St. Francis Center for Renewal is delighted to 'Shine its Light' on Joe & Shirley Knecht Hixson!

If one sits for any length of time with Joe and Shirley Knecht Hixson, one thing becomes abundantly clear‌ their love for one another. Celebrating their tenth anniversary this past January, Joe and Shirley are basically newlyweds. That tender, newly-wed care for one another is so strongly evident in their mutual attentiveness and thoughtfulness.

Both deeply faithful individuals, they have allowed that love to bubble over into their care for the people around them. An amazing leadership couple, they are generous, kind and caring in their acts of selfless love for people and for charitable organizations.

While Joe and Shirley were planning their wedding, we at St.Francis Center were planning our first Star Struck Gala! Joe’s Battery & Tire was one of the first businesses to eagerly sign on in support of the Gala. Every year since then has seen ongoing support for the Gala, the School Sisters and the ministry of the Center and, eventually, the Monocacy Farm Project, as well.

So, as we both (St. Francis Center for Renewal and Joe and Shirley) celebrate 10 wonderful years, it is only fitting that Joe and Shirley would be honored tonight.

Two faithful people who have found love in one another and who choose to bless those around them with that same care and generosity of heart.

The 2020 Woman of Strength Award

to a woman who is a strong example of Strength of Character, Christian Values, Courage, Generosity, Persistence Optimism, Integrity and Community Service.

Our COnGrATulATIOnS to

Nina Marie Corona

Nina Marie Corona For the past 10 years Nina Corona has tirelessly dedicated herself to educate and support others and communities who are struggling with addiction. When a loved one was overcome by addiction, Nina embarked on a journey to become educated about the disease, to help save the loved one and others. She enrolled in the Drug and Alcohol counseling program at Villanova University and received her certification while doing college coursework at the same time.

Nina felt there was a need and a call for her to make a difference.

Her Masters Integration project at Loyola was her opportunity to help educate and advocate for those judged by society. Nina worked through hundreds of books, journals and interviews while she was creating the We Thirst Series. The series revolves around mercy, compassion and service.The countless hours put in to create it are a testament to the impact it has made in communities and individuals.

Here is just one recent testimony: “I came to expand my knowledge and learned about expanding my heart.�— We ThirstTM Attendee Cranaleith Spiritual Center, Philadelphia PA Nina has continually worked to refine and update this series so anyone who attended would benefit. She has presented numerous times at no charge to reach as many of those affected as possible.

Her motivation lies solely in helping others. Her message is of compassion and mercy, while challenging all of us to be of service to the community, utilizing any gifts bestowed on us.

Shortly after the We Thirst Series ministry was presented to various communities, Nina embarked on a mission to create a non-profit called AFIRE to help any community plan, organize and share with others their knowledge, support and compassion. She designed a free kit for any community to help them organize. Nina has organized drives to help those in need with essentials such as Hygiene items, socks, shoes, hats and scarves. She presently has approximately 18 communities that have requested the kit and are discerning and working towards helping their community.

Woman of Strength 2020 Anyone in need who has reached out to Nina has been helped in some way. She prioritizes the urgency of that call, email or text from the individual or family member that is in the midst of their affliction. She has consistently been a source of support and inspiration to many. She has motivated people in recovery to also give back to community. Some have organized meetings, or helped counsel those that are in a present struggle.The dedication, concern and empathy for those in a struggle, is the fire that drives Nina and her ministries. She continues to work tirelessly to spread the message.

Ninas latest project that is almost complete, is an educational and inspirational five part series on addiction. She hopes to reach out to as many individuals and communities in a struggle so they have the knowledge and plans to help them succeed in their mission. She created this due to many requests for her series in other parts of the country, and she felt a need to help them.

NINA MARIE CORONA BIO: Nina is a public speaker, educator, writer, and retreat facilitator. She is passionate about guiding individuals and communities towards understanding, peace, fulfillment, and personal and societal transformation. She accomplishes this through writing, artwork, and educational and inspirational courses, presentations, programs, and retreats for diverse audiences.

With a Bachelors degree from Muhlenberg college, a Masters in Christian Spirituality from Loyola, Chicago, Nina is currently finishing off the last phase of her Doctorate of Ministry from Fordham.

Nina is the creator and facilitator of the popular program We Thirst (Christian Reflections on Addiction), a comprehensive educational and inspirational retreat series that has been featured on numerous radio shows and news articles, as well as the USCCB podcast “Made for Love.”

She is the founder and Executive Director of AFIRE™ (Active Faith Implementing Relief in the Epidemic), a 501c3 nonprofit, faith-based movement that has also been featured in the media. Nina is the author of When on Earth (Discovering Christian Spirituality in the Daily Happenings of Ordinary Life), a book of reflections that will be released soon. She has also self-authored and taught several theology / spirituality courses for Villanova University.

Nina is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities and Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective multidisciplinary collegiate honor society. She is also a member of NAADAC (The Association for Addiction Professionals) and was a panelist for the association’s webinar series on The Spirituality of Addiction. Nina is also member of the elite Catholic Speakers Organization, CatholicSpeakers.com.

A trained and experienced artist, when she has time, Nina utilizes her artistic gifts in painting, drawing, and sculpting to express herself and the experiences that have brought both joy and pain to her life. Nina resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with her husband of 37 years, Mark. They have two adult daughters and one grandson.

Troubadour of Light

The 2020 Troubadour of Light Award.

This award is presented to a young person, between the ages of 18 and 25, who has chosen to proclaim the Gospel by letting their light shine!

This year’s award is presented to

+Anthony DiBlasi Myers.

Troubadour of Light Anthony DiBlAsi Myers was born in Reading, PA on April 3, 2002, a son of Jessica (Deblasi) Myers and Edward Myers, of Reading, PA. As a young child he attended Holy Guardian Angels Elementary School and later Berks Catholic High School where he was an honor student.

Anthony was a young man with an energetic spirit and a deep faith. Those who knew and loved him remember and speak fondly of his vibrant personality and the joy and laughter he brought into their lives.

An Honor Student and a stellar football and hockey player, off the field and rink, Anthony was a loving son and brother, a dedicated classmate and teammate, a faithful friend. His love for life was a source of inspiration and great joy to all who knew him. He never tired of “doing” for others and being a part of “making a difference” in the world.

In October of 2018, Anthony was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.

Through treatments and surgery he was an inspiration to those around him. The fighting charge became 17STRONG his beloved football jersey number. Beyond the halls of Berks Catholic and the State of PA, prayers and well wishes flooded the Myers home.

Anthony was a fighter and he fought strong and hard - 17STRONG - until he could fight no more. On December 4, 2019, God saw fit to call home this young man who had lived his life for Christ and walked in His light.

Although Anthony’s light has dimmed here on earth, it is now intertwined with the everlasting light of Christ which shines brightly upon us all.

This good and faithful servant lived his “light” proudly and boldly.

Well done, Anthony! Well done!

You were like a new family to this new immigrant. Watching and listening to you, I witnessed the skill and grace of Franciscan hospitality. The Monocacy Farm Project seeks to use land and resources at Monocacy Manor in the Franciscan tradition to model stewardship and care of the earth, foster community involvement, provide educational opportunities and serve the needs of the poor.

Grow Healthy Community Production Farm 

Our young Apple Orchard and Blueberry Patch will enhance the growing fields adding a fruit choice to our weekly supplies of donated organic produce for low income families, area shelters and kitchens.

Demonstration Garden & Educational Programs   

A half-acre garden and greenhouse will provide a platform for teaching organic gardening methods, natural agriculture, and other topics related to living sustainably.
