The opera takes us to New York City in the late 1980s – when five Black and Latino teenagers were falsely accused of rape and assault, and coerced into confession. Each of the five teenagers was sentenced to years in maximum security prisons. The Central Park Five ist eine wahre Geschichte. Tragicomedy with music, a grotesque opera (2023) based on the novel ‘The Melancholy of Resistance’ by László Krasznahorkai Libretto by Mari Mezei and Kinga Keszthelyi (Hun.) 95’

Two young parents become homeless and the father commits a murder in order to find a place to stay. Peter Eötvös tells the story in bleak Nordic tones in the style of a ballad. The author of the original novel, Jon Fosse was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature in 2023. Also available in German. Zwei junge Eltern werden obdachlos, der Vater mordet, um eine Bleibe zu fi nden. Peter Eötvös erzählt in dunklen, nordischen Farben im Stile einer Ballade. Der Autor der Romanvorlage Jon Fosse erhielt 2023 den LiteraturNobelpreis. Auch in deutscher Sprache erhältlich.

Valuska is a murky tragi-comedy based on Lázló Krasznahorkai’s novel The Melancholy of Resistance which was written during the collapse of the Eastern Bloc in 1989. ‘Valuska, the pure-hearted young man, becomes the victim of a manipulative society in the shadow of a whale’ (Peter Eötvös). Also available in a German translation.

A group of explorers is struggling through the Antarctic and come across a girl who was cut off in the ice in the 19th century. The Antarctic has preserved the geological history of the earth like a book and can now tell its own story: ’In a time when anthropogenic climate change is destabilising all aspects of life, Antarctica becomes a stage for a drama of the future.’ (Mary Finsterer) Eine Forschungsgruppe kämpft sich durch die Antarktis. Auf ihrer Expedition stoßen die Forscher auf ein Mädchen, das im 19. Jahrhundert vom Eis umschlossen wurde. What happens to Aida and Radamès after the end of Guiseppe Verdi’s opera? The two protagonists are still alive, but have been buried alive and are ultimately abandoned to their fate which is almost certainly death. Stefan Heucke continues the story with Verdi’s musical material but adapted to his own musical language. Was ist mit Aida und Radamès nach dem Ende von Guiseppe Verdis Oper geschehen? Michael Kohlhaas compulsively desires justice at all costs despite his own wrongdoings which bring catastrophe on himself and others. He is ultimately successful in his original claim for justice which he addressed to the emperor, even though this results in the death sentence for his actions. The chief protagonist is sung by a tenor throughout the drama whereas the other 13 roles are undertaken alternately by a baritone and a mezzo-soprano. All three ‘protagonists’ are simultaneously narrators who also recite texts from the novella. These texts can also be undertaken by actors. Stefan Heucke Michael Kohlhaas, der um jeden Preis Gerechtigkeit will, dabei Böses tut und sich und andere in die Katastrophe reißt, bekommt schließlich vom Kaiser in seinem ursprünglichen Ersuchen recht und wird für das, was er getan hat, zum Tode verurteilt. Die Hauptfigur wird durchgängig von einem Tenor gesungen, Bariton und Mezzosopranistin hingegen schlüpfen in 13 unterschiedliche Rollen. Alle drei Spieler:innen sind außerdem Erzählende, die Texte aus der Novelle sprechen. Man kann diese Texte auch von Schauspieler:innen sprechen lassen. Stalker is an immersive audio opera during which the audience, equipped with hi-fi headphones, is free to wander around. The adaptation of the famous fi lm by Andrei Tarkowsky transports us to a present which seems to have fallen out of time: the Earth has been invaded by an extraterrestrial civilisation. The contact zone which has been cleared and fenced off by the military becomes the location of fatal paranormal phenomenons. In the centre of this area, a ‘room’ is said to exist and anyone entering the room will be granted a long-cherished wish. A respected professor and a successful writer pay a stalker, a type of mystic guide who is familiar with the zone, to lead them to the chamber. Thierry Pécou

