ergänze. Die phantastisch balancierten Farben von Richard Strauss bleiben bestehen. Es müssen tatsächlich fast keine Töne entfallen; die Partitur erklingt in ihrer originalen Gestalt.

Jörg Widmann and the librettist Peter Sloterdijk have produced a new interpretation of the myth of Babylon. Two figures represent contrasting principles: Inanna stands for the Babylonian joy in sensuality whereas the figure of the Soul is a representation of child-like Platonic love. ‘I would claim that the sounds of this city are not so very different from the sounds of our time: the co-existence and overlapping of such highly different cultures, peoples, and religions also creates a wild and fascinating simultaneity of things high and low, oscillating between an impassioned sacred tone and the sphere of triviality.’ (Jörg Widmann) After t he w orld premiere o f t he w ork i n 2012, the composer undertook a complete revision of his composition. Widmann reduced the strings and added a glass harmonica to the orchestra. He intensified the plot through cuts and musical additions and has given the characters greater depth through the creation of new arias.

Widmann hat die Streicher reduziert und das Orchester durch eine Glasharmonika verstärkt.

Mit Strichen und musikalischen Ergänzungen verdichtete er die Handlung und hat mit neuen Arien den Figuren zusätzliche Tiefe gegeben.

Duo Concertante was written for my colleagues James and Deborah Dunham on the occasion of their 35th anniversary and explores the timbral combinations of viola and double bass from their dark lyrical qualities to their more bravura possibilities. The work contains five brief movements of contrasting character. The first movement functions as a short prelude, with the viola and bass combining to form alternating high and low harmonies and trading off solo lines. The second movement is a playful scherzo while the third movement is the central, lyrical movement with undulating natural harmonic tremolos and a rhythmically driving interruptive middle section. The fourth movement consists of quickly bowed natural harmonics with fleeting rhythmic tremolos on both instruments while the final movement contains rapidly driving music in constant motion, interrupted twice by cadenza-like free sections which are non-synchronized. The two instruments then come together for the final push to the end.

Duo Concertante habe ich für meine Freunde James und Deborah Dunham zur Feier ihres 35. Hochzeitstags komponiert. Das Werk nutzt die unterschiedlichen Kombinationen von Viola und Kontrabass mit ihren dunklen, lyrischen Klangfarben, lässt aber auch Raum für Virtuosität. Das Stück besteht aus fünf kurzen, kontrastreichen Sätzen. Es beginnt mit einem kurzen Prélude, in dem Viola und Kontrabass unterschiedlich hoch und tief spielen und die Melodien zwischen den beiden Stimmen wechseln. Der zweite Satz kommt als verspieltes Scherzo daher, während der dritte Satz – mit wogenden Flageolett-Tremolos und einem rhythmisch-treibenden Mittelstück – den zentralen, lyrischen Teil von Duo Concertante darstellt. Der vierte Satz besteht aus schnell gespielten Flageoletts mit Tremolos auf beiden Instrumenten, wobei der abschließende, sich in konstanter Bewegung befindende Satz von zwei kadenzartig-freien Passagen unterbrochen wird.

Martin is only able to process his horror at this incident many years later.

Sie bemerken nicht, dass sich die Stimmung im Dorf verändert. Die Abneigung gilt Scheckis Familie, weil sie anders, fremd ist. Eines frühen Morgens holt sie die Fremdenpolizei. Erst viele Jahre später kann Martin sein Entsetzen darüber verarbeiten.

Following Martin Grubinger’s performances in the world premieres of Fazıl Say’s Variations for two pianos and percussion (2013) and the cantata The Bells (2014), the composer has created a unique concerto especially for the percussionist. The four movements in this highly energetic concerto are systematically named after the specific percussion instruments being used: I. Waterphone, II. Rototoms – Timpani, III. Vibraphone – Campana and IV. Marimba – Boobams. Although no Turkish instruments are used, the final movement, with instructions such as ‘in Istanbul gypsy style’ and ‘Slow Belly Dance’, displays unmistakeable Anatolian characteristics.

