CONSERVATORIUM LIVE! Would you like to study music and be exceptionally well-prepared for our entrance exams?

If so, register for CONSER­ VATORIUM LIVE! We will tell you exactly what to expect and review how ready you are.

Our teachers for the various instruments will be available all day long with support and advice. Attendance is free, but registration is required, through our website. In 2021 Conservatorium Live! will take place between february and april.

In 1928, George Gershwin was visiting Alban Berg. As a good host, Berg had organized a string quartet to play his Lyrical Suite for his guest. Gershwin was so impressed that after the performance, he did not dare take a seat at the piano. What could his tin-pan-alley tunes possibly contribute after such profound Viennese power? But Berg consoled him, saying, ‘Mr. Gershwin, music is music.’

A baroque church sonata on an historic violin, or impro­ visations for the laptop and a singing saw: at the Ghent Conservatory, we are not concerned with stereo­types.

In our classical music programme, we prioritize profes­sional musician­ship with integrity, always directed by your own individual personality. Professional skill and intellectual development must necessarily go hand-in-hand. Alongside superb technical mastery of the respective instrument, we strive to achieve a thorough theoretical and cultural expertise, sound knowledge of performance practice and a critical approach to accepted or popular musical concepts.

MUZIEK IS MUZIEK

In 1928 was George Gershwin op bezoek bij Alban Berg.

Als goede gastheer had Berg een strijkkwartet geregeld om zijn lyrische suite voor te spelen. Gerhswin was echter zodanig onder de indruk dat hij na de uitvoering niet meer aan de piano durfde gaan zitten. Wat konden zijn Tin-Pan-Alley­deuntjes nu betekenen tegen zoveel doorleefd Weens strijkgeweld? “Meneer Gershwin, muziek is muziek,” sprak Berg hem geruststellend toe.

Een barokke kerksonate op historische viool of improvisaties voor laptop en zingende zaag, ook in het Gentse Conservatorium doen we niet aan hokjesdenken.

Binnen onze afstudeerrichting klassieke muziek stellen we een professioneel en integer muzikantschap voorop, waarbij je persoonlijkheid steeds richtinggevend blijft.

Ambachtelijke en intellectuele vorming gaan hand in hand. Naast een volmaakte technische beheersing van het instrument streven we naar theoretische en culturele deskundig­heid, kennis van uitvoeringspraktijk en een kritische houding tegenover heersende opvattingen.

Our classical music alumni find futures in a diverse range of professions in the cultural sector. National and inter­­ national concert stages are of course and ideal objective.

Many have won places for themselves in orchestras, includ­ing the Flemish Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras. Others enjoy careers in chamber music and as soloists. Education in the arts and the creative industries also offer oppor­tuni­ties.

Our professors are active professionals, they prepare you for a blossoming career with ample experience and knowledge.

Having already earned a master’s degree, would you like to continue expanding your musical expertise? Our advanced master in contemporary music, postgraduate soloist in clas­si­ cal music, musical performance practice and arts in sound, as well as a doctorate in the arts all offer a strong inter­national profiles, in which you can personally investigate the musical status quo. Onze alumni klassieke muziek vinden hun weg in een breed scala aan jobs binnen de culturele sector.

De concert­podia in binnen­en buitenland vormen uiteraard het ideale eind­doel. Verschillende studenten veroverden een plaats in toonaangevende binnen- én buitenlandse orkesten. Anderen maakten carrière in kamermuziek­­ verband of als solist. Ook het (kunst)onderwijs en de creatieve indus­trie­ën bieden kansen. Onze lesgevers (zie verder in deze brochure) zijn zeer actief als muzikale professionals. Daardoor kunnen zij jullie met alle kennis van zaken voorbereiden op een glansrijke loopbaan.