Based on a poetic adaptation of the Indian epic poem Mahabharata, the opera Until the Lions tells the story of Princess Amba who in the reincarnation as a man takes revenge on her enemy. The work explores the images of gender and lends a voice to the victims of violence and war. Lili Elbe is the fi rst full scale opera about a transgender person and composed for a trans opera singer in the title role. Lili Elbe (1882– 1931) was one of the first persons to undergo gender aﬃ rmation surgery. Lili before transition was known as the acclaimed Danish landscape painter Einar Wegener. Lili Elbe ist die erste abendfüllende Oper über und für eine Transgenderperson in der Hauptrolle. Anno Schreier commemorates the brilliant mathematician Alan Turing, considered to be the pioneer of programming and AI, whose aptitude for deciphering was decisive for the outcome of World War II. During his lifetime, he was however persecuted because of his homosexuality and driven to commit suicide. On a musical level, Schreier combines minimalistic patterns with influences from electronic pop music. Anno Schreier würdigt den genialen Mathematiker Alan Turing, der als Pionier der Programmierung und KI gilt und mit seinen Dechiffrierkünsten den Zweiten Weltkrieg mitentschied, zu Lebzeiten jedoch aufgrund seiner Homosexualität verfolgt und in den Suizid getrieben wurde. Musikalisch verbindet Schreier minimalistische Patterns mit Einflüssen aus elektronischer Popmusik. The opera Buddenbrooks was not conceived as a museum for nineteenth-century German bourgeoisie; on the contrary, it was my objective to reveal what Thomas Mann has to say in his magnum opus to audiences of our time. However, I was nevertheless completely as-

tounded at the similarities between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries with regard to each era’s overarching themes, visions and struggles. The poems of Miyazawa Kenji explore the death of his sister to tuberculosis (also the cause of his own untimely death) alongside a passion for the rough landscapes of Northern Japan. Put down in small notebooks as he wandered the woods, his poems remain almost unknown outside of his home country. I discovered the English translation several years ago and was drawn to his meditations on mortality, mirrored in nature. The work is dedicated to Dennis Russell Davies on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The Art of Leaving is part lecture, part theatre, part dance. The work’s fulcrum point, as it were, is a talk about the role that our concept of gender plays in both our inner and outer lives. These observations about how gender is performed through a number of social filters inform the choreography that is interspersed with recorded text that plays with the idea of the fluidity and mutability of our perception. The audience is invited to look at something we often imagine as a solid, biologically determined truth as a thing that is socially perceived and is therefore dynamic, in flux, like our very existence. Han Lash The Art of Leaving ist teils Lesung, teils Theater, teils Tanz. Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Stücks ist ein Vortrag über die Rolle, die unser Konzept von Geschlecht in unserem inneren und äußeren Leben spielt. In Poetica the solo percussionist and vocalist is accompanied by four percussionists, a pre-recorded trio basso – a strange extension of the percussion becoming independent at times – and electronics which include many sounds of demonstrations recorded in Paris, Tel Aviv and the USA. The piece is a meditation about attempting to find a point of clarity and solace in a harsh and unpredictable and indecipherable reality. Through more than a hundred published works and many recordings, Bernard Rands is recognized worldwide as a major figure in contemporary music. His work Canti del Sole, premiered by tenor Paul Sperry, Zubin Mehta, and the New York Philharmonic, won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Rands’ numerous compositions, including works for orchestra, chamber orchestra, instrumental and vocal ensembles, and soloists, as well as two operas, have been commissioned and championed by esteemed conductors and ensembles around the world. He has been honored by the American Academy and Institute of the Arts and Letters, the Guggenheim Foundation, and Koussevitsky Foundations, among many others. We send Bernard Rands our warm congratulations on this milestone birthday!

The legendary oboist, successful composer and much sought-after conductor, Heinz Holliger has permeated all eras and styles of music from Machaut to the present with consummatediversity like no other individual. Holliger has not only substantially developed the technique of the oboe and other instruments, creating unbelievably rich tonal worlds: each and every work of his extensive catalogue is imbued with innate magic and ideas, to paraphrase Herman Hesse. It is therefore no coincidence that his compositional lodestars include the poetcomposer Robert Schumann and Bernd Alois Zimmermann (whose orchestral works he conducted in an award-winning recording with the WDR Orchestra) and his compositional cosmos is steeped in literature ranging from authors such as Friedrich Hölderlin to Nikolaus Lenau, and from Robert Walser to Nelly Sachs. We look forward to experiencing new compositions by Heinz Holliger and offer him our sincere congratulations!

