Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century and one of the most important composers of his era, is regarded as an unusually charismatic personality. Whereas the years in which Liszt travelled around Europe as a celebrated piano virtuoso or worked in Weimar as composer and kapellmeister are well known and documented, the 25 years (1861-86) spent in Rome and Tivoli have been neglected up to now. This richly illustrated pictorial history describes for the first time in great detail the life and work of Liszt in the ‘Eternal City’ where he turned towards Catholicism and where he created his radical late works. At the same time, the numerous documentary pictures most of which have previously been unpublished create an impressive portrait of 19th-century Rome. With a foreword and CD by Alfred Brendel.

Mikis Theodorakis is one of the most famous figures in recent Greek history. The self-declared ‘Cretan, Greek and European’ stands out not only due to his very varied musical oeuvre which ranges from symphonic music via film classics such as Zorba the Greek to numerous Greek folksongs but also due to his political commitment, e.g. as voice against the Greek military dictatorship. Regardless of all social circumstances, his main interest has always been the music. This illustrated book portrays the life of Theodorakis. Apart from documenting his various creative periods as a composer, hundreds of photos and numerous unpublished statements of Mikis Theodorakis and his companions provide an insight into this eventful life between music and politics.

Ernst Burger, born in 1937, lives in Munich as a pianist and author. With his award-winning documentary biographies about Liszt, Chopin and Schumann, he has made a name for himself as an outstanding chronicler of the 19th century.
