TO THE ST ETHELBERT’S SUMMER FAIR

T

he PTFA and friends have been working hard to bring you a fun filled programme of events.

Making a debut appearance is the Bolton Agility team. The arena will be packed with hairy gymnasts but of the four legged kind! Hairy McClairy move over, the Bolton Agility Team are trained dogs of the highest calibre, members of which have performed at Crufts.

We have other four legged friends at the fair in the form of Nelsons Park Ponies.

Rides will be available throughout the day, and ponies will be ‘on hoof’ for patting.

We’re on target for having a good time, but to make sure Quex Park Archery will be there for you to practice your Robin Hood skills.

Crafty little and big ones can make something in the arts and craft tent and don’t forget to look out for trophies and fairy doors! Our princess and superhero parlour will host face painting and glitter tattoos and plenty of other surprises too.

Traditional fair favourites will be there, coconut shy, hoopla, lolly island and wine or water to name but a few and a variety of exciting new stalls and games too. The

Royal National Lifeboat Institution are kindly coming along, to remind us about coastal safety.

All singing all dancing St Ethelberts pupils will wow and entertain you throughout the day, and if all that running around is making you thirsty, sit down and enjoy a nice cuppa, some award winning cake, or strawberries and cream in the tea tent.

There will be lip smacking ice-cream courtesy of Morelli’s or if the smell of BBQ is making you hungry, grab a burger or hot dog at one of the food stalls.

So come along, bring your pennies, friends, parents, grandparents, Uncle Tom Cobley and all (and a picnic rug if you want to secure a place next to our new arena) and enjoy a great day out and all the fun of the fair.

Watch out for a prehistoric special guest.

YOUR PTFA The Parents Teachers and Friends Association work hard all year to support pupils at the school. We provide a wide range of activities and events aimed at enriching children’s’ experiences during their primary school years. Events vary from cake sales to discos, uniform sales to the summer fair. Every penny raised is spent on the children.

So far, classes have been wowed by Horrible Histories at the Marlow, experienced life in the stone age, petted animals with the mobile farm, and year 6 are looking forward to bouncing along at Gravity trampolining. The library has new books thanks to a holiday reading challenge, but our most unusual purchase is a stick insect named Zippy! We couldn’t have done this without the amazing teachers, parents, grandparents and friends who volunteer. If you are able to help at future events (especially this year’s summer fair!) please contact the office.

Heads Up! An interview with Head Teacher Mr John Letts

What are your responsibilities as Head?

To ensure things run smoothly.

One day you could be covering a dinner lady shift and another, chair regional schools meetings, making decisions on salaries worth thousands of pounds. The job is varied and you become good at juggling everyone’s needs.

How many times do you count to 10 and need a padded room?

Not as often as you think, about every two weeks.

Most enjoyable part of the job?

Working with the children. I didn’t want to be one of those Headmasters in their ivory tower. I want to be

approachable. I need to know about bad behaviour in class, but equally congratulate hard working children. I can type messages on my computer in front of the children and say your parents will receive this good news as a text. It’s great seeing their faces.

Favourite subject?

Maths. I was bought up in The Globe pub in Folkestone and served behind the bar at a young age (you could back then) and when large groups came for beer, you became pretty good at adding up.

What subjects don’t you like?

Music as I have no musical ability at all! Year 6 choir were practicing and I was taking the rest of the class. They had been learning about World War II, so I decided to teach wartime songs. We had great fun sitting under tables reenacting the Blitz, singing out of tune at full pelt.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

The most embarrassing one can’t be printed, but during Quex Park’s African day attended by the BBC and many schools, I was forced into the spotlight, which was awkward.

The BBC producer came up to me saying ‘I’ve heard St Ethelbert’s have a fantastic choir, could you sing live on air in 30 minutes’. After the initial cold sweat, I switched to professional mode. I told the Year 5 and 6 pupils what was happening and kept them calm and before going on air, arranged the strongest singers at the front and got a choir girl to wave her arms around to pretend to conduct. The less able singers including myself stood back, mouthing the words. I think I just about got away with it, albeit being laughed at by the few TA’s and parents who knew I’d winged it.