Mit mehr als 100 veröffentlichten Werken und zahlreichen Einspielungen gilt Bernard Rands weltweit als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter zeitgenössischer Musik. Für sein Werk Canti del Sole, das von dem Tenor Paul Sperry, dem Dirigenten Zubin Mehta und den New Yorker Philharmonikern uraufgeführt wurde, erhielt Rands 1984 den Pulitzer-Preis für Musik. Harald Weiss ist in seiner Vielschichtigkeit nur schwer einer Kategorie zuzuordnen. Als Dirigent, Komponist und Schlagzeuger hat er fast den ganzen Globus bereist, was seine Musik in Vielem spürbar beeinflusst hat. In Kompositionen, die unter anderem Bühnenwerke, geistliche Musik sowie Filmmusiken umfassen, setzte sich Weiss häufig mit experimentellen Konzepten auseinander. Zentral sind dabei Raum- und Sinneseindrücke, die auch das Konzerterlebnis erweitern. So spielen beispielsweise Nacht, Dunkelheit und Finsternis in seinem Darkness Project, mit dem er sich seit dem Jahr 2000 über einen Zeitraum von fast 20 Jahren beschäftigte, eine wichtige Rolle. Wir von Schott gratulieren Harald Weiss sehr herzlich!

It is hard to pin down the multi-talented Harald Weiss to any specific category. His careers as conductor, composer and percussionist have taken him to most countries around the world and his impressions have significantly influenced his music in many ways. Weiss has frequently incorporated experimental concepts in his compositions which include works for the stage, sacred music, and film scores. Spatial and sensual impressions have featured as central themes which have also enriched his concert works. A prime example is his Darkness Project to which he has devoted himself over a period of almost 20 years since 2000, in which night and darkness have played a major role. We at Schott offer our sincere congratulations to Harald Weiss!

Nils Holgersson torments the animals on the farm and is transformed into a gnome as punishment. He finally learns the value of friendship when flying on the backs of wild geese and eventually, he is permitted to return to his human form. The work is based on Selma Lagerlöf’s eponymous novel. The children’s chorus (primary school age) narrates the events of the hero’s journey in extensive scenes. Two actors – one playing Nils Holgersson and the other slipping between all other roles – interact with the members of the chorus. The work can be performed onstage or in a concert version. Nils Holgersson ärgert die Tiere auf dem Bauernhof und wird zur Strafe in einen Wichtel verwandelt. Auf dem Rücken der Wildgänse lernt er den Wert der Freundschaft kennen und erhält seine menschliche Gestalt zurück. Das Stück basiert auf Selma Lagerlöfs berühmtem Roman. In umfangreichen Nummern erzählt der Kinderchor (Grundschulalter) von den Begegnungen der Heldenreise. Zwei Schauspieler:innen verkörpern Nils Holgersson sowie alle übrigen Rollen und interagieren mit den Chormitgliedern. Das Stück lässt sich konzertant und szenisch aufführen.

German Music Authors’ Lili Elbe wins Prize: Aribert Reimann Oper! Award Aribert Reimann was awarded the German Music Author’s Prize for his life’s work in February. The jury highlighted ‘his consistent artistic excellence, his unique œuvre, and his significant contribution to contemporary music culture’. The German Music Author’s Prize was created by GEMA in 2009 to acknowledge composers and librettists for their outstanding achievements in the German musical scene. Aribert Reimann wurde im Februar mit dem Deutschen Musikautor:innenpreis für sein Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet. Der Deutsche Musikautor:innenpreis wurde 2009 von der GEMA ins Leben gerufen, um die Komponist:innen und Textdichter:innen der deutschen Musiklandschaft für ihre herausragenden Leistungen zu würdigen.

Lili Elbe by Tobias Picker has won an Oper! Award for the best world premiere of 2023. The award ceremony took place at De Nationale Opera Amsterdam on 29 January 2024. The Oper! Award is Germany's only international opera prize. A jury of specialised journalists decides on the awards in a total of 20 categories. Lili Elbe opened the season at the Sankt Gallen Theatre last October. The title role was played by trans baritone Lucia Lucas, who also advised Tobias Picker and his librettist Aryeh Lev Stollman on the development of the opera. (See page 7).