Wil je na het behalen van je master­diploma nog verder groeien in muzikale expertise? De master na master heden­ daagse muziek, de post­graduaten soloist classical music, musical perfor­mance practice en arts in sound, en het doc­ toraat in de kunsten bezorgen je een stevig interna­tionaal profiel waarmee je het muzikale status quo zelf in vraag kan stellen. Our English-language masters programmes hold a unique place in advanced art education. In Flanders, the KASK & Conservatory are the place where both Dutch-speaking and non-Dutch speaking master students can all develop in the arts, together under one roof and with a wide spectrum of backgrounds. Our classical music programme also has a fully developed English-language variation. Each academic year sees dozens of foreign students attending our Englishlanguage master program­me, ensuring an international atmos­ ­phere on our campuses. In terms of curriculum, competencies, content and organi­zation, there are no differences between the Dutch speaking and English-speaking masters programmes.

In a highly varied and professional way, our students become acquainted with the stage and its audiences. We organize a variety of diverse artistic projects. There are class concerts, workshops and master classes with famous musicians, such as Stefan Dohr, Alexei Lubimov and Pieter Wispelwey.

And there is our annual opera, conceived, developed and performed here. Our saxophone and clarinet choirs perform regularly, as do the harmony and symphony orchestras.

Our chamber music ensembles get to try out the big stages, and our improvisation class plays live several times each season to films presented at KASKcinema. All this and more provid­es our students with a busy, exciting and diverse calendar, with an eye to audiences, experience and excellence.

Onze studenten kunnen op een heel gevarieerde en profes­sio­ nele manier kennis maken met het podium en het publiek.

We organiseren een veelheid aan uit­eenlopende artistieke projecten. Klasconcerten, work­shops en masterclasses met beroemde musici als Stefan Dohr, Alexei Lubimov of Pieter Wispelwey. Of onze jaarlijkse opera, van start tot podium in huis vormgegeven en verklankt. De saxo­foon en klarinet­ choirs spelen regelmatig, samen met de harmonie-en sym­­fo­ nieorkesten. Ook kamer­muziek­ensembles testen het grotere podium en een aantal keer per seizoen speelt de impro­vi­sa­tie­­­ klas live bij films in KASKcinema. Een drukke, boeiende en afwisselend agenda voor onze studenten met de blik op het publiek, ervaring en meesterschap.

Ghent is home to 70,000 students, giving it the largest student population in Flanders. Cultural activities of all kinds are every­where. In 2009, UNESCO named the city of Ghent ‘Creative City of Music’, a prestigious title that has only been awarded to a handful of cities in the world. UNESCO did so thanks to Ghent’s exceptionally lively music scene, which is also very diverse, from classical music to popular dance and from film music to jazz, pop and musical theatre.

In Ghent, student life is filled with exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events. Its well-known podia include NTGent, de Vlaamse Opera, Handelsbeurs, Kunsten­centrum Vooruit, Capitole, De Centrale and more. The city is moreover home to a number of exceptional ensembles, including Collegium Vocale Ghent, SPECTRA, Flanders Symphony Orchestra, Flat Earth Society, LOD Musical Theatre, B’Rock, CdelaB and others, as well as many choirs, harmony groups and amateur music societies. Festivals that attract people from near and far include the Festival of Flanders, the Filmfest and its World Soundtrack Awards, Ghent Jazz, Jazz in the Park and the Gentse Feesten. During the Gentse Feesten, the Conservatory presents the Gentsche Fest­spiele concerts in both its own Concert Hall and KANTL. With a Cultureel Jongeren Paspoort (CJP), students under the age of 26 can enjoy cultural advantages and purchase tickets for a fraction of their normal cost.

Gent telt 70.000 studenten en is daarmee de grootste stu­dent­en­­ stad van Vlaanderen. Ook aan culturele acti­vi­teiten is er geen gebrek. In 2009 is Gent uitgeroepen door UNESCO tot ‘Creative City of Music’,een erkenning die we met een hand­vol steden overal ter wereld delen. UNESCO bekroonde Gent om­wille van haar uitzonderlijk levendige muziekscène, die tege­lijk zeer divers is: van klassiek tot de populaire dans­scène, van filmmuziek tot jazz, pop en muziektheater.

In Gent raakt een studentenleven gauw gevuld met ten­ toonstellingen, concerten en andere culturele evene­menten.

