Welcome to the SCHOOLOFDESIGN at George Brown College

Designed to focus imagination and hone critical thinking, our programs assist students in applying the latest technologies for a career in design. Our unique educational approach combines academic programs with authentic-task projects to create a community of learning that includes knowledgeable faculty, international lecturers, alumni stories, industry partners, and designers-in-residence.

We build skills, refine talent, and expose students to the world of professional design practice.

At the School of Design at George Brown College, you’ll not only learn design—you will live and breathe it. Your design education takes place in a brand new, state-of-the- art learning space in downtown Toronto, home to Canada’s greatest concentration of design businesses. Here you’ll be immersed in the design community, and expected to apply your natural skills to actual design projects.

Art and Design Foundation

Academic Programs — Preparatory

Art and Design Foundation allows students to gain practical, creative, and critical thinking skills throughout studio-based curriculum that combine a variety of analog and digital projects.

Courses in the first half of the program introduce students to the language of art and design, history of art, and the foundations of observational drawing, form and space, photography, and digital design. In the second term, students learn advanced skills and creative problem-solving techniques in design process and the foundations of colour theory and practice.

Join us to explore a variety of art and design disciplines, learn creative skills in a studio-based environment, and develop a portfolio for further study.

What will I do?

— Create 2D and 3D designs using a range of materials, processes, and techniques.

— Use design processes to develop and solve visual problems.

— Apply formal elements and principles of design.

— Articulate art concepts, history, and the role of art and design in society to the general public.

— Develop an art and design focused portfolio and accompanying presentation approaches in a variety of media through studio-based projects.

— Be introduced to professional practitioners in the creative industries and their unique experiences.

Future Programs of Study Graduates of this program will develop a portfolio to assist in future academic pathways. Some potential programs of study include Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Game—Art, Digital Experience Design, Brand Design, or other post-secondary art and design programs.

Graduates of the program with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 are eligible for direct entry into the George Brown Graphic Design program.

Academic Programs — Advanced Diploma 06

Graphic Design The Graphic Design program provides a strong overall understanding of design while allowing students to major in either Communication or Advertising Design respectively.

Replete with design electives, the program allows you to gain skills in areas such as illustration, motion graphics, interaction and web design, editorial, and environmental design.

Over three years, you’ll learn strong foundations in the core subjects of design, typography, production, digital applications, and both design research and a senior thesis project.

The curriculum is rooted in reallife projects in state-of-the-art labs and through industry networking.

Complimentary membership in the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) is offered to all students, giving access to a network of Canada’s top design professionals and a head start in the process of becoming an RGD member.

— Conceptualize and develop design solutions using principles to create visual communications.

— Communicate ideas, design concepts, and opinions clearly and persuasively to others.

— Plan, implement, and evaluate graphic design projects using project management skills to deliver quality work to clients according to schedule and within budget.

Academic Programs — Advanced Diploma 08

Interaction Design Interaction Design is an interdisciplinary field merging design skills such as user experience, interface development and visual design with programming to create meaningful experiences between the user, digital and physical platforms, such as websites, wearables and mobile devices.

Modified by the psychological, social, economic and cultural factors that shape our present and future world, this ever-evolving field envisions new ways of human-computer interaction within systems, services, products and spaces across multiple industries.

Throughout the Interaction Design program, students will be expected to address such topics as mixed realities, immersive environments, usability, spatial relations and human factors.

An emphasis on usability testing, research, collaboration and real-world projects distinguish this program.

Students will engage in research, design, testing, and group work to create original interactions in a way that is meaningful and practical.

— Collaborate in a team environment with various stakeholders to design multidisciplinary products and services.

Year One

— Design, build, visualize, and code digital interactive experiences.

— Plan the development and execution of an interaction design project in response to resource and budgetary requirements.

— Design complex media projects (interface, navigation, graphics, text treatment) using best practice design and development principles.

— Make interactive products, environments, systems and services.

— Create a design solution in accordance with strategies, recommendations and state of the art methodologies.

Future Programs of Study Graduates of this program may be interested in pursuing further education in Digital Experience Design, Interactive Media Management, Web Development – Front-End Design, Design Management and Interdisciplinary Design Strategy.