Nachdem Martin Grubinger bereits als Interpret bei den Uraufführungen von Fazıl Says Variations for two pianos and percussion (2013) sowie der Kantate The Bells (2014) mitwirkte, hat ihm der Komponist nun ein eigenes Schlagzeugkonzert gewidmet. In dem energiegeladenen Concerto sind die vier Sätze systematisch nach den jeweils aktiven Percussion-Instrumenten benannt: I. Waterphone, II. Rototoms – Timpani, III. Vibraphone – Campana und IV. Marimba – Boobams.

Obwohl keine türkischen Instrumente zum Einsatz kommen, trägt vor allem der letzte Satz mit Anweisungen wie „in Istanbul gypsy style“ und „Slow Belly Dance“ eindeutig anatolische Züge.

Gavin Bryars has written a number of vocal works using old or lesser-used languages. For his new choral work for Les Éléments, based in Toulouse, he sets Occitan, the language of much troubadour poetry, having spent some time in the Hautes-Pyrénées where Occitan is still spoken. This also builds on his experience of working with early music vocal ensembles, as well as extending further his long-standing relationship (established in 1984) with Percussions Claviers de Lyon who formed the instrumental ensemble for his recent chamber opera The Collected Works of Billy the Kid.

John Casken Obwohl ich viele Werke geschrieben habe, gab es vor meiner neuen Suite nur zwei für Piano solo: The Haunting Bough [Spukender Ast] und Pleasure Ground [Vergnügungspark]. Ich entschied mich, beide in Six Wooded Pieces [Sechs hölzerne Stücke] zu integrieren und das Thema Bäume und Holz zu erweitern: The Haunting Bough umrahmt die Suite als ersten und letzten Satz; Pleasure Ground wird in Swinging Bough [Schwingender Ast] umbenannt. Außerdem wollte ich mein Interesse an Poesie, Geschichte und Gestalt von Landschaft vertiefen.

of the Navajo concept of ‘Hozho’, uniting harmony, health and beauty in a single entity. Luc Petton’s choreography incorporates living animals (an eagle, owls and wolves) which act onstage alongside the dancers and singers. At the end of the ritual which evokes mythological figures of the Navajo, the animals remain apprehensive: what new worlds will human beings create to save the earth and avoid catastrophe?

Thierry Pécou Diese Partitur entstand aus meiner Zusammenarbeit mit der in Arizona ansässigen Navajo-Dichterin Laura Tohe. Mit unserer Lesart der heiligen Geschichten und Heilungs-Zeremonien der Navajo-Indianer wollten wir die dramatischen Wunden offenlegen, die der Mensch auf „Nahasdzáán“ [Mutter Erde] verursacht hat und gleichzeitig die Kraft des Navajo-Konzepts „Hozho“ zeigen, das Harmonie, Gesundheit und Schönheit in sich vereint. Luc Pettons Choreografie schließt lebende Tiere (Adler, Eulen, Wölfe) ein, die zusammen mit Tänzern und Sängern auf der Bühne agieren. Am Ende des Rituals, das mythologische Figuren der Navajo heraufbeschwört, sind die Tiere besorgt: Welche neuen Welten werden die Menschen erschaffen, um die Erde zu retten und der Katastrophe zu entkommen?

Gavin Bryars hat eine Reihe von Vokalwerken auf alte und kaum mehr gebräuchliche Sprachen komponiert. Für sein neues Chorstück, das er dem Vokalensemble Les Éléments aus Toulouse widmete, setzte er sich mit Okzitanisch, der Sprache der Dichtkunst der Troubadoure auseinander. Dafür verbrachte er einige Zeit in den Zentralpyrenäen, wo Okzitanisch noch immer gesprochen wird. Bryars wurde bei Mistral von seinen Erfahrungen mit Vokalensembles Alter Musik und der langjährigen Zusammenarbeit mit Percussions Claviers de Lyon beeinflusst. Mit diesem Schlagzeugensemble erarbeitete er zuletzt seine Kammeroper The Collected Works of Billy the Kid.

Salome Uncovered The Critical Edition of the original Salome

R

ichard Strauss’ masterpiece will be published as the first opera volume of the new Critical Edition in April, thereby making available fully-corrected orchestra material augmented by essential performance-related details which can officially be used for performance from 1 January 2020 onwards.