If you weren’t a teacher, what profession would you choose?

An astronaut. I was a child of the 60’s at a time they were sending men to the moon, it was exciting.

It’s great that a British man is in space. Schools can have pre-recorded tutorials beamed to their interactive white boards from Space on questions such as ‘what happens if you spill your drink?’

It’s something I’d like St Ethelbert’s to take part in.

Do you have any pets?

I’ve got a well-behaved golden retriever called Buddy. With additional pet insurance Buddy can come into school and has even helped a girl with her reading. The girl asked if she went up a reading level, could she take Buddy for a walk round the field, so I agreed. That girl went up three levels!

What was the naughtiest thing you did at primary school?

I was an Art monitor with my friend Tim, and at the end of the lesson had to clean the equipment in the big Butler

sink in the school hall. We decided that a better use for the clay shallow bowls we were cleaning was to throw and catch them.

We may have invented the Frisbee, which wasn’t about then! We had great fun, although we didn’t always catch them all. A while later the Headmaster announced that the drains were mysteriously blocked with small bits of pottery! Tim and I denied all knowledge. I also skived out of a lesson one time during a particular boring poetry class. I thought I’d rather get into trouble than sit there!

Your funniest moment at school?

I was sitting quietly, when all of the other pupils starting laughing. I looked down to find Clyde, my black Lurcher sitting at my feet! He must have

followed my scent all the way to my desk!

Your favourite playtime games?

Dodge ball with a tennis ball. There were two throwers and the rest ran along a long wall. If the throwers were good, they would hit your head, which would knock against the wall, so you would bash your head twice.

What were assembles like?

We sang lots of hymns, and then there were notices, then telling offs.

I had my name called out once. Mr Jameson (Jam Pot) caught me up a conker tree, but I thought I’d gotten away with it, as Jam Pot didn’t say anything at the time. It wasn’t even a school day, but we could be caught anytime.

Did you like school dinners?

They didn’t exist in my day. We used to go home for dinner like the factory workers.

Finally, are you willing to go in the stocks at the school fair?

It’s all part the job!

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea and two of its 230+ lifeboat stations are based in Thanet. Its volunteer crews are on call 24 hours a day to provide a lifeboat search and rescue service to 100 nautical miles from the coasts of the UK and Republic of Ireland. It also provides a seasonal lifeguard service on beaches in many parts of England and Wales. The RNLI is independent from government and relies on voluntary contributions and legacies to train and equip its volunteer crews.

With more people using the sea and beaches for pleasure than ever before,

the demands placed on RNLI crews and lifeguards have never been greater. The RNLI firmly believes that by providing a first class sea and beach safety education service many more lives can be saved and accidents prevented. Trained volunteers are available to advise boat owners and to visit schools.

There are four different entry categories -infants, lower juniors, upper juniors and ‘other’ – this could be parents, grand parents, siblings or members of the public. Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes • Makes 12 • Prep time: 45 minutes • Cooking time: 25 minutes • Total time: 1 hr 10 min Ingredients • 12 wafer cup cornets • 125g unsalted butter, softened • 125g caster sugar • 1 vanilla pod, cut in half and seeds reserved • 2 eggs • 125g self-raising flour • 3 tbsp milk To decorate • 1 quantity buttercream • Multi-coloured sugar strands • 4 flake bars, each cut into 3 lengths

Equipment • Disposable piping bag • Large star nozzle Method 1.

Preheat the oven to 190 /

Gas mark 5 2.

Stand the cornets in a 12-hole

muffin tin – one in each muffin hole.

3.

Whisk the butter, sugar and vanilla

seeds together using an electric

hand whisk or beat with a wooden

spoon until pale and creamy.

Gradually whisk in the eggs. Add the

flour and milk and whisk again until

combined and fluffy.

4.

Divide between the cornets and

bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes

– until golden and risen. Leave to

cool in the tin for 5 mins, then

transfer to a wire rack to go cold.

5.

Put the buttercream into a piping

bag with a large star nozzle. Pipe a

swirl onto the top of each cornet.

6.

Scatter over the sugar strands and

finish each with a piece of flake.