Qualified students, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 (75%), who complete two or three years of the program, can apply to take a bridge semester and then move directly into the 3rd year of the Digital Experience Design Bachelor’s degree. The bridge includes three degree courses and two liberal studies electives.

Career Options Graduates are employed by agencies and studios in Toronto and abroad, working in interaction design, information architecture, user experience design, user interface development, production artists, and web developers.

Academic Programs — Advanced Diploma 010

Game — Art Video games have become one of the leading forms of artistic expression in the 21st century. Game development requires a combination of talents, hard work and passion. Game — Art is a rigorous program of study that focuses on the principles and techniques of video game art creation required to break into the industry.

Students will develop both 2D and 3D artistic abilities by learning concept art, sprite and pixel art, modelling, texturing, animation, and level design. Taught by faculty with industry experience and mentored by local game industry leaders, students will develop games for commercial, educational and other purposes. In the second year, students choose whether to specialize in game modelling or game animation, in doing so, they will have the unique opportunity to develop commercial quality games in a simulated video game studio environment, at times working with industry partners and game programmers.

The fees include a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, a digital drawing tablet, Pluralsight, digital tutors subscription and a membership to IGDA.

Academic Programs — Honours Bachelor Degree 012

Digital Experience Design Digital experience design includes related fields such as service design, user experience design, and interaction design. It involves understanding human behaviour and human computer interaction, conducting research and usability studies, managing projects and working in teams, applying business skills, working with existing and emerging digital technologies, prototyping new ideas, and anticipating future trends.

Interactive Digital Media is a growing industry that is quickly changing, driven by shifts in consumer behaviour and technology.

Graduates of this program will be able to contribute to and eventually lead interdisciplinary teams to solve problems across a variety of fields such as security, transportation, education, and manufacturing. The degree also prepares students to pursue graduate studies in a wide range of academic disciplines.

Brand Design The Honours Bachelor of Brand Design Degree is a four-year program that responds to the rapidly changing world of graphic design by preparing students to be forward-looking brand designers with strengths in collaboration, research, critical and strategic thinking, technical design execution and brand storytelling. It is built on multidisciplinary pillars of research, critical thinking, strategic brand development, technical design execution, and brand storytelling.

Brands are more than logos or sales tactics, they are carefully developed relationships between the brand makers and audiences––a brand is a promise to follow through on a purpose and a set of values that taken together express how someone perceives an organization or product. The Brand Design Degree is an opportunity to build a knowledgeable creative community of collaborators and strategic designers who are able to bridge business strategy, technology, and the design world in order to produce innovative brand experiences.

Design Management Students will learn how to develop design strategies for products and services based on business objectives.

This program teaches practical tools and interpersonal facilitative skills, as well as the business knowledge required to manage a consultancy or corporate design division. The courses cover the essential elements of a business strategy and how design contributes to the definition and realization of the strategy.

The program is well suited for design professionals with a global perspective who want to become active partners in helping firms develop and grow through expanded participation in strategic management. It provides an exceptional environment to enhance career opportunities in supervisory or management positions, while considering entrepreneurial initiatives.

Interactive Media Management The Interactive Media Management is designed to give power back to designers, introducing them to the latest real-time interactive tools and technologies. With the integration of these technologies into public and commercial settings, such as museums and retail environments, as well as the education and medical sectors, designers need to be armed with key knowledge of interface design, information visualization and virtual spaces. They have a mission to create friendly systems and interfaces that dramatically improve the lives of consumers and sellers alike.

The program combines design education with software instruction and hands-on workshops to configure interactive design strategies using existing and emerging display technologies. You will be exposed to best practice examples and realworld models. If you are applying to any of the courses that require a portfolio submission, make yourself familiar with our Portfolio Guidelines, and make note of the significant specifications for each.

A portfolio is a collection of your work that showcases your skills, approaches, and curiosities. It should demonstrate your own original work and ideas through a range of media and techniques, as well as your ability to develop projects around specific themes.

You can include work completed as part of school projects, potential client work, and independent projects respectively. As the portfolio is submitted digitally and not presented in person, our adjudicating committees like to see portfolios that demonstrate a strove narrative, a high level of visual skill, creativity and curiosity, self-motivation, experimentation and stylistic variation.