Bekende podia zijn NTGent, de Vlaamse Opera, Handels­ beurs, Kunsten­centrum Vooruit, Capitole, De Centrale, …

You want to be an important link in the development of art education and the stage arts landscape in Flanders. If this is you, the KASK School of Arts Master in Education in Music and Stage Arts is for you!

The KASK School of Arts organizes this degree program­ me in several ways, so that you can personally select the path best suited to your needs. You can enrol after completing a Master in Music. This is then a one-year programme. Or, you can enrol with a Bachelor in Music, and follow the two-year course. This offers an excit­ ing mix of both artistic and educational segments.

You can moreover bring 15 study points with you from your bachelor studies. In this way, your bachelor studies will already have provided you with signi­ ficant knowledge of educational issues and themes.

The Educational Master programme at KASK School of Art & Conservatory is characterized by several possible choices, thereby supporting an exceptional pedagogy in which support, guidance and individual supervision go hand in hand with freedom and auto­ nomy. This means that you can fill in the contents of your own educational trajectory and discover how you, as a musician and as a teacher, want to grow further, as well as find your place in the broader professional field. You auto­nomously investi­gate how the artistic and the educational aspects relate to one another.

Educational and teaching practice focused on a studentcentred approach is paramount forms the core of the study programme. In addition to broader professional and didactic frameworks, you will also be specialisttrained in didactic practice in music, with a strong focus on instrument or voice education and creating music in a group context.

Je zit boordevol dynamiek en enthousiasme om geïnteres­seerden mee te nemen in een wereld van muziek, artistieke ontwikkeling en creatie?

Je wil een belangrijke schakel zijn in de ontwikkeling van het kunstonderwijs en van het podiumlandschap in Vlaanderen? Dan is de educatieve master in de muziek en podiumkunsten zeker iets voor jou!

Onze school organiseert deze opleiding op verschil­lende manieren zodat jij het voor jouw meest geëigende pad kan kiezen: Ofwel volg je de opleiding na het behalen van je masterdiploma muziek. Dan is dit een éénjarige opleiding. Of je volgt de opleiding na het behalen van je bachelordiploma muziek als een tweejarige opleiding. In dit laatste traject krijg je een boeiende mix van zowel artistieke als educatieve opleidings­ onder­delen. Bijkomend kan je steeds al in je bache­ loropleiding 15 studiepunten uit het edu­ca­tieve traject opnemen. Zo maak je reeds uitgebreid inhoudelijk kennis met educatieve thema’s tijdens de bachelor­opleiding.

De educatieve master aan KASK & Conservatorium laat zich door een aantal eigen keuzes kenmerken.

Zo kiezen we voor een bijzondere pedagogiek waarin ondersteuning, sturing en individuele begeleiding samengaan met vrijheid en autonomie. Dit betekent dat jij invulling geeft aan je opleiding en onderzoekt hoe jij als muzikant en (muziek-)pedagoog wil verder groeien en hoe je je wil verhouden tot het brede professionele veld. Je onderzoekt daarbij auto­ noom hoe het artistieke en educatieve zich tot elkaar verhouden.

As a musician, you work together with students in the various artistic and musical disciplines. This interaction with jazz or pop musicians, composers, producers and/or instrument builders, for example, will expand your vision of art and education. Collaborating on projects in the visual and audiovisual arts and drama is an enriching experience. The Educational Master programme offers an open place whose cornerstones are interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and beyondthe-discipline working and learning.

The final work of the programme is the Master Project.

This is an educational project or a research project you yourself choose or design, in which you work together with professionals in the field or from the School of Arts. In this project, you show that you can consciously apply a pedagogical approach, self-reflection and an investigative attitude in order to continually improve your own teaching practice and artistic processes.

Achieving a high standard in art education presup­poses ample space for great individuality. We support that objective in every possible way.

De opleiding is nauw verbonden met het brede werk­ veld van leerplicht- en deeltijds kunstonderwijs en met het sociaal-artistieke en kunsteducatieve terrein.

