2021 Woman of Strength

Mary Beth Kline Mulicka

As the mother of seven children, Mary Beth Mulicka’s qualities of courage and optimism shine. Widowed at an early age, Mary Beth raised her family putting a high value on their Catholic Education.

Perhaps Mary Beth’s strength of character and love for the needy are most evident in her compassionate and devoted care for daughter, Marisa. Marisa is a significantly autistic child who needs 24/7 care. For all of her 27 years, Mary Beth has been with Marisa each and every night of her life. When Marisa awakens through the night, every night, Mary Beth is there to comfort her. One of Mary Beth’s daughter describes her as a woman who never sleeps, with vacations being almost non – existent.

Mary Beth exhibits constant, gentle care and seems to know Marisa’s every need, even though Marisa is non-verbal and non- communicative.

Mary Beth exemplifies Christian values and generosity as an active member of Notre Dame Church in Bethlehem. She is a dedicated Eucharistic Minister and Mass lector, a Retreat Leader and a member of the Parish Women’s Group. Along with teaching her children to give back to their community from an early age, Mary Beth now encourages them as adults to serve their respective home parishes. Mary Beth’s daughter, Elizabeth, currently teaches at Notre Dame Grade School.

According to friends and family members, Mary Beth‘s optimistic spirit, integrity and persistence are always present, but they especially shone as she attended St. Francis Academy. Her friends say Mary Beth was one of the most jovial and friendly people in class. A friend describes her as a person who always had a smile on her face. Her optimism and persistence continued into her professional life. She quickly rose through the banking ranks at First Valley and then at Embassy Banks. Starting as a teller, Mary Beth eventually became Assistant Vice President. She attained these high positions due to her integrity and persistence, insuring customer service. She also assisted in the success of a family business, Bethlehem Sporting Goods. Family, friends and associates comment that Mary Beth uses optimism, integrity and persistence, insuring customer service. She also assisted in the success of a family business, Bethlehem Sporting Goods. Family, friends and associates comment that Mary Beth uses optimism, integrity and persistence as a life guide, both with family and in her professional life. Whether through a hand written note or by calling a customer by name, Mary Beth ensures that all feel important. When employed at the bank, customers would seek her out because of her calm, optimistic, and professional nature.

Friends comment that Mary Beth ‘never met a stranger.’

There probably is not a more Community Service oriented person in any room. As a Board Member for our beloved St. Francis Center for Renewal, Mary Beth has also served as a Board Member to the renowned Mercy School for Special Learning and for the Judith Adele Agentis Charitable Foundation. For many years, she helped organized a large group of people for the Lehigh Valley Autism Speaks Walk. Named after her daughter and guided by Mary Beth, “Marisa’s Crew” always went above and beyond to raise monies for this worthy cause.

As if Mary Beth is not busy enough, she continues to serve as a resource for her family. Having retired from her position at the bank to take care of her family, Mary Beth ‘stays young’ chasing daily after her toddler grandchildren. According to her daughter, her grandchildren just love their ‘Ama.’ And so the next generation now learns by Mary Beth’s example of faith, courage and generosity.

Mary Beth also regularly visits her elderly mother (Elizabeth Kline, Woman of Strength 2016) to take her food and bring joy and companionship to her Mom. Together they may chat about the antics of the great-grandchildren, and Marisa too, before Mary Beth runs off to another community commitment.

As a Board Member to St. Francis Center for Renewal, earlier this year Mary Beth wrote “God has been so good to me and God has blessed me in countless ways.”

Truly it is us who are blessed to know Mary Beth Mulicka, Woman of Strength 2021!

Troubadour of Light Audrey Bova

Audrey was raised in a large and loving family that focused on giving back to their community and ‘living the Gospel.’

Audrey was in her sophomore year at West Chester University when she began volunteering as a Young Life leader at Coatesville High School in May of 2018. Young Life, which has been in existence since the 1930’s, is a group of caring adults who go “where the kids are” to develop relationships, share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and support them as they navigate the trials of growing up. Over the next year, Audrey put in about 10 hours a week as a volunteer leader. Those hours consisted of weekly meetings with other Coatesville Young Life teammates and biweekly meetings and trainings with all the other Young Life leaders in the region.