The Royal Philharmonic Society announced that Swaddling Silk and Gossamer Rain by Noriko Koide has been shortlisted for the RPS Large-Scale Composition Award. The award is one of the most prestigious classical music awards in the UK, and the winner will be revealed in a celebration for RPS Awards at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester on 5 March 2024. Swaddling Silk and Gossamer Rain was commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra for their BBC Proms in Japan in 2022, and its UK premiere was given at the BBC Proms 2023.

Schott has passed into the hands of the Strecker Foundation After 253 years as a family-owned business, Schott has passed into the hands of the charitable Strecker Foundation which will therefore guarantee the permanent independence of the publishing house for its authors and composers. Alongside central publishing issues, the Strecker Foundation with Dr. Peter Hanser-Strecker and Saskia Osterhold as members of the management board, devotes itself particularly to the promotion of music and the fields of child and adult education, providing support for young artistic and musicological talents and increasingly in the future, with the funding of music therapy projects. The foundation’s own project ‘Singen ist klasse’ is one of the longer-term initiatives receiving support. The program has been providing financial resources for music lessons in schools for three years and received a German Prize for Cultural Support in the summer of 2023.

Nach 253 Jahren in Familienhand ging der Schott-Verlag im Dezember in den Besitz der gemeinnützigen Strecker-Stiftung über. Damit ist die Selbstständigkeit als Autor:innenverlag für immer gesichert. Die Stiftungsvorstände Dr. Peter Hanser-Strecker und Saskia Osterhold widmen sich neben den zentralen verlegerischen Themen bei Schott Music der Förderung von Musikprojekten, insbesondere im Bereich der Kinder- und Erwachsenenbildung, des künstlerischen sowie musikwissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses und zukünftig verstärkt der Unterstützung von musiktherapeutischen Projekten.

Ivor Novello Award: Dobrinka Tabakova Dobrinka Tabakova and Schott Music have been awarded an Ivor Novello Award for Best Community and Participation Composition. Commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society, Swarm Fanfares was premiered by the Hallé Youth Orchestra at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, conducted by Delyana Lazarova. The jury described the piece as an exciting and dynamic work for young musicians that ‘showcases sonically inventive techniques and brilliant orchestral writing as well as exceptional aleatoric sequences’. As in the case of his successful opera Bluthochzeit, Wolfgang Fortner also selected a work by Federico García Lorca for his composition In seinem Garten liebt Don Perlimplín Belisa [In his garden, Don Perlimplín loves Belisa]. As Don Perlimplin has already reached a certain age, he enters into a marriage of convenience with the younger Belisa. It is only Belisa’s adultery which prompts Don Perlimplín’s to fall genuinely in love with her. For her part, Belisa is in love with a mysterious lover who is, following a lost duel, established to have been Don Perlimplín himself. Belisa now has to bury her deceased husband, only then in recognition of true love. Fortner created a specific ‘characteristic musical sign’ for each of the four scenes of his twelve-tone chamber opera: a lyrical Scherzo is followed by a Nocturne, a Duet and a Serenade in which strict formal sections alternate with free formal improvisation. Wie bereits für seine erfolgreiche Oper Bluthochzeit bediente sich Wolfgang Fortner bei der Handlung von In seinem Garten liebt Don Perlimplín Belisa an einer literarischen Vorlage von Federico García Lorca. Da Don Perlimplín bereits ein gewisses Alter erreicht hat, geht er eine Zweckehe mit der jüngeren Belisa ein. Erst Belisas Ehebruch lässt Don Perlimplín seine Liebe zu ihr erkennen. Belisa hingegen liebt einen geheimnisvollen Liebhaber, der sich nach einem verlorenen Duell mit einem Konkurrenten aber schließlich als Don Perlimplín entpuppt. Im Wissen um die verlorene wahre Liebe trägt Belisa ihren Ehemann zu Grabe. Für jedes der vier Bilder seines zwölftönigen Kammerspiels hat Fortner ein eigenes „charakteristisches musikalisches Signum“ geschaffen: Auf ein lyrisches Scherzo folgen ein Nachtstück, ein Duett und eine Serenade. Dabei wechseln sich Teile in strenger Form und in freier formaler Improvisation ab.