Major sources for the research team in Munich were the autograph score, the first print, and piano reduction of the opera. The editor, Claudia Heine, was able to establish that the initial performance material was engraved under great pressures of time (in 1905, Strauss was still completing the ‘Dance of the Seven Veils’ for the premiere in December of the

same year), and that numerous details were only incorporated into the second edition.

This second print provided an authoritative source for researchers in all areas where questions and doubts had been present.

The additions and corrections in the new material affect accidentals, legato slurs and metronome markings. Individual note pitches in the orchestral parts and prominent passages in the solo vocal parts were also corrected.

The servant in the palace of Herod previously known as ‘Manassah’ is now given his proper name Manasseh (Herod: ‘Manasseh – zündet Fackeln an!’ [Manasseh – light the torches!]).

Important augmentations in the musical text include articulation signs, dynamic markings, and so-called duration marks, which can be used, for example, to indicate the length of a diminuendo. In the autograph, Strauss notated only shorter crescendo markings for the brass instruments. The new edition, therefore, provides a greater degree of transparency, enabling conductors and orchestras to produce a more differentiated sound.

The new musical text is accompanied by valuable information on the history of the work.

One example is the so-called term ‘Holz- und Strohinstrument’ [wood and straw instrument] which Strauss interpreted not as the modern

xylophone, but an African equivalent in which simple wooden bars were fastened by strings, whose tone would contribute to the atmosphere of the work.

In certain passages, Strauss deliberately writes notes going beyond the ranges of individual orchestral instruments. Heine was able to identify a passage in correspondence in which Strauss demonstrated that he was well aware of the unplayability of these passages, but insisted on this notation to retain the otherwise demolished integrity of the motif within its musical context.

In our new score of Salome, we have eliminated a wealth of errors contained in the previous material in circulation. We have made around 2,000 alterations and clarifications in Salome – an average of 5–6 on each page of musical text containing a grand total of 3,257 bars. We undertook research on the complex printing history of this work in order to consult the verifiable sources authorised by Richard Strauss.

Here it was Strauss’s autograph score which played a prominent role, helping us to recognise how Strauss, in his role as an experienced conductor, was able to regulate the orchestral sound through precise dynamic indications, which had been reproduced inaccurately in all previous printed editions. Collaboration with experienced musicians remains a vital factor both for us as editors, and for me personally. I was therefore overjoyed that the play-though of the opera at Cologne Opera with its GMD François-Xavier Roth, Arne Willimczik and the Gürzenich-Orchester in the autumn of 2018 was such a resounding success, enabling us to eliminate the very last few errors.

Rund 2.000 Änderungen und Präzisierungen haben wir an der Salome vorgenommen – im Schnitt 5–6 pro Notenseite in insgesamt 3.257 Takten. Für die Edition recherchierten wir die komplexe Druckgeschichte, um die nachweislich von Richard Strauss Dr. Claudia Heine / autorisierten Quellen zu Rate zu Ludwig-Maximiliansziehen. Eine besondere Rolle spielUniversität München te Strauss’ Partiturautograph: Es half zu erkennen, wie Strauss als erfahrener Dirigent den Orchesterklang mittels präziser Dynamikangaben steuerte. Das wurde in den bisherigen Drucken nur ungenau wiedergegeben. Die Zusammenarbeit mit ausführenden Musikern liegt uns als Herausgeber und auch mir persönlich am Herzen. Es hat mich daher sehr gefreut, dass das Probespiel im Herbst 2018 an der Oper Köln mit GMD François-Xavier Roth, Arne Willimczik und dem Gürzenich-Orchester ein großer Erfolg war und wir gemeinsam die letzten Fehler ausmerzen konnten.

Aufführungsmaterial unter großem Zeitdruck gestochen wurde (Strauss schrieb im Sommer 1905 noch den „Schleiertanz“ für die im Dezember angesetzte Premiere) und viele Änderungen erst in die zweite Auflage einflossen. Der Zweitdruck diente den Wissenschaftlern in allen Zweifelsfragen als maßgebliche Quelle.

Die Korrekturen im neuen Material betreffen Vorzeichen, Dynamikangaben, Legatobögen und Metronomangaben. Auch Tonhöhen im Orchester und an prominenten Stellen der Solistenpartien wurden berichtigt.