Onder meer in je stage bouw je een brede waaier van ervaringen op waarbij je ook eigen keuzes maakt en voor jezelf boeiende leerdoelen omschrijft.

We laten je als muzikant samenwerken met andere studenten uit de verschillende kunstdisciplines. Die interactie met jazz- of popmuzikanten, componisten, producers of instrumentenbouwers en met schilders, beeldhouwers, toneelmakers, filmers, ontwerpers zal jouw kijk op kunst en educatie verruimen. Samen werken aan projecten in beeldende kunsten, audio­ visuele kunsten en drama zal een verrijking zijn.

De educatieve masteropleiding is een open plek waar interdisciplinair, vakoverschrijdend en multidi­ sciplinair werken en leren hoekstenen vormen.

De masterproef vormt het sluitstuk van de opleiding.

Het is een zelf gekozen educatief project of een onder­ zoeksvraag waarbij je gaat samenwerken met profes­ sionals uit het werkveld en uit onze school. Je toont hierbij dat je bewust pedagogisch handelen, zelf­ reflectie en een onderzoekende houding kan inzetten om je eigen onderwijspraktijk en artistieke processen continu te verbeteren. ‘In order to find a clearer artistic voice I offered myself the luxury to participate in the advanced master of contemporary music. Having been trained as a clas­ sical cellist I needed some extra time to turn my “alternative” skills into actual professional ones. To become a creative independent musician that curates its own concerts and projects I found the perfect programme in the advanced master at the conservatory of Gent.

It allowed me to meet pioneers of auda­ cious programming in the mentors of Ictus and SPECTRA ensemble who exposed me to numerous examples of individual musical creation trough their proper practice. ‘Verdergezette studies in hedendaagse muziek, het is een luxe die ik mezelf heb cadeau gedaan om een beter beeld te krijgen van mijn artistieke stem. Als klassiek opgeleide celliste aan verschillende conservatoria had ik alsnog tijd nodig om mijn ‘alternatieve’ vaardigheden tot het professionele te laten rijpen.

Om een creatief onafhankelijk musicus te worden die haar eigen concerten en projecten cureert, was ik in de master-na-master hedendaagse muziek aan het goede adres. De opleiding bracht me in contact met programmatorische pioniers in de hoedanigheid van de mentoren van Ictus en SPECTRA ensemble.

Via hun artistieke praktijk ging ik beseffen wat waarlijk individuele creatie kon betekenen. Ik heb bijzonder genoten van de filosofisch toegespitste seminaries en het brede lessenaanbod, waar ook studenten en docenten van KASK aan te pas komen. Ik denk dan onder meer aan heldere geesten als Hilde D’haeyere en Lars Kwakkenbos.’

‘During my studies in the Netherlands I decided to go to the conservatory in Ghent to study with Arielle Valibouse.

It was quite an undertaking to move from the Netherlands to Belgium! Yet this turned out to be the right decision.

Thanks to all the support of the teachers and the many fun orchestral and chamber music projects, I was able to develop my musical skills! After my master I thought I could still learn a lot and I perfected myself in the Postgraduate Soloist Clas­ sical Music. Of the five years I studied in Ghent, I can only say that they have made me into the musi­cian that I am today. I do no regret for a single moment my decision to quit my studies in the Netherlands and pursue my dreams at the Ghent Conservatory.’

‘Tijdens mijn studie in Nederland besloot ik om naar het conservatorium in Gent te trekken om er te studeren bij Arielle Valibouse. Een hele onder­neming om van­ uit Nederland naar België te ver­huizen!

Toch bleek dit de goeie beslissing. Door alle steun van de leraren en de leuke orkest- en kamermuziek projecten heb ik mezelf muzikaal enorm kunnen ont­ wikkelen! Na mijn master vond ik dat ik nog veel kon bijleren en heb ik me ver­volmaakt in het Postgraduaat Soloist Classical Music. Van de vijf jaar studeren in Gent kan ik alleen maar zeggen dat ze me gevormd hebben tot de musicus die ik nu ben. Ik heb dan ook geen moment spijt gehad van mijn keuze om mijn studie in Nederland af te breken en ze verder te zetten aan het Conserva­torium in Gent.’