More importantly, it also consisted of time with students. Every week Audrey and her team met to talk about the bible, faith and what it looked like to have a relationship with Jesus in high school. Each week the young life leaders gathered with high schoolers to play games and have dinner with them and then present the Christian faith in a way that made sense and was applicable to their lives.

Outside of those meetings, Audrey participated in various school sporting events, community events, meeting high schoolers in the area where they lived. After about a year, realizing the impact that Young Life had made on many people’s lives, Audrey interned with Young Life part-time in their student staff role. In this role Audrey learned the ‘behind the scenes’ work that Young Life does to make ministry happen. Planning events, hosting fundraisers, gathering adult supporters and caring for donors, were just a few of the opportunities that the internship with Young Life provided. After graduation from West Chester College, Audrey was hired to a full-time Staff Associate role. In this role her primary focus is on ministry to the community of Coatesville.

In her own words: “So often this year I have asked God; It is so hard for me to see you but I know you are here - show me how you are working!”

God has been at work! Every Monday & Wednesday she helps high school girls with homework, and has reconnected with many she lost contact with during the quarantine, enabling her to work more closely with each individual. Audrey also states “The ministry has offered so much spiritual growth in my own life over just the past 3+ years and along with that, I have been able to see high schoolers introduced to Jesus and seen them also grow as we take this faith journey together.”

By her example and dedication Audrey has modeled the Christian life for the many teens she mentors. She has truly let her light shine as a Troubadour of Light.

Front Line Pandemic Worker …True Hero!

Ellie Franges worked throughout the COVID crisis ensuring the best neurosurgical care of her patients in a large, local healthcare system. Ellie has cared for patients for over 40 years and the COVID crisis did not stopped her!

In the early days of the pandemic, Ellie had to quarantine after being exposed to a COVID positive patient that she was seeing in the clinic. During her quarantine, Ellie continued to work and see patients virtually.

She conducted numerous telehealth visits and assisted patients and guided them to navigate an overwhelmed healthcare system.

Heroically, after quarantine, Ellie quickly returned to seeing her patients. As a Doctor of Nursing Practice, she saw patients in person on the hospital units and in clinic and was present to assess and treat these patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, helping them with neurosurgical problems in a COVID world.

Ellie has always been an extraordinary nursing leader. She is a mentor and role model for student nurses. Ellie has been a professor in various collegiate nursing programs. She inspires her students to be caring professionals, and during the pandemic she had her students focus on nursing leadership development during the global healthcare crisis.

Thank You, Ellie. We applaud you!

Celebrating My Heroes – SPMS Teachers Led by Stephanie Spann, Principal As a middle school nurse in a downtown Charleston, SC public school, I can tell you that my heroes are ALL the teachers and support staff at our school. We are Simmons Pinckney Middle School, an inner-city school of about 300 sixth, seventh & eighth grade students. Most of these families, in normal times, face the challenges of poverty, dangerous neighborhoods and unemployment. However, one thing they do have is a community. This community included all the teachers at the school.

This past school year the community faced uncertainty, isolation and fear.

The school and the teachers were an integral part in helping in every aspect of the welfare of this community, not just the student but also the families as well.

The teachers faced the major challenge of teaching in person, and via Zoom, to a population that sometimes did not have internet, childcare or proper electronic devices.

Despite these challenges, somehow schedules were made to enable students to access teachers and teachers to access students. Despite the virus, some home visits were made to try to connect with those student and families who we were all concerned about. Summer school was held during July to try to help students make up work and be promoted to the next grade.

I cannot say enough about the dedication, perseverance and the love these teachers showed in the MOST challenging school year in my experience.

My daughter ~ Liann Bova!

Liann graduated from University of South Carolina in 2018 and started her career in New Orleans on a Med-Surg floor. In November of 2019 she moved to Wilmington, DE. and began working in a Medical ICU (Intensive Care Unit.) In February, 2020 this unit became THE COVID ICU. She has been working in that COVID ICU ever since.

After a year of working under the worst conditions: extremely sick COVID patients, uncertainty of therapies, scarcity of PPE, daily experiences of death and grieving family members, I asked her if she was still happy with her choice of career. She said Yes. All the terrible stories reported in the media she reported to me, in many after shift phone calls, the same horrible situations.

For her stamina, resilience and perseverance in powering through the most physically, mentally and emotionally stressful year; Liann is my HERO! I couldn't be a prouder Mom.