Der immer als „Manassah“ titulierte Diener im Palast des Herodes bekommt seinen richtigen Namen Manasseh zurück (Herodes: „Manasseh – zündet Fackeln an!“).

Wesentliche Ergänzungen im Notentext sind außerdem Artikulationszeichen und sogenannte Geltungsstriche. Sie zeigen an, wie lange zum Beispiel ein Diminuendo dauern

soll. Strauss hat im Autograph häufig kürzere Crescendo-Gabeln in den Blechbläsern gesetzt. Die neue Ausgabe ist damit transparenter und erlaubt Dirigenten und Orchestern, ein differenzierteres Klangbild zu erzeugen.

Neben dem neuen Notentext liegen wichtige Informationen aus der Werkhistorie vor.

So verstand Strauss unter dem sogenannten Holz- und Strohinstrument nicht das heutige Xylophon, sondern ein afrikanisches Äquivalent, bei dem einfache Holzlatten auf Seilen befestigt waren, deren urwüchsiger Klang zur „orientalischen“ Sphäre beitragen sollte.

An einigen Stellen überschreitet Strauss mit Absicht den Tonumfang der Orchesterinstrumente. Heine konnte durch eine Briefstelle nachweisen, dass sich Strauss der Unspielbarkeit bewusst war, aber zugunsten der Integrität des sonst zerstörten Motiv-Zusammenhangs auf seine Notation bestand.

Back to the French roots of Salomé and Strauss’ lyrical Salome for Dresden

scar Wilde originally wrote Salome in French and had the work published in France to bypass English censorship. Richard Strauss used the English translation of Salome as the basis for his German libretto. When creating the French-language version of his opera, he returned, however, to the original version of the drama which, by including major revisions to the vocal part, was to transform the work into a ‘proper French opera’. In addition, he consulted Romain Rolland for stylistic advice.

For the Semperoper in Dresden, Strauss revised the orchestral parts to enable singers with less powerful voices to sing the opera. His vision of Salome’s role always remained a lyrical

rather than a highly dramatic vocal part. Both the French version and the so-called Dresden Retouches will be published in the second subvolume of the Strauss Edition in 2020.

The home of the Critical Edition of the works of Richard Strauss is the Institute for Musicology at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. The research centre receives support from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and is under the supervision of the musicologist Professor Dr Hartmut Schick. Volumes of Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier and Ariadne auf Naxos will be published during the next few years.

Die Kritische Ausgabe der Werke von Richard Strauss ist am Institut für Musikwissenschaft der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München angesiedelt. Die Forschungsstelle wird von der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften getragen und von dem Musikwissenschaftler Professor Dr. Hartmut Schick betreut. Erst danach erstellte er eine revidierte Übersetzung seines Theaterstücks auf Englisch, deren deutsche Übersetzung Richard Strauss als Vorlage für den deutschen Libretto-Text diente. Für die französischsprachige Version der Salome kam der Komponist jedoch auf die französische Urfassung des Dramas zurück, die dem Werk durch eine Neugestaltung in den Gesangsstimmen den Charakter einer „richtigen französischen Oper“ verschaffen sollte. Dabei ließ sich Strauss stilistisch von Romain Rolland beraten.

Für die Dresdener Semperoper retuschierte Strauss den Orchestersatz, um eine Sängerbesetzung mit leichteren Stimmen zu ermöglichen. Vor allem schwebte ihm dabei eine lyrische statt einer hochdramatischen Ge-

The composer also blends new and old characteristics in Pavane, placing a central focus on the contrast between the cor anglais and a saxophone quartet.

Whatever the explanation, the year that the Schott music publishing house was founded coincides with the birth of one of its most famous composers. When Ludwig van Beethoven came into this world in 1770, Bernhard Schott made the announcement that he ‘had newly established his own music engraving and printing business in the Rosengasse within the city of Mainz in the electorate of Mainz eight days after Epiphany in the year of our Lord 1770 at precisely eight o’clock in the morning.’

This means that in 2020 we will not only be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven, but simultaneously the 250 th anniversary of the Schott publishing house.

What is more, the charisma of our house would not have been the same if two composers whose anniversaries also fall next year had not both had their works published exclusively

by Schott: Paul Hindemith and Carl Orff (125).