You can register online!

If you have never before registered at University College Ghent (HOGENT), you can register online at webreg.hogent.be.

This online procedure makes the registration process quicker.

You will then report in person to the student office at KASK & Conservatory Required documents

When you register, bring the following documents with you:

• your identity card and /or residence permit • your original secondary school (or higher) diploma • a bank account number in case of tuition refund.

If you have a degree in higher education, bring the original degree. If you have followed a course of higher education, but have not completed it, bring proof of atten­ dance and/or regis­ tration, and evidence of credits earned for each year.

If there are gaps in these studies, bring proof of employment or the equivalent.

If you hold a diploma or degree from a fo­ reign institution, you can consult the website or the student student office for more infor­m ation about the admission procedure.

No secundary school diploma?

If you do not hold a high school diploma, you can still be admit­ ted to University College Ghent, on condi­ tion that it has been at least three years since you attended secondary school.

You will first undergo an admis­ sions exam.

Fees

The precise amount of the registration fee • depends on the number of study credits you register for, and whether or not you are a scholarship student.

If you register for 60 study points (a full study year), your registration fee for the 2020-2021 academic year will be: • non-scholarship student: € 961.90 • scholarship student: € 113,20 • almost scholarship student: € 505,90 • non-EER student: € 2885,70

• In addition to your registration fee, depending on the study programme you follow, you are also required to pay atelier or studio fees. You will find more information about this on our website: www.schoolofartsgent.be.

Registreer je online!

Ben je nog nooit eerder ingeschreven aan de HOGENT? Registreer je dan online via webreg.hogent.be.

Dankzij de online registratie versnel je de inschrijvings­ procedure. Je moet je daarna nog persoon­ lijk aanmelden op het studenten­­secre­ tariaat van KASK & Conser­vatorium.

Documenten

Breng het volgende mee om je in te schrijven:

• jouw identiteitskaart of verblijfsdocument • jouw origineel diploma van het hoger secundair onderwijs • een bankrekeningnummer voor eventuele terug­betaling van het studiegeld

Als je al een diploma hoger onderwijs hebt, breng je ook dat ori­ gineel diploma mee.

Als je hoger onderwijs volgde maar de studie niet afwerkte, breng je de inschrijvingsattesten en eventuele credit­ bewijzen mee van elk jaar. Als er perioden zijn waarin je geen onderwijs volgde, breng je ook een werkgevers­of rva­-attest mee.

Als je een buitenlands diploma hebt, kan je op de website of het studentensecretariaat informeren naar de juiste toelatings­ procedure.

Geen diploma secundair?

Heb je geen diploma van het secundair onderwijs, dan kun je toch toege­ laten worden tot de HoGent, op voorwaarde dat je al drie jaar het secundair hebt verlaten.

Kostprijs

Hoeveel het inschrijv­ ings­ geld exact bedraagt, hangt af van het aantal studie­ punten dat je opneemt en het feit of je al dan niet beurs­ student bent. EN 92 ADMISSIONS EXAM Before you can register for an academic bachelor programme at KASK & Conservatory, you are required to pass the artistic admissions exam. You can register to take the exam online at webreg.hogent.be.

Participation in the exam will cost €10.

KASK & Conservatory make it a point to involve not only all of our faculty, but also external jury members in all the entrance exams. This ensures maximum objectivity in judging and guarantees that all candidates can count on optimum advice and feedback.

Vooraleer je kan in­ schrijven voor een academische bachelor­ opleiding aan KASK & Conservatorium, moet je slagen voor de artist­ieke toelatings­ proef. Inschrijven voor de toe­latingsproeven gebeurt online via webreg.hogent.be.

Bij deelname aan de artistieke toe­latings­ proeven betaal je een eenmalige inschrijvings­ som van €10. KASK & Conserva­torium maakt er een punt van om bij alle proeven niet al­ leen docenten maar ook ex­ terne juryleden te betrekken.