There are many different reasons to celebrate – and what better way to do so than with music!

War es eine günstige Konstellation der Sterne, eine Laune der Fortuna oder einfach Zufall? Jedenfalls fällt das Gründungsjahr des Musikverlages Schott genau mit dem Geburtsjahr seines berühmtesten Komponisten zusammen. Während Ludwig van Beethoven 1770 das Licht der Welt erblickte, teilte Bernhard Schott mit, dass er „[…] acht Tage nach Epiphanias im Jahre des Herrn 1770 vormittags genau 8 Uhr in der Stadt Mainz, im Kurfürstentum Mainz ein eigenes Geschäft für Notenstich und -druck in der Rosengasse aufgemacht habe.“ So kommt es, dass wir 2020 als das Beethoven-Jahr schlechthin begehen und zugleich 250 Jahre Schott-Verlag feiern dürfen.

Die Strahlkraft des Hauses wäre heute nicht die Gleiche, hätten nicht zwei Komponisten ihre Werke exklusiv bei Schott verlegen lassen, deren Geburtstage sich im nächsten Jahr ebenfalls jähren: Paul Hindemith und Carl Orff (125). Viele Gründe zu feiern, und das am besten – mit Musik!

85 Bernard Rands 2 March 2019 Musical America has referred to Bernard Rands as ‘a composer with a poet’s sensibility and a painterly love of color and line.’ Rands’s Canti del Sole won the Pulitzer Prize in Music and his Le Tambourin received the Kennedy Center Friedheim Award. Chanticleer’s recording of Canti d’Amor won a Grammy Award and Boston Modern Orchestra Project’s recording of the Canti Trilogy was released to universal critical acclaim. Rands’s current commissions include new works for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His music is published exclusively by Schott Music Corporation. We extend our best wishes to Bernard Rands on the occasion of his 85th birthday!

First Nights / Premieren The premieres at the beginning of spring display the entire spectrum of our stage works ranging from romantic grand opera to ballet chanté to satirical topical opera.

We would like to highlight the most recent compositions: Thierry Pécou’s Nahasdzáán in the Glittering World will be premiered in Rouen and Jörg Widmann’s Babylon will be performed in a revised version at the Oper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Additional recent Schott works featured in the spring include The Importance of Being Earnest by Gerald Barry, Futari Shizuka by Toshio Hosokawa, Medea

by Aribert Reimann, and Klaus Simon’s version of Maurice Ravel’s L’Heure espagnole for chamber ensemble. A new composition is also of interest in the field of ballet: Tim Plegge is the first choreographer to create a ballet for Pēteris Vasks’ third – and latest – symphony.

The world premiere of Die Frau ohne Schatten took place exactly one hundred years ago on 10 October. This musically stunning opera represents the pinnacle of the Late Romantic art of instrumentation and was a high point in the artistic collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal who worked in parallel on the text and music from 1911 to 1915. Hofmannsthal deliberately oriented the libretto, which was a free adaptation of Goethe’s Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten [Conversations of German Emigrants], to Mozart’s The Magic Flute: two contrasting couples have to prove themselves through human-moralistic trials in a fantasy world. The iconic opera is not merely an escape into inner magic worlds around the time of the First World War, but is more like a fairy tale written under the impression of nascent psychoanalysis.

Am 10. Oktober jährt sich die Uraufführung von Die Frau ohne Schatten zum 100. Mal. Die klanggewaltige Oper gilt als Gipfelwerk spätromantischer Instrumentationskunst und als ein Höhepunkt der künstlerischen Zusammenarbeit von Richard Strauss und Hugo von Hofmannsthal, die von 1911 bis 1915 parallel an Text und Musik arbeiteten. Hofmannsthal lehnte das frei auf Goethes Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten basierende Libretto bewusst an Mozarts Die Zauberflöte an: In einer phantastischen Welt bewähren sich zwei kontrastierende Paare in menschlich-moralischen Prüfungen. Die symbolträchtige Oper ist keine naive Flucht in innere Zauberwelten zu Zeiten des Ersten Weltkriegs, sondern vielmehr ein Märchen, geschrieben unter dem Eindruck der aufkommenden Psychoanalyse.
